1 The Gawad Inoturan (Inoturan Award) Who is Jose Inoturan? Jose I. Inoturan is the founding president of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association. He is among the first students of the Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in our country. Mr. Inoturan graduated as a nurse from the School of Nursing. He was then working in a government hospital and was granted by UNICEF a scholarship to take up B.S. in Physical Therapy to respond to the urgent need of hospitals all over the Philippines to have trained physical therapists. In the absence of a government regulating body, the first PT s took it upon themselves to form a professional organization in December 8, As a leader in the field of PT, he was attuned to the causes and needs of the organization and the profession. He made sure that a physical therapy is a distinct and different practice from massage. It was said that he either led or participated in the development of the PT bill that was later approved as R.A Mr. Inoturan is a leader in Philippine physical therapy. He was a visionary who saw the potential for growth and development of the physical therapy profession. His zeal and devotion has allowed the Philippine Physical therapy Association to exist up to this day. Mr. Inoturan passed away on October He was given a post-humous SERVICE AWARD at the PPTA Annual Convention in December What is the Gawad Inoturan? The Gawad Inoturan is to recognize members of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association who have made or continues to make a significant contribution to the growth of the physical therapy profession through excellent and proficient practice; those who willingly

2 volunteer their time, effort and exceptional ideas to the professional organization; to those who initiate activities and actions that promote the physical therapy profession. There are three awards given through the Gawad Inoturan. 1. Natatanging Pisikal Terapist /Distinguished Physical Therapist Award (Excellence in physical therapy practice) This award recognizes a physical therapist who has contributed significantly to the growth of physical therapy practice in the Philippines. The awardee is well-known and respected as a physical therapist. He/She exhibits exceptional skills as a therapist and has made remarkable achievements relevant to PT. 2. Lingkod PPTA /PPTA Service Award This award recognizes a physical therapist who has rendered meritorious deeds to the Association directly or to any of its duly recognized committee or through any special projects of the Association since its inception. The awardee must have demonstrated, through concrete activities and outputs, oneness with the mission and vision of the Association. 3. Natatanging Simulain sa PT/PT Initiative Award Recognizes an outstanding project or endeavor that significantly contributes to the growth of physical therapy practice in the Philippines. The initiative efforts given for this project is meant to improve PT practice. This project may be towards delivery of service to the community, improvement of expertise and competence of PT practitioners Eligibility Natatanging Pisikal Terapist/ Distinguished Physical Therapist Award A nominee for the award must be: 1. A member of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association.

3 2. Known to have moral and ethical integrity. 3. Actively practicing physical therapy in any of the following fields: Client care, Education or Teaching, Administration or Research. The definition of each is explicit in the Standards of Practice of the PPTA. 4. Able to demonstrate through supporting documents his/her distinct and significant contributions towards the growth of the profession in any of the areas of practice. Lingkod PPTA/ PPTA Service Award A nominee for the award must be: 1. An active member of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association. 2. Known to have moral and ethical integrity. 3. Able to demonstrate through supporting documents his/her distinct and significant contributions towards the growth of the professional organization. Natatanging Simulain sa PT/ PT Initiative Award A nominated project must: 1. Be an ongoing activity/project. 2. Benefit the physical therapy profession or benefit physical therapists. 3. Have an organized structure; objectives, activities, etc.

4 Selection process The committee will undertake the following: 1. Go through the curriculum and portfolio submitted. 2. Contact personas who will give credence to the nominee and his/her achievements. 3. Rate each nominee for awards. The distinct contributions of the nominees will be judged on the following: 1. Scope of those benefiting from the nominees professional activities. 2. The honor and reputation bestowed on the profession through his/her professional actions. 3. Advancements gained by the profession. Guidelines for Nominations Nominees or nominators must submit the following: 1. Accomplished nomination form. 2. Letter of nomination/s that states justification for nomination. There may be more than one letter of nomination for each nominee. However, separate letters of nomination should be done if one wishes to nominate two or more for the different awards. 3. Professional portfolio of the nominee: a. Curriculum vitae that highlights contributions and achievements to physical therapy practice.

5 b. Documents and documentations to show proof of achievements; eg. photos, teaching materials, protocol sheets, etc. 4. Submit nominations to Committee on Awards c/o Mia R. Rotor. Last day for nominations is on Sunday, November 14, Awardees will be informed by November 30, Awarding will be on December 4, 2010 during the Annual PPTA Convention.
