Scott Arneson Elected Councilor of ADEA Section Penni Ryan Elected Secretary of the ADEA CE Section College of Dentistry Hosts Columbus Junction Students (Project Hope) Lend a Hand to A Co-Worker Filling Station Menu and Notice Recent Publications Go Green Committee to Receive I.O.W.A. The College of Dentistry s Go Green team will receive the Improving Our Workplace Award (I.O.W.A.) in May for their efforts to reduce the college s environmental footprint. Committee members include Nancy Slach, Periodontics; Maggie Hogan, Dows; Scott Arneson, Dental Administration; Dr. Peter Damiano, Preventive & Community Dentistry; Dr. David Drake, Endodontics and Dows; Dr. Mike Kanellis, Dental Clinic Administration; Ron Roskam, Dental Informatics; Ann Synan, Dental Clinic Administration; Megan Danforth (D); and Julie Reynolds, graduate fellow in Preventive & Community. Since 2008, the committee has produced two waste audits (2008 and 2011), which have resulted in several improvements: biodegradable plates and silverware at the Filling Station; reusable shopping bags and water bottles; automatic computer turn off at the end of the work day; paper forms (no longer used) are now scrap paper; lab coats may be placed in provided lockers instead of daily disposal; the practice of composting is spreading from one department to others, including Dining Services; styrofoam packing is being reused; and the College s Sustainability Pledge is being used by faculty, staff, and students to help the UI attain the goals of Vision The College of Dentistry Go Green Team appreciates being nominated by Deb Hoyle, Dental Administration, for this award. It brings a positive focus to the entire UI colleges efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle, says Maggie Hogan on behalf of the committee. It takes more than the Green Team to accomplish the goals of the University of Iowa Vision We appreciate all of the progress we have made toward becoming a greener college. William Robbins, DDS, MA Global Diagnosis Thursday, May 3, 2012 Making the Connection 6 5 Penni Ryan, director, Alumni Relations, has been elected secretary of the American Dental Education Association s (ADEA) CE Section. Scott Arneson, Dental Administration, has been elected councilor of the American Dental Education Association s Business and Finance Section. He has previously served as chair of the same section.

2 Page 2 College of Dentistry Hosts Eleven Columbus Junction Middle School Students Participating in Project Hope The College of Dentistry was pleased to provide a simulation experience for eleven Columbus Junction middle school students who are participants of a career education pipeline program for the health sciences called Project HOPE. The students visited the College of Dentistry on Thursday, April 12, 2012, and received information about dentistry and instructions on waxing from Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Department of Operative Dentistry, before spending time in the Bench Lab getting hands-on experience. Third-year dental students, Chelsea Twohig, HSDA chair, and Jeremy Grabouski; second-year students, Keira Olson, Katie Anfinsen, and Matthew Smith; and first-year students, Ryan Humbert and Tiffanie Smith Royse, assisted Dr. Hernandez with instruction and supervision during the exercise. The group was later given a tour of the building by third-year students, Ryan Teahen and Matt French. (Left): Chelsea Twohig (D3) demonstrates one of the first steps of waxing. Anyone who wishes to help Crystal by contributing vacation time may pick up a catastrophic leave donation form from either Jan Hinrichsen, S320, or by clicking benefits/forms/contrib.pdf. Once the form is completed, please send it to the Benefits Office, USB. Any contributions of one hour or more on Crystal s behalf will be truly appreciated. A backward poet writes inverse. I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The flight attendant looks at him and says, I m sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger. Two hats were hanging on a hat rack in the hallway. One hat said to the other: You stay here; I ll go on ahead. There was the person who sent ten puns to friends with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
