1 DSB WEEKLY NO. 717 January 30, 2006 Drs. Alexandre Vieira and Adriana Modesto to Receive 2006 William J. Gies Award Husband and wife team, Drs. Alexandre Vieira, formerly UI Pediatrics, and Adriana Modesto, formerly Dows, have been selected for the 2006 William J. Gies Award held by the International Association for Dental Research and American Association for Dental Research (AADR). The award is given for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research during the preceding year. Drs. Vieira and Modesto were working at The University of Iowa when they published their research. They are now working at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. The award will be presented during the opening ceremonies of the AADR 35 th Annual Meeting on March 8, 2006, in Orlando, Florida. The winning paper, MSXI, PAX9, and TGFA Contribute to Tooth Agenesis in Humans, suggests that the MSXI, PAX9, and TGFA genes play a role in isolated dental agenesis. UI Libraries Cancels Subscription to Current Contents Dr. Deborah Dawson Selected to Serve on the Editorial Board of Journal of Dental Research Dr. Deborah Dawson, Preventive and Community Dentistry, and collegiate director of biostatistics, has been appointed to serve on the editorial board of Journal of Dental Research (JDR). She will attend her first board meeting at the upcoming IADR/AADR meeting in Orlando, Florida. Jim Herd, Ed Media The UI Libraries is canceling their Ovid database subscription to Current Contents as of January The cancellation is occurring because there is a content overlap of 100% for Current Contents in ISI s Web of Science database and also considerable overlap with the National Library of Medicine s PubMed. The usage of Current Contents has dropped significantly during the past several years and the overlapping, along with the drop in usage, no longer justifies the annual $20,000+ subscription. The College of Dentistry is looking for team participants. If you are interested in walking/running for the College of Dentistry s Relay for Life team, please contact Penni Ryan (344 DSB; penniryan@uiowa.edu). The deadline for signing up is February 7. The Johnson County Relay for Life hopes to raise $250,000 for cancer research, education and advocacy this year.

He put on his brakes but the truck failed to stop and crashed into the tollbooth, smashing it. As the trucker surveyed the damage, a second truck pulled up. Workers scrambled out and began reconstructing the tollbooth with a white putty. Before long, it looked as good as new! Puzzled, the trucker asked about the white putty substance. 3 Senator Charles Grassley Visits the UI College of Dentistry Senator Charles Grassley accepted an invitation from the UI branch of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) to tour the College of Dentistry. On Thursday, January 19, 2006, Grassley visited Iowa City and stopped at the dental college. Josh Everts, president of the local branch of the ASDA, said, We wanted to get his viewpoint on political issues that affect dental students and what the dental profession can do to better represent itself politically. Dental students queried Grassley about several topics, including Social Security, malpractice suits, student loan issues, Medicare, and the need for more dentists to care for an increasing older population that may have special needs. Senator Grassley advised the students that getting involved and being active (in the political process) is one of the best ways to improve your profession politically.
