2 100 FACTS ON WOMEN & GIRLS EDUCATION 1. Women represent 51% of the PhDs, 51% of business school applicants, 67% of college graduates, and more than 70% of 2012 Valedictorians in the US. In the academic year, women earned 57% of bachelor s degrees in all disciplines, 50% of bachelor s degrees in (Science & Engineering) S&E, and 61% of bachelor s degrees in non-s&e disciplines. In 84 years only 4 women -- Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow -- have been nominated for an Academy Award for best director. One 1 has won. 4 WOMEN ON BOARDS 18. In 2012, of the five best-paid executives at each of the Standard & Poor s 500 Index companies, 198 were women, or 8% of the total. Those high-achievers earned on average $5.3 million, 18% less than men according to data compiled by Bloomberg. (Bloomberg, 2013) 19. Female representation and compensation in CEO positions declines as budget size increases; for organizations with budgets over $50 million, women represent only 16% of leaders and experience a 23% wage gap. Women were more strategic in their charitable giving, with 78 percent creating an annual giving strategy and/or budget compared to 72 percent of men. As the wealthiest region, North America increased its HNWI wealth by 17% to reach US$14.88 trillion, though this growth was outpaced by Asia-Pacific, where HNWI wealth expanded by 18% to reach US$14.20 trillion. Women represent nearly 75% of tipped positions. The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13/hour and has not changed in 20 years. (National Women s Law Center 2014) 52. Raising the minimum wage would close the gender wage gap by 5%. In states where the minimum wage is at or above $8/hour, the gender wage gap is 18.1 cents, whereas states where the minimum wage is $7.25/hour, the gender wage gap is 23.3 cents. Women work two-thirds of the world s working hours, produce half of the world s food, but earn only 10% of the world s income and own less than 1% of the world s property. 8 56. The poverty rate among US women rose to 14.5% in 2010, up from 13.9% in 2009 the highest rate in 17 years. The extreme poverty rate among women was the highest ever recorded, climbing to 6.3% in 2010 from 5.9% in Extreme poverty means that your income is below half of the federal poverty line and by 2010, more than 7.5 million women had fallen into that dire category. (The Daily Beast 2011) 57. About 870 million people were estimated to suffer from chronic undernourishment in (in terms of dietary energy). This number represents 12.5% of the global population, or one in eight people. Women in sub-saharan Africa collectively spend about 40 billion hours per year fetching water. This significantly impacts women s employment opportunities and time spent on household duties. On average women make up about 43 per cent of the agricultural labor force in developing countries - ranging from approximately 20 per cent in Latin America to 50 per cent in parts of Africa and Asia, and exceeding 60 per cent in a few countries. (FAO 2011) VIOLENCE / TRAFFICKING 61. Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. (Canadian Women s Foundation: Facts About Violence Against Women) 62. While an estimated 17 percent of women in the general population become victims at some point in their lives, a 2006 study of female veterans financed by the Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that between 23 percent and 33 percent of uniformed women in the US had been assaulted. (New York Times 2012) 63. According to the United Nations one of every three women on the planet will be physically or sexually abused in her lifetime. 9 65. On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. In 2011, from the 89 police reported spousal homicides, 76 of the victims (over 85%) were women. It is estimated that from 100 to 140 million girls and women have undergone some form of genital mutilation/cutting, and at least 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the practice every year. (UNFPA 2012) 67. Women and girls comprise 80 percent of the estimated 800,000 people trafficked annually, with the majority (79 percent) trafficked for sexual exploitation. (UN Women 2011) 68. As many as 1 in 4 women experience physical and/or sexual violence during pregnancy which increases the likelihood of having a miscarriage, still birth and abortion. (UN Women 2011) 69. Domestic violence alone costs approximately USD 1.16 billion in Canada and USD 5.8 billion in the United States. In Australia, violence against women and children costs an estimated USD billion per year. (UN Women 2011) 70. Among women aged between 15 and 44, acts of violence cause more death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined. (UN Women 2011) 71. According to UN estimates, about 2.5 million people from 127 countries have been trafficked to 137 countries for purposes such as forced labor, sexual exploitation, the removal of organs and body parts, forced marriages, child adoption and begging. Women-owned hedge funds produced an average return of 9.1% compared with 5.8% among male-dominated funds, yet women manage only about 3% of the 9,000 hedge funds in the US. In Bangladesh 70 percent of female entrepreneurs reported being self-taught in skills needed to run a business compared to 44 percent of male business owners. (World Bank, 2012) MILITARY 79. From 1973 (when the draft ended) to 2010, the number of enlisted women rose from 2% to 14% and women commissioned officers from 4% to 17%. (Benchmarking Women s Leadership 2013) 80. Women make up 11 percent of the officers in the top five officer categories today and 15 percent of all military officers. This represents significant progress into the top leadership positions, as in 1994 they represented 13 percent of all officers but less than 5 percent of the top five officer ranks.
