2 Stopping smoking

3 1 Philip stops smoking.

4 2 Philip is visited by Lynne his support worker from the Community Nurse Team. Lynne is helping him with his Health Action Plan. It s a good idea to have one. It can help you become more healthy. Stopping smoking

5 3 Lynne takes Philip s blood pressure. It s a bit high.

6 4 Lynne weighs him. They talk about things that Philip could do to be more healthy. Stopping smoking

7 5 Philip tells Lynne he smokes 20 cigarettes a day. He knows this is bad for his health. He says he wants to stop.

8 6 Lynne tells him he can get help by visiting the Stop Smoking Clinic at East Laith Gate House. Stopping smoking

9 7 At this clinic he could make an appointment to see an advisor. Philip can visit the advisor every week. The advisor will support Philip through his first few weeks of not smoking. Or...

10 8 he can have visits from a specialist Learning Disability nurse who can also help him to stop smoking. Stopping smoking

11 9 Jacky asks Philip some questions about his smoking. He is still sure he wants to stop.

12 10 Jacky gives him lots of information about smoking. She tells him that cigarettes are very bad for his health. Cigarettes can cause cancer. Cigarettes can damage your heart. Cigarettes can damage your lungs. Cigarettes can damage your teeth and gums. Smoking is bad for every part of your body. Stopping smoking

13 11 Jacky shows Philip a jar of tar. Tar is in all cigarettes. The tar is very sticky and bad for you. It clogs up your lungs, then you can t breath very well.

14 12 Jacky shows him lots of other bad things that are in cigarettes. These are called chemicals. There are thousands of bad chemicals in each cigarette. Some of these chemicals can cause cancer. Stopping smoking

15 13 Jacky tells him that the smoke from your cigarette is not only bad for you, but it is also bad for other people. Because of this the government say you cannot smoke in a public place, so Philip has to stand outside in the cold to smoke. People don t like cigarette smoke.

16 14 Jacky shows Philip a short film about the good things that will happen to him when he has stopped smoking. Stopping smoking

17 15 Jacky tells him... He will be healthier. He will be able to breathe more easily. His blood pressure may go down. He will have lots more energy. He is less likely to get cancer and other bad diseases.

18 16 and he will have more money to spend on the things he really wants. Stopping smoking

19 17 Jacky uses a machine that measures Philips level of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a very bad gas that gets in your lungs when you smoke.

20 18 Philip blows into the machine. Stopping smoking

21 19 The machine shows Jacky how much carbon monixide is in his lungs. The reading is high. When he stops smoking the reading will be low.

22 20 Jacky shows Philip the different products he can use to help him stop smoking. Philip chooses to use patches and an inhalator. Stopping smoking

23 21 Jacky gives Philip a letter to take to his doctors receptionist. The letter tells the doctor which products Philip wants to use to help him stop smoking.

24 22 Philip gives the letter to the receptionist who will pass it on to the doctor. Then the doctor will write him a prescription. Stopping smoking

25 23 Philip goes to the chemist with his prescription and gets his patches and inhalator.

26 24 Jacky shows him how to put the patch on. She explains to him he should not smoke whilst wearing a patch. Stopping smoking

27 25 You can hardly see it.

28 26 Jacky shows him how to use his inhalator. She puts a special capsule into the inhalator. He can change this capsule several times throughout the day. Stopping smoking

29 27 When Philip wants a cigarette he now uses his inhalator. He doesn t have to go outside anymore, he can use the inhalator in a public place.

30 28 Philip has now stopped smoking. He has more energy. He can taste his food better. His clothes smell fresher. His feels healthier. He has more energy. Philip is enjoying life. Stopping smoking

31 29 Philip hasn t had a cigarette for 4 weeks. Jacky gives him a certificate. Well done Philip.
