1 AREAS OF INTEREST: Health of children under five in developing countries; Diarrheal disease; Water, sanitation, and hygiene; Global health disparities; Infectious diseases. EDUCATION: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology Emphasis in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Global Health Expected Graduation: 2018 Mentor: Joseph N. Eisenberg, PhD Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, LA Master of Public Health, International Health and Development Mentor: Joseph Keating, PhD 2009 Ohio University, Athens, Ohio Bachelor of Science in Microbiology 2008 ICF International, Rockville, MD Survey Manager & Biomarker Specialist PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Provided technical assistance to local survey implementing organizations (typically statistical agencies) on survey implementation within the MEASURE Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) project Responsibilities included working with stakeholders on survey design, questionnaire design, preparation of IRB submission documents, preparation of training materials, monitoring fieldwork, developing country-specific tabulation plans, data-checking, and writing and editing final reports Managed local cost budgets with host country implementing organizations Provided technical assistance to DHS staff and local survey implementing organizations on the procedures and biomarker collection techniques for specific biological specimens included in the DHS surveys. Common tests requiring biomarker collection: HIV, malaria, micronutrients, hemoglobin, and anthropometry. Provided leadership at the project level in specific areas of health by researching and developing questions for inclusion in survey instruments. Developed biomarker testing protocols for communicable and non-communicable diseases to meet emerging data needs. Spearheaded novel inclusion of HIV-incidence testing in Zambia DHS survey to include homebased testing and counseling for HIV, CD4 testing using the portable PIMA machine, laboratory HIV incidence testing, and assessment of viral load. Protocol development for this survey included sample size calculations for national and subnational HIV-incidence estimates as well
2 as considerations for ethical issues resulting from inclusion of home-based HIV testing and counseling in the ZDHS fieldwork. Led and/or facilitated interviewer training sessions to teach the survey instruments and tools to hundreds of field staff personnel over tenure at the DHS project. Coordinated the DHS project activities in bacteriological testing of water in population-based surveys Represented the DHS project on WHO and UNICEF technical working groups charged with monitoring drinking water quality at the global level and developing new indicators of water, sanitation, and hygiene. Had on-the-ground DHS survey experience in training and fieldwork monitoring in the following countries: Angola, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Tulane University Department of Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, LA Graduate Lab Assistant Managed a serosurvey (epidemiology research) of southeastern Louisiana for Chagas Disease including household questionnaire, environmental assessment, visual search for triatomine insects, rapid Chagas testing, and epidemiological data analysis in order to determine associated risks with participant seropositivity under Dr. Dawn Wesson Ohio University Tropical Disease Institute, Manabí, Ecuador Field Researcher Summer 2008/2009 Conducted a Cross-Sectional Household Survey of Diarrheal Prevalence in children under 5 years old within select communities of the coastal province of Manabí, Ecuador. Epidemiological analysis of data was used for a Master s level thesis. Headed survey teams to collect basic household demographic and research related information for Chagas disease related research conducted by Dr. Mario Grijalva Traveled with the Tropical Disease Institute under Drs. Joan Cunningham and Bill Romoser in the coastal province of Manabí, Ecuador to examine issues hindering community socioeconomic development and the impacts of Malaria and Dengue Fever incidence and prevalence, as well as water quality on the community Collected specific data on water and water management from household water drinking sources using a portable OXFAM Delagua Kit including thermotolerant coliform counts, chlorine levels, organophosphate and nitrate levels, ph, and turbidity of samples in order to determine security of community drinking water TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Michigan Health and Society: Introduction to Public Health: Fall 2014 Genetics Laboratory: Winter 2013 Substitute Teacher Recovery School District in New Orleans, LA: Spring 2010 Teaching Assistant at Tulane University Public Nutrition: Assessment and Advanced Analysis: Spring 2010
