The main objective of the UI Visiting Scholar Professional Development Program in Periodontics is to provide an outstanding and customized professional experience for dentists or dental specialists who are interested in advancing their knowledge in periodontics and oral implantology. Individuals participating in this program will have the opportunity to attend periodontal seminars and lectures, observe periodontal faculty members and/or residents in a clinical setting, and participate in research-related activities; they will not have patient care responsibilities. Participants may pursue either a six-month or a twelvemonth program and receive continuing education credit for their participation. Dr. Juan Gonzalez de Buitrago Garcia (above, left) is the first participant in this new program. Dr. Gonzalez earned his DDS from the University of Grenada (Spain) in After that, he initiated his doctorate studies in the same institution, which he combined with part-time private practice work. He also completed a Periodontics Expert course with Dr. Mariano Sanz at the University Complutense of Madrid in His research interests are in the area of periodontal and alveolar bone regeneration. Dr. Gustavo Avila, Department of Periodontics (above, right), will serve as the mentor for this program. The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. Sreedevi Srinivasan The College of Dentistry welcomes a new faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics. Dr. Sreedevi Srinivasan started at the college on May 15, Sreedevi recently received her certificate in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA. Previously she had been a post-doctoral research fellow at Boston University. Dr. Srinivasan s B.D.S. was awarded from Ragas Dental College and Hospital in India. She will be involved in teaching the orthodontic residents and building her faculty practice. Dr. Srinivasan s spouse is a faculty member in Periodontics: Dr. Satheesh Elangovan. 2 Page 2 Dr. Satheesh Elangovan to Serve as an Academic Editor for PeerJ Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics, will serve as one of the academic editors for the dentistry section of PeerJ, a new open access, peerreviewed scientific journal covering research in the biological and medical sciences. Founded by the previous publishers of PLoS One and Mendeley, PeerJ was voted earlier this year by the Chronicles of Higher Education as one of the top ten tech innovations in Additional information about this new journal can be obtained by visiting their web site ( Dr. Christopher Squier Visits Malaysia (Left): Dr. Christopher Squier, Dows and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, gave a presentation, The Role of the Dental Profession in Tobacco Cessation and Control in Malaysia, during his visit to the Asian Institute for Medical Science and Technology in Kedah, Malaysia. The dean of the dental faculty at the institute presented Dr. Squier with a plaque to thank him for his visit and presentation. Dr. Yiming Li to Present Noon Seminar on July 30 Dr. Yiming Li, a professor of restorative dentistry and director of the Center for Dental Research, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, will visit the UI College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics on July 30, Dr. Li will present a noon seminar entitled Safety Considerations of Dental Materials from Research to Practice. Dr. Li was educated at Indiana University and served as a faculty at Indiana before joining Loma Linda University in He previously served as a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Dental Products Panel. He is a consultant to the FDA and American Dental Association. Dr. Li has more than 260 publications, has received more than $16 million in research funding, and has lectured in more than 10 countries.

New Iowa State Health and Wellness Plan to Offer Broader Insurance Coverage for Poor Iowans The new Iowa Health and Wellness Plan, a new state health insurance program which will begin in January 2014, is predicted to offer coverage to approximately 150,000 Iowans. It will be an alternative to Medicaid but will offer broader insurance coverage. The current state insurance program, IowaCare, provides coverage for approximately 70,000 Iowans. IowaCare was initiated in 2005 and has been financed by both the federal and state government. Dr. Peter Damiano, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, and director of the UI Public Policy Center, commented that the current IowaCare program only allows most hospital treatment at UI Hospitals & Clinics or at Broadlawns Medical Center, Des Moines. There are several public clinics IowaCare patients can use for their primary care, but logistics is sometimes an issue. In the new Iowa Health and Wellness Plan, patients will be able to utilize clinics and hospitals in their own area of residence. 4 The College of Dentistry Has Booth at the University Heights Farmers Market Page 4 The College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics had a booth at the University Heights Farmers Market on July 2, which featured a display on soda pop and tooth decay. Visitors to the booth received a toothbrush and magnet as well as informative materials about becoming a patient in the student clinics and private practice clinics at the college. The market is held outside St. Andrews Church on Melrose Avenue from 5-7 p.m. every first Tuesday of the month from July through October.
