1 13660 N 94 th Dr, Ste C-4 Peoria, AZ (623) hcg Program Information Welcome! You have chosen to use hcg (human chorionic gonadotropin) to assist in losing unwanted, abnormal fat reserves and to help reset your body s ability to store fat. Dr. Simeons, M.D. was the pioneering physician of the use of hcg for weight loss. Dr. Simeons used hcg to treat his patients in Italy in the 1950 s. He treated thousands of patients and during this time, developed, and refined his weight loss protocol. You have, or will be sent via , Dr. Simeons book Pound and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity. Although we are providing you with the general guidelines, it is important that you read Dr. Simeons book as many times as necessary to understand his protocol and the reasoning behind it. You will be provided with handouts to keep track of your progress. Please bring all progress sheets and food logs with you to each clinic visit. It is recommended that you keep all information in a 3-ring binder for convenience. Brief Overview *NOTE: You will notice 2 different sets of time periods. These correspond to the short program (#23 injections) and long program (#40 injections). Load Days 1 and 2 (same for both programs): Inject hcg as directed, in the morning, at the same time each day. Eat as much as you desire, but concentrate on foods high in fat. These are your food loading days. It is important to food load or gorge as Dr. Simeons stated, because this will make sure you have appropriate normal fat reserves to be comfortable during the 3 week diet. Also, it takes at least 2 injections for the body to have enough hcg to start releasing stored fat. Do not start the very low calorie diet (VLCD) during the first 2 days! You do not need to record your food intake during these first 2 days. Injections & VLCD (Days 3-23 for short program) or (Days 3 46 for long program): Continue to inject hcg daily, as directed. Follow the VLCD exactly as described in your information handouts. Do not stray from the prescribed diet, as it must be followed closely in order for the hcg protocol to work well. For those doing the long program, you will be injecting the hcg for only 6 days per week, but will continue on the VLCD during your day off. Which day you take off will be discussed with you on an individual basis. Days (for short program) or Days (for long program): Stop all hcg injections, but continue the VLCD. The VLCD is to be followed for 72 hours after your last hcg injection. If you do your hcg injections later in the day, your VLCD will last into the 26 th or 49 th day. Days (for short program) or Days (for long program): Start your Stabilizing phase. This 3-week phase consists of a healthy diet that excludes sugar and starches. 2 How to do hcg injections: 1. If you have the time, take 1 hcg syringe out of the refrigerator and let it warm up to room temperature (less than 5 minutes). You may find that injections at room temperature are more comfortable, but this is not necessary. 2. Open an alcohol pad packet and wipe the area you will be injecting. Be sure to rotate injection sites on a daily basis. Allow the alcohol to dry on the skin. 3. Carefully uncap the needle by pulling the cap straight out from the end of the syringe. Hold the syringe at a 90º angle to the injection site. Quickly push needle into the skin. Once needle is in the skin, inject the hcg by pushing gently down on the plunger. Remove needle and wipe injection site with a cotton ball should there a drop of blood at the injection site. Usually, there is no bleeding. 4. Recap the needle by scooping the cap with the needle. Do not grab the cap end and push directly onto the needle, as you may accidently puncture yourself. Dispose of the syringe in a designated hard plastic container. You may return the syringes to the clinic for disposal each week or dispose of them yourself. If bringing them into the clinic, make sure to keep them in a hard plastic container. See your discharge instructions for proper disposal. Do NOT throw the syringes directly into the trash. Skin Products You may use mineral oil (baby oil) or coconut oil, if desired. After your shower, while you are still wet, apply mineral oil to your skin, then dry off with a towel. You may use coconut oil on your face and neck if the skin is dry. It is best to only use mineral oil on the rest of your body. Any make-up must not contain fats, as these can be absorbed by the body and slow down or stall your weight loss. There are some non-oil body products on the market, but you must read all ingredient labels carefully. Allowed products include: eye liner pencil, mascara, lipstick, and mineral make-up. General Guidelines The hcg weight loss protocol must be done under the supervision of a licensed health care practitioner. This will assure that you are able to use hcg, are using it properly, and are receiving ongoing professional supervision. The diet you will be following contains 500 Calories per day. Dr. Simeons stated that the very low calorie diet (VLCD) was essential to successful weight loss with hcg. He wrote in his findings that hcg directs the release of abnormal fat reserves which account for an additional 2,000 Calories of energy to be utilized during the day. You may see similar weight loss with a VLCD without hcg, but much of the loss would be from muscle wasting and without hcg, the metabolism would be severely affected. *Women only. No hcg injections are to be given during your menstrual cycle. The best time to start treatment is immediately after your menses has ended. Treatment can be started on a different day of your cycle, but it is advisable to have at least 10 days of injections before the start of your next menses. We have had some women choose to do injections during their menses. Be sure to discuss this with our physician should you have any questions. 3 *Remember to keep the hcg syringes refrigerated. If you will be traveling, you must carry the syringes with an ice pack. If you will be flying, then you will also need a written and signed note on a script pad from our physician stating that you are on this medication. Be sure to get this while in the clinic we can not it to you. The best way to carry the syringes is in a hard plastic container. Each of the airlines may have different regulations, so please check with your particular airline before you plan to travel. Dietary Guidelines Days 1 and 2: For the first 2 days of hcg injections, it is important to NOT yet start the VLCD. It takes about 3 injections for the body to increase the movement of fat from the abnormal fat reserves. Eating guidelines for first 2 days of hcg injections and up to 5 days prior to the start of injections: eat to capacity of foods that are highly concentrated, such as cream, cheese, nuts, chocolate, eggs, bacon, mayonnaise, and meat. While you want to consume foods that are rich in fats, you can still do this in a healthy way. Try to choose whole foods that are made without additives and artificial ingredients. Dr. Simeons recommended eating to capacity for up to 5 days prior to starting the first hcg injection for those individuals who had over-dieted and deprived themselves repeatedly in the past. These individuals were thought to be low in Normal fat reserves and would have better success and experience less hunger during the protocol by over-consuming food before and during the first 2 days of injections. *We find that most individuals do well by overeating only during the first 2 days of hcg injections. Should you have any questions about this, please ask. Days 3-25 (short program) or Days 3-46 (long program): Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) This diet is very specific (500 Calories per day). You can also find this diet in Dr. Simeons book, Pounds and Inches: A New Approach to Obesity. Breakfast and through out the morning: Lunch: Dinner: 1. You may consume as much of the following fluids as desired: water, organic black coffee (regular or decaf), organic green tea, herbal teas, and Yerba Mate tea. Only 1 tablespoon of milk is allowed in a 24 hour period. 1. Eat 100 grams (3½ ounces) of one of the following: organic chicken breast (without skin), organic beef or veal (grass fed is preferred), wild game (deer or elk), white fish (Chilean sea bass - wild caught only, sole, halibut, or flounder), lobster, crab, or shrimp type of vegetable only to be chosen from the following: spinach, chard, chicory, beet greens, green salad, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, or cabbage breadstick (Grissini) or 1 Melba toast. 4. Pick one of the following: 1 apple, 1 orange, a handful of strawberries (about 5), or ½ grapefruit. Sun Valley Weight Management Clinic, LLC; rev 1/05/09 Page 3 of 6

4 1. Same 4 choices as lunch. Do not eat the same meal at dinner as you do for lunch on the same day. Guidelines for VLCD Weigh yourself daily, preferably at the same time each morning, without clothes, and after emptying your bladder. Record your weight on the sheet provided and bring it to the clinic for each visit. Drink at least ½ gallon (64 ounces) of water each day. Drinking more fluids is advisable and will help you feel better during the day. Natural spring water is preferred because it still contains minerals. Tap water has additives and impurities and filtered water does not contain adequate minerals. The meat you eat should be weighed raw, before cooking. It is recommended that you weigh it on a digital food scale. All visible fat must be carefully removed before cooking. Meat can be boiled or grilled, without the addition of fat. Your vegetables can be eaten raw, steamed, or sautéed (in water only no oil). All fruits, vegetables, meat, herbs, and fluids should be organic if at all possible. Seasonings - feel free to season your food with any of the following: black or white pepper, raw apple cider vinegar (organic), soy sauce, basil, parsley, garlic, sea salt (no table salt), thyme, marjoram, or other spices. Be sure to read food labels you do not want to consume anything with added fat or sugar. The juice of 1 lemon daily is allowed, in total, during the course of each day. Only the 4 items listed for lunch and dinner may be eaten at one meal. Do not save something from a meal and eat it with the next meal of the day. There is no objection to breaking up the two meals. For instance, having a breadstick and apple for breakfast or before going to bed, provided they are deducted from the regular meals. The whole daily ration of two breadsticks or two fruits may not be eaten at the same time. In the beginning, check every meal against the diet guidelines before starting to eat. Do not rely on your memory for the first several days. If it helps, copy the diet portion of this handout and hang it on your refrigerator. This will also help others in your household to see what you are eating. It should be mentioned that two small apples, weighing as much as one large one never the less, have a higher caloric value and are therefore not allowed. There is no restriction on the size of one apple. Chicken breast does not mean the breast of any other fowl, nor does it mean a wing or drumstick. Do not skip meals! Follow these guidelines closely and be sure to eat each item with each meal. For the 72 hours following your last hcg injection, continue to follow the VLCD. This is done because, even though you have stopped the injections, your body will still be under the influence of hcg during this time. Sun Valley Weight Management Clinic, LLC; rev 1/05/09 Page 4 of 6

5 Do not add any of the following to your foods while on this phase of the program: any oils, such as cooking oil, butter, or dressings. If you find yourself on a plateau, so that you have not lost any weight for at least 4 days in a row, you may follow what Dr. Simeons referred to as an Apple Day. You will need 6 large apples for this day. An Apple Day begins at lunch and continues until just before lunch the following day. You may eat an apple whenever you desire, but 6 apples is the maximum in this 24 hour period. During an Apple Day, no other foods or liquids are allowed, except for plain water. Water should only be consumed to quench an uncomfortable thirst should you still be thirsty after eating an apple. An Apple Day should never be done on the same day that an hcg injection is skipped. Monitor your food intake with the food log provided and make sure you are not consuming more than 500 Calories each day. Should you need help with calorie counting, use one of the recommended websites listed in your handouts. Mild exercise is allowed during this phase. If you do not currently exercise regularly, only do mild exercise, such as walking, easy biking riding, and yoga. It is recommended that you exercise for about 15 minutes per day. If you exercise regularly, you may continue as long as it is not too strenuous. Please discuss this with your physician on an individual basis. Days (short program) or Days (long program): Stabilizing Phase NOTE: You will be given a separate handout for this phase once you get close to end of your hcg injection phase. This phase is VERY important. Please follow the guidelines closely. You must follow this phase for 21 days following the completion of the VLCD. If you still need to lose weight at the end of this time period, you may restart with hcg program 3 weeks after your last hcg injection. There are no calorie restrictions during this phase, but use common sense stop eating when you have eaten a proper amount of food. It is important that you increase your calories from when you were taking hcg. Absolutely DO NOT stay on the VLCD. The following foods are not allowed during this phase. Be sure to read labels for all of the foods you eat. Sugar of any kind sugar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, honey, glucose, fructose, dextrose, etc. Starches of any kind potatoes (white, sweet, or yams), rice (any type), anything containing flour (bread, pasta, tortillas, muffins, cookies, pastries, cereal, etc.). No artificial ingredients of any kind, such as preservatives, flavors, colors, or sweeteners. *You may continue to use Stevia (which is all natural) as a sweetener. No damaged fats. These include: hydrogenated oils (partially hydrogenated oil and trans fats) and deep fried foods. Continue to weigh yourself daily and to record your weight on the log you have been provided. You should stay within a range of 2 pounds of the weight you were at on the last day of hcg injections. Sun Valley Weight Management Clinic, LLC; rev 1/05/09 Page 5 of 6

6 After the Stabilizing Phase has been completed As mentioned above, should you need to do another round of hcg, you will need to take at least another 3 weeks off before restarting the injections. Dr. Simeons believed that, by following the program, you have reset your hypothalamus and have ridden yourself of unnecessary abnormal fat reserves. You should not experience the intense hunger you may have felt before doing the program. If you were leading an unhealthy lifestyle with junk food, fast food, no vegetables, excessive stress, and no exercise, DO NOT go back and start living your life in this manner. We are not meant to lead an unhealthy lifestyle and our bodies pay the price. Continue to follow a healthy diet with fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, and raw nuts. Limit processed foods as much as possible. Website Recommendations for Calorie Counting Sun Valley Weight Management Clinic, LLC; rev 1/05/09 Page 6 of 6
