6 Leadership a definition Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which an individual (or leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his or her followers (Gardner, 1993, p. 1).
7 Public Health Leadership Leadership is essential to public health capacity to improve the social determinants of health and health equity Leadership identified consistently as a key factor (75% of survey resp) Public health leaders and organizations play a vital role in advancing health equity (NCCDH, 2010) high-level leadership in all sectors health and otherwise is crucial to reducing health inequalities. (Butler-Jones, 2008) Little consensus about effective leadership practices and supporting or limiting factors - leadership needs are very divergent
8 Public Health Leadership Initiative Purpose: Build public health leadership capacity to address the social determinants of health to advance health equity: Identify the factors that influence individual and organizational public health leadership Identify strategies and tools to develop public health leadership Facilitate knowledge uptake among public health leaders
9 Initial Activities Conduct a rapid (systematic) review of literature Use appreciative inquiry to engage identified leaders and find out contributes to successful public health leadership Case learning with selected public health leaderorganizations Workshops and presentations
10 Literature review Review questions: What is the impact of public health leadership on action to address the social determinants of health and advance health equity? What are effective interventions to enhance public health leadership specifically as applied to the determinants of health and health equity?
11 Literature review - early stages 8 data bases searched: Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane, Campbell Collaboration, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA), PsycINFO,Social Science Abstracts, EBSCO Business Source Complete Citations found: Peer reviewed literature: 7203 Grey literature: 17 Title and abstract screened: 5535 Full text articles being reviewed: 487
12 Appreciative inquiry Purpose: identify factors or conditions that influence effective public health leadership to address social determinants of health and health equity What contributes to supporting leadership for addressing social determinants of health and health equity, including the most significant factors that enhance or limit leadership? What additional conditions should be present to achieve successful outcomes?
