1 Julia Finkelstein Web Bio Information Biography Biographical Statement Dr. Julia Finkelstein is the Follett Sesquicentennial Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University. She is also an adjunct Associate Professor at St. John's Research Institute in Bangalore, India, and a Fellow at the Center for Geographic Analysis, Harvard University. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University, Master of Public Health degree from Brown University, and Master of Science and Doctor of Science degrees in Epidemiology and Nutritional Epidemiology from Harvard University. Dr. Finkelstein is an epidemiologist with expertise in the design and conduct of randomized trials and cohort studies in resource-limited settings. The goal of the Finkelstein Laboratory is to elucidate the role of micronutrients in the etiology of adverse perinatal outcomes, to improve the health and survival of mothers and young children. This approach integrates epidemiology, nutrition, immunology and infectious diseases, and biostatistics, with emphasis on translating cutting-edge laboratory findings to inform interventions and public health approaches in at-risk populations. Current research focuses on the role of iron, vitamin B12, and folate in the etiology of anemia, infectious diseases, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, with active research projects in India and Latin America. Teaching Teaching and Advising Statement William Yeats put it best: Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. My training in public health, nutrition, epidemiology, and biostatistics have shaped my perspectives in teaching and mentoring. As a scientist and public health practitioner, I envision my role is to inspire students to find a public health problem that fascinates them, to challenge them to think critically about its etiology and burden, and to apply substantive knowledge and methodological skills to develop interventions and public health approaches to improve the health of at-risk populations.
2 I have extensive experience teaching epidemiology, GIS, and nutrition research methods to undergraduates, graduate students, and public health practitioners. This approach integrates epidemiology, nutrition, and biostatistics to establish a strong foundation in biological sciences and quantitative research methods, foster critical thinking and analytic methods, and apply skills to improve public health - and ultimately, to become leaders in the field of nutrition and global health. I also advise undergraduates in Global and Public Health Sciences and Human Biology Health and Society, and mentor undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral trainees as part of my research laboratory. Professional Current Professional Activities WHO External Expert, World Health Organization Guideline Meeting - Nutrition Actions Consultant, World Health Organization Consultant, Micronutrient Initiative Advisory Board Member, WorldMap Steering Committee, Harvard University Chair, Cornell Geospatial Forum Adjunct Faculty Appointments Adjunct Associate Professor, St. John s Research Institute, Bangalore, India Faculty Fellow, Center for Geographic Analysis, Harvard University Graduate Field Memberships Nutrition Epidemiology Global Development Latin American Studies Program and Center Affiliations Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future Program in Infection and Pathobiology Cornell Population Center Institute for African Development North East Scholars of South Asia South Asia Program Research Current Research Activities Our research focuses on the intersection of nutrition, infectious disease, and maternal and child health in resource-limited settings.
