1 Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Preventative Programme in Yorkshire

2 The Children s Society has developed a CSE Service Model, aligned with the seven essential principles¹ in the See Me, Hear Me framework. These are the defining principles of safeguarding children from CSE² and The Children s Society s model is based around them, while also drawing on our extensive experience of service delivery, research and best practice approaches. Our CSE Preventative Programme in Yorkshire is one of a number of services that can be offered to young people under our service model. The programme aims to: n raise awareness of sexual exploitation and the associated risk n help with the early identification of grooming or vulnerability to sexual exploitation n contribute to better responses for children and young people at risk, ideally before any abuse takes place or risk escalates. In Yorkshire, we offer: 1. Targeted group support to young people 2. Bespoke training aimed at professionals. 1. The seven principles are : 1. The child s best interests must be the top priority. 2. Participation of children and young people. 3. Enduring relationships and support. 4. Comprehensive problem-profiling. 5. Effective information-sharing within and between agencies. 6. Supervision, support and training for staff. 7. Evaluation and review. 2. 3 I was referred to The Children s Society by social services. I wasn t going to school. And I was at risk from child sexual exploitation. Becky

4 1. Our targeted group support: This service is aimed at young people with an identified vulnerability to CSE. The emphasis is on prevention by working with young people to: n increase knowledge n develop protective factors n increase resilience n lower the risk of CSE. Content of the programme The programme will generally consist of between three and six interactive sessions tailored to meet the needs of the group. Session length will be agreed with the setting; but they will generally last between 60 and 90 minutes and take place at venues, times and days of the week that are accessible for the young people involved. Groups will consist of between five to ten young people. It s made me realise how dangerous something so normal can be and how it s so wrong. Young person, 15 years old Topics will be tailored to meet the needs of the group, but may include: n sex, consent and the law n healthy/unhealthy relationships n CSE, grooming and protective behaviours n drugs, alcohol (and CSE) n internet safety, sexting, revenge porn, cyber bullying and the law n sex, contraception, the effects of pornography. Referral pathways n Young people are identified and referred by your school/setting as being vulnerable to CSE. n Young people will need to be of a similar age and ability we will discuss your requirements with you. Young people identified for targeted group work could, for example: n be living in a chaotic or dysfunctional household n have a history of abuse (physical, emotional, risk of forced marriage/honour based violence) n have poor mental/emotional health/low self-esteem n be living in residential care n be running away.

5 2. Our bespoke training for professionals: We provide training for groups of professionals working with children or young people who may be at risk or experiencing CSE. This training can also be tailored to deliver to parents. Numbers and content will be agreed and tailored to individual settings. What training do we offer? 1. A CSE awareness briefing covering issues including: What is child sexual exploitation and grooming? What are the risks and indicators? What are effective strategies to support children and young people affected by CSE? 2. A bespoke half-day training session specifically tailored to your needs. The session will explore the issues covered in the CSE awareness briefing, plus additional topics such as sexting, pornography, young people who run away or go missing, young people with learning disabilities or difficulties and young people from minority backgrounds. The Children s Society has supported children and young people affected by CSE across West Yorkshire since 2008, and we have a proven track record of delivering effective child-focused interventions. I will ensure I always listen to students and look beyond presenting behaviour. School professional

6 It is a painful fact that many children and young people in Britain today are still suffering extreme hardship, abuse and neglect. Too often their problems are ignored and their voices unheard. Now it is time to listen and to act.
