Every year an estimated one million Europeans suffer from VTE and one third of those die 2. In the U.S., up to $39.9 billion is spent treating preventable hospital acquired VTE every year 3. Whilst 50 percent of all hospital inpatients may be at risk of VTE, only half receive adequate protection despite the wide availability of effective preventative measures 1. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is highly preventable. The consistent use of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) has been clinically proven as a safe and effective method of reducing venous stasis in hospitalised patients with reduced mobility. IPC has been shown to be clinically effective in a wide range of surgical and medical specialities 4. Its inflation-deflation cycle enhances what the body does naturally mimicking the ambulatory calf and foot pumps to move the blood in the deep veins of the leg and thereby reducing the risk of VTE.
