THE PELOSI MEDICAL CENTER HCG DIET MANUAL

2 Congratulations on starting the most effective weight loss program available. The HCG Diet is a three- week diet that combines a daily dose of HCG with a very low calorie diet for extremely rapid weight loss. After the HCG Diet you will go on a higher calorie Maintenance Diet for an additional three weeks to help you keep the weight off and transition to a long- term weight management solution. This manual contains all of the information you need to prepare for and follow the diet.

4 PREPARING FOR THE DIET You will need to gather several items before you get started: A digital bathroom scale A kitchen food scale A food measuring cup You will also need to take specific vitamins every day for three weeks. These are available over the counter in most supermarkets and pharmacies without a prescription: Vitamin D Unit tablet once daily: need 26 tablets total Potassium 99mg tablet three times daily: need 78 tablets total Aspirin 325mg tablet: once daily first seven days only. Do not take if you are allergic or have stomach ulcers. These are the only vitamins and supplements that you should be taking during the 3- week HCG Diet. Other vitamins, supplements, and oils which are normally considered healthy and good for you are NOT good for getting the maximum weight loss benefit from this diet. You may resume them when the diet is over. You should avoid fats that touch your skin. These can be absorbed into your skin and interfere with HCG weight loss. These include oils, lotions, lip balm, and soap beauty bars. Also avoid tanning and massages during the three- week diet.

HANDLING YOUR HCG 5 You will be provided with a cold container packed with 23 prefilled HCG syringes with injection needles attached and capped. The syringes must remain refrigerated. Place the container in your refrigerator as soon as you get home. If you have children at home, make sure that the container is out of reach. Take only one syringe out of the container every day. Wash your hands. To inject, simply pinch a roll of belly fat with your non- dominant hand, wipe the skin with alcohol, uncap the needle and inject straight into the fat. It s painless and bloodless. Apply a little pressure over the spot with your thumb for 10 seconds and you re done. You will also be provided with a container for disposing of your used syringes and needles. Do NOT dispose of syringes in your regular trash.

6 YOUR HCG EATING PLAN: THE DIET Your diet starts with a 2- day high- calories/high- fat loading phase (Phase 1) followed by a 24- day very low calories no- fat phase (Phase 2). On the last 3 days of the diet you will not take HCG injections. For women, the best time to start the HCG Diet is at the end of your menstrual cycle. Phase 1: Days 1 and 2 Weigh yourself after getting up and using the bathroom. Inject yourself with 1 syringe of HCG. Place the empty syringe in the disposal container. Take one tablet of vitamin D. Take one table of potassium morning, noon, and night. Take one aspirin unless allergic. Consume 3000 to 4000 calories of high fat food. The number of meals is up to you. Drink at least 64 ounces of water total throughout the day. Avoid Common Mistakes in Phase 1 Do not try to eat low calories or low fat foods in the first two days. Do not focus on eating carbs. Carbs are OK here, but you should focus on eating fats as much as possible. The purpose of Phase 1 is to boost your metabolism above normal levels. You must eat all out! It is critical to your success that you follow the diet exactly as written. No substitutions or additions are permitted. Days 3 through 26 are the very low calories no- fat phase of the HCG Diet. The calories that your body burns during this phase are mostly from your stored body fat. On the last 3 days of the diet you will not take HCG injections. You must avoid exercise and strenuous physical activities during this phase. Phase 2: Days 3 through 26 Weigh yourself after getting up and using the bathroom. Inject yourself with 1 syringe of HCG (Days 3 through 23 only). Place the empty syringe in the disposal container. Take one tablet of vitamin D. Take one table of potassium morning, noon, and night. Take one aspirin tablet daily through Day 7 unless you are allergic. Drink at least 64 ounces of water total throughout the day. You may also drink unlimited amounts of black coffee, black tea, green tea, or mineral water. You may use Sweet n Low or

Stevia as a sweetener, but not cream or milk. You may use one tablespoon of skim milk in 24 hours. You may use the juice of one lemon in 24 hours. 7 Consume one HCG Snack Meal in the morning. Consume one HCG Snack Meal in the evening. Consume one HCG Lunch. Consume one HCG Dinner. The HCG Snack Meals, Lunch and Dinner are described in the next section. Avoid Common Mistakes in Phase 2 Do not substitute unlisted foods or condiments into your meals. Do not fail to drink enough water. This is critical on a very low calorie diet. Do not exercise. You are not eating enough to support the extra demands of exercise. Do not eat two meals or snacks together at the same time. YOUR HCG EATING PLAN: LUNCH AND DINNER MEALS The HCG Lunch Meal and the HCG Dinner Meal are the same. Each consists of a 100- gram portion of meat and one serving of one type of vegetable. You must eat these together. You may not combine half portions of different types of vegetables or meats in the same meal. Phase 2: HCG Lunch or HCG Dinner Choose one 100- gram portion of meat (3.5 ounces). It must be weighed before cooking and with any skin, bones and fat removed: Veal, Lean Beef (96% lean only), Chicken Breast, Turkey, or Buffalo, Fresh white fish: halibut, cod, haddock, tilapia, or flounder Lobster, Crab, or Shrimp Choose one portion of vegetables: Raw Spinach (3 cups), Chard (3 cups), Chicory (3/4 cup), Beet- Greens (3 cups), Green Salad (3 cups), Tomato (1 medium), Celery (1.5 cups), Fennel (1 cup), Onions (1/2 cup), Red Radishes (1 cup sliced), Cucumber (1 small), Asparagus (6 medium spears), or Cabbage (1 cup).

8 How to Prepare Your Meals Meats and vegetables may be grilled or boiled, but no oil, fat or butter may be used. Seasonings may include salt, pepper, vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweet basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, etc., but no oil, butter or dressing. It s a good idea to prepare your meals in advance for the entire week, place your portions in Ziploc bags, and heat them up later. Phase 2: HCG Snack Meal The HCG Snack Meal is eaten twice per day. It consists of one specific bread and one fruit. The snack meal can be eaten along with Lunch or Dinner or separately. You cannot two snack meals together at the same time. Choose one portion of the following breads: 1 Grissini breadstick (pencil sized) 1 Melba toast 2 Melba snacks (garlic, whole grain, or sea salt) Choose one portion of the following fruits: 1 medium apple 1 handful of strawberries One- half grapefruit 1 medium orange

TIPS FOR YOUR SUCCESS 9 It s difficult to succeed without a well- organized plan. Commit yourself to follow these simple tips and you ll be thrilled with your results three weeks from now. Create an inventory of foods that conform to the HCG Diet. Calculate the quantities of food that will be required to get you through the entire diet. Create a grocery list and purchase the appropriate meats, vegetables, spices and sweeteners. Prepare the meals in advance, one week at time. Not being prepared makes the diet much more difficult. Cook the meats thoroughly and refrigerate or freeze. Use an outdoor grill or a George Foreman grill or use your oven to bake meats. You can also sauté some meats in water. The best reason to precook your food is to avoid getting stuck in a rush and not having anything on hand that fits the diet. Remember, you only need to do this for three weeks. Know your goal and your starting point. Make a chart or spreadsheet and keep track of the pounds and inches you lose. Monitor daily. Weigh yourself in the mornings after using the bathroom. Check yourself in your outfits and in the mirror. Choose a day to start when you are not overly busy with other things. Stay committed.

10 AFTER THE HCG DIET: THE MAINTENANCE DIET ( PHASE 3 ) Congratulations on achieving a huge weight loss in such a short period of time. This is the beginning of a new chapter in your life. Losing the weight was a giant step. Keeping it off takes a little bit of effort, but the Maintenance Diet will set you in the right direction. The Maintenance Diet is not a strict, regimented diet, but rather an eating plan that follows a few simple guidelines. For the next three weeks, you will be eating more calories and following a low carbohydrate diet balanced to your needs. After the Maintenance Diet, you may choose to stay on it for the long- term, some people prefer to increase the carbohydrates, and others may wish to repeat another cycle of the HCG Diet. The Maintenance Diet starts with a caloric assessment. A caloric assessment is simply an estimate of how many calories your body burns in a day. It includes all the calories your body uses in 24 hours while you are asleep and while you are awake including exercise. It is sometimes called a metabolic assessment or a total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Once we figure out how many calories your body burns in a day, we can use this information to easily establish a daily calorie target for your Maintenance Diet. You decide your daily calorie target based on your goals. If you want to lose weight, your calorie target will be slightly less than what your body burns in a day. If you want to maintain your weight, your calorie target will equal what your body burns in 24 hours. We will provide you with the exact numbers and teach you how to calculate them yourself. You can change your goals and targets whenever you wish. For 3 weeks you will weigh yourself daily and count calories. When you start the Maintenance Diet you will weigh yourself every morning upon rising from bed. This will keep you on track and in the long term, it's a great way to keep yourself from falling into bad habits. On the Maintenance Diet, you need to count calories every day. Otherwise, you have no way of knowing if you are meeting or exceeding your daily calorie target and you might put weight back on. The best and easiest way to count calories is to use an online calculator or phone app like MyFitnessPal. You simply measure how much you ate of each food by weighing it, and the app figures out the calories for you and adds everything up for the whole day. Almost every type

and brand of food is in their database. To start using this calculator, go to myfitnesspal.com and open a free account. If you are not computer savvy or don't have access to online resources, use the nutritional information provided on food labels to count calories and write everything down in a notebook. 11 The Maintenance Diet Details The Maintenance Diet is a low- carbohydrate, high- protein diet with a daily calorie target. Fats and oils are allowed. Fruits and specific breads are allowed in limited amounts. Sugar and high- sugar foods are not allowed. Drinks You must continue to drink at least 64 ounces of water every day. That s eight 8- ounce glasses. You may also drink mineral water, sparkling water, black or green tea or black coffee in any quantity at any time. Sugar is not allowed. Creamer and milk are allowed, but the calories must be counted. Saccharin (brand name Sweet n Low) or stevia (pure without additives) may be used. You may not drink fruit juice or soda. Vitamins You should take a multivitamin supplement once daily. If you wish to take fish oil supplements, you may do so. Other vitamins and supplements are unnecessary, but you may resume whatever you were taking before the HCG Diet. You no longer need to take potassium supplements. Meals On the HCG Diet your meals were organized into lunch, dinner, and 2 bread/fruit snacks. On the Maintenance Diet, the number of meals is up to you, but the total calories for the day should hit your calorie target and not exceed it. For example, if your calorie target for the day is 1200 calories, you could eat two 600- calorie meals, three 400- calorie meals, or any combination that adds up to 1200 calories for the day. Meal Composition You can continue to follow the basic structure of the HCG Diet meals (meat + vegetable + bread + fruit), but with more calories and more options. You may eat all types of fish. You may eat fried foods. You may eat nuts. Fats and butters are acceptable. However, you have to count the calories. For example, if you have a fried egg for breakfast, you must not only count the calories in the egg, but also the calories in the oil or butter that you used to fry it. Foods that are Not Allowed on the Maintenance Diet Any food that is considered a processed carbohydrate is not allowed on the Maintenance Diet. This includes all types of rice, cereals, breads (except for those listed below), pastries, pasta, pizza, wheat and wheat products, donuts, bagels, cookies, candy, desserts, ketchup, potato

12 chips, nachos, and anything else that's crunchy and comes in a bag. Corn is not allowed. Also, beans of any kind, honey, syrup, canned fruits and sugar are not allowed. If you have a cheeseburger or a hot dog, the bun is not allowed. Foods that are Allowed on the Maintenance Diet All meats except any meats prepared with a sugary coating like honey- glazed ham, brown sugar, molasses barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce, etc. All vegetables except corn and anything prepared with any sugary sweetening agents. All fresh and frozen fruits are allowed. Canned fruits are not allowed. Nuts, butters and oils are allowed. The breads that are allowed are the same Grissini bread sticks and Melba toast options from HCG Diet. You may not eat more than two bread sticks or 2 Melba toasts per day. Emergency Steak Day Your weight at the end of the HCG Diet is your baseline weight for the Maintenance Diet. If you find that you weigh more than 2.1 pounds over your baseline weight at any time during the Maintenance Diet, an Emergency Steak Day should help bring the weight back down. An Emergency Steak Day is a day when you eat nothing for breakfast or lunch, but drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Then, in the evening have 1 large steak (8-18 oz) followed by an apple OR a raw tomato. The next morning when you weigh in, you should be back within 2 lbs of your baseline weight. Summary It's that simple! Pick meats and vegetables and cook them the way you like, add small portions of fruit, a bread stick or two per day, and drink plenty of water. Track your calories and weigh yourself daily. After the Maintenance Diet After the Maintenance Diet, you have two options: Option 1: Repeat the HCG Diet if you want to lose more weight quickly. Option 2: Slowly start to add healthy sugars and starches back into your diet and keep your total daily calorie intake aligned with your long term goals. This is when you move on with your new, healthy post- HCG Diet lifestyle in your smaller clothes. Now, you should be craving healthier foods and a diet full of healthy fats, lean proteins, and fresh veggies. To control weight for the rest of your life, just weigh yourself daily. If you are up more than 2.1 lbs over your last HCG date weight, you guessed it: do an Emergency Steak Day.

Frequently Asked Questions 15 What is HCG and how does it work? HCG is a natural hormone produced in the body. It has many functions and is used medically to treat a variety of conditions. It is the pregnancy hormone. This hormone allows the body to metabolize fat and use it as energy for both mother and fetus. This acts as a "fail- safe" mechanism when energy is needed immediately. For weight loss, we use only a very small amount of HCG to capitalize on this same mechanism. Is HCG Safe? HCG is extremely safe. Women normally experience very high levels of HCG during pregnancy with no adverse affects. This diet is not suitable for anyone with diabetes, gallstones (past or present) or gallbladder disease, heart disease, gout, pregnant or breastfeeding, or with a history of blood clots, or a history of cancer. This diet is not recommended without a preliminary medical evaluation. HCG has not been approved by the FDA for weight loss, although it has been approved for the treatment of other medical conditions. Federal laws allow medical providers to use approved drugs for alternative treatments. It is called "Off Label Usage" and occurs quite frequently in the medical profession. Is HCG safe for men? The HCG hormone is naturally present in men. It is found in every human tissue, including males, pregnant women, and non- pregnant women. Men get even faster results and tend to lose more weight than women. If HCG works so well for weight loss, why don't pregnant women lose weight? HCG works to mobilize fat for utilization by the body only when there is a significant decrease in calories and fat. For weight loss, a very low calorie diet of all the right foods is used to trigger HCG to help rid the body of fat. Will my metabolism slow down if I am on a very low calorie diet? It is true that normally when cutting back on calories and fat, our body stores fat and our metabolism slows down. This happens because fat is really a life- saving source of stored energy. When a very low calorie diet is used in conjunction with the HCG, the hormone signals the body to used stored fat for energy, and will eliminate excess fat reserves. It is a natural process, so no ill effects on your metabolism will result. The HCG keeps the body from going into starvation mode and holding onto fat as it resets your metabolism. Wouldn't I lose the same amount of weight eating a very low calorie diet without HCG? You can lose weight simply by eating fewer calories and fat, but because the body stores fat during times of deprivation, you will most likely lose muscle before fat. This causes cellular metabolism to slow down, so in the long run, it would make gaining weight easier, as well as decrease bone density and muscle mass. By using HCG with the low calorie diet, extra fat is

16 mobilized for energy and the rest is eliminated; the low calorie diet is vital in preventing immediate refilling of emptied fat cells. You benefit by preferentially getting rid of excess fat without affecting your bone and muscle. With HCG you can lose the weight quickly and keep it off! The HCG diet is very low calorie, will I get hungry? It is common to feel mild hunger during the first few days. This will pass and by the second week you will find your servings to be satisfying. Because HCG mobilizes fat and makes it available to the body as an energy source, it naturally reduces appetite. So even though you are taking in fewer calories, your body can access the energy you have stored in fat cells. Drinking lots of the green tea all day (alone or sweetened with natural stevia) helps a ton as a natural appetite suppressant and your energy level. Overall, most people have plenty of energy and feel good while on the program. Will HCG interfere with any medications I am currently taking? What about birth control pills or Depo- Provera injections? HCG formulas do not interact with ANY medications, including birth control pills or Depo- Provera. Will I experience any changes in my menstrual cycle taking HCG? Because the amount of HCG is so small, there are no changes to your menstrual cycle. Likewise, HCG will not affect your ability to become pregnant, nor will it increase your chances of getting pregnant. It is best to start the HCG diet at the end of a menstrual period because you are less likely to get hungry during the first week of the diet. Once on HCG and you have a menstrual cycle, you can maintain the diet and continue taking HCG. What about pregnancy and taking HCG? If you are pregnant do not take HCG. If you become pregnant during the HCG diet, stop taking HCG and consult your OB- GYN. How much weight can I expect to lose on the program? Most people will lose 15 pounds or more in just 3 weeks and between pounds if they do an extended cycle or a second round. Everyone is different. It depends on many factors including how much excess weight you have and how much weight needs to be lost. Does the weight loss slow down after the first two weeks? Many times there is a large amount of weight loss in the first week, then a plateau or leveling off of weight loss. This does not mean that your weight loss has stopped. Typically, inches are being lost continuously while on the program, and after a period of time, patients will experience another large drop on the scale. Weight loss is thus achieved in this stair- step fashion. Is it ok to skip a meal or protein at one of my meals? NO!!!!!!! Never skip any of your meals. It's important to eat all of your 500 calories and especially your protein so that you lose fat and not muscle.

Can I exercise daily? No exercise! Or if you must exercise, low key exercise only. You can do about 20 min. of walking a day if you feel that must do something. Exercise burns more calories than the diet provides and therefore causes your hunger to increase. The combination of low calorie intake and exercise could cause your body to go into starvation mode. This can negatively impact your stamina and commitment to the diet. So take it easy. And remember, you will be losing fat. So when you do go back to the gym, it's a skinner, more energetic you! Do I have to take vitamins while doing this diet? We recommend taking a vitamin D supplement containing 1000 units of vitamin D- 3 once daily on all days of the diet, and a potassium supplement containing 99 mg of potassium 3 times a day during the HCG diet program. Is it normal to get a headache during the first week? Some people may experience light headaches during the first week, this is because your body is releasing fat cells very rapidly and you will be going through a major detoxification. We recommend that you take one 325mg aspirin tablet daily in the first week to prevent this from happening. Can I take the HCG longer than 23 days if I want to keep losing weight? Yes! The 23- day injection schedule is the original and most popular version of the HCG Diet, but it can be extended in special circumstances for up to 40 days. The longer regimens require more intense medical surveillance. We recommend that you do 2 rounds of the diet rather than one extended round for better results and less health concerns. Can I drink alcohol on the HCG Diet? No. The only fluids permitted during the HCG diet are water, mineral water, black tea, green tea, and black coffee. Can I wear makeup? The answer is yes. However try to avoid lotions, moisturizers or liquid make- ups with oil. HCG is very sensitive to oils, creams and fats. These could slow the weight loss process down; you only want it to target your stored fat. You can use any mineral makeup or pressed powders and of course oil free foundations are fine. Other types of eye makeup and lipstick are fine. Stay away from lip glosses and Chapstick. If your lips get dry the protocol says to use Carmex. It also says if needed you can use mineral oil (baby oil) if needed as a moisturizer. What do I do if my weight loss plateaus? If the weight loss slows try the following: Increase water consumption (try to drink 1/2-1 gallon a day) and or green tea consumption. Eliminate the fruits from two to one per day. If mixing vegetables, stop. Check all condiments for sugar content. If having constipation problems, try a laxative tea. This is usually very effective. It is not uncommon on this diet to have a bowel movement once every 3-4 days, if provided you are consuming plenty of fluids. This has not lead to any disruptions. If weight loss has hit a plateau for more than 5-6 days an apple day 17

18 may be observed. In an Apple day you consume 6 apples within 24 hours with nothing else to eat or drink except water.
