Ola Henfridsson WRITING AND PUBLISHING JOURNAL PAPERS IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Talk outline Why publish? Rankings Research contribution What is a case? Case presentation Publication strategy Qualitative research in top journals Review process management
Motivations: Why publish? Carrier- related motivations ú Promotion ú Needed for PhD degree ú Community recognition ú Secure continued funding Quality assurance and development ú Writing as thinking ú Community feedback Cumulative tradition ú Progress of the discipline
Journal Ranking Different criteria for journal rankings ú Peer perceptions Opinion surveys See e.g., ú Impact factor (ISI/Web of Science) ú Authority- based (e.g., AIS basket of A- journals) Target journal lists
Journal Publishing Peer perceptions/opinion surveys
Impact factor
AIS Basket of Top Journals MISQ ISR JAIS JMIS EJIS ISJ JSIS JIT
Research Contribution offer a contribution that is sufficiently original and significant so as to warrant a full- length article for the authors to develop and present their argument What is a research contribution? ú A combination of contribution target, added knowledge, relevance, and evidence Contribution components ú Contribution target ú ú ú Identified and reviewed with the purpose of developing an interesting and relevant gap in the literature Returned to in the discussion Entire paper framed to illuminate this target Added knowledge What are the new insights? Packaging is important here: model, method, theory development, theory refinement, new insights, guidelines, design principles Relevance Relationship to practice and society Evidence The extent to which the generation of knwoledge is trustworthy and plausible Combination of quantity and quality Combination
Research Contribution #2 Consistency ú Theoretical home ú Methodological home Remember that the map is the territory ú Not to exotic ú Better safe than sorry Lastly, the originality of the manuscript is determined in light of the author s own publications too
What is a case? Commonly misconceived an instance of something more general Determines the relation between theory, RQ, and case Critical case Representative case
Case presentation Depends on research genre Case as process ú Temporal bracketing Rationale for stages? Link to theoretical argument? Encounters Vs. Episodes ú Process tracing to identify causal mechanism? ú Inductive process to generate new theory Case as illustration
Publication strategy Seek quality rather than quantity Target a journal that matches the potential of your research ú Do not waste a good case study on poor outlets Each publication will de- value your case story in subsequent publication attempts You will consume time that can be used more productively ú Do not waste reviewers, editors and your own time by submitting manuscripts that can be improved in the first place Would additional empirical material/data sources improve my chances? Would more work on the framing improve my chances? Would another round of editing improve my chances?
Review Process Management How should review feedback be treated? The SE/AE report is a chance to understand those who you are writing for Considering all review comments can jeopardize the delivery of a consistent manuscript, i.e., it is possible to disagree with reviewer comments AE recommendations harder to confront Major revision typically requires a completely re- written manuscript Spend considerable energy on the revision note
Qualitative Research in Top Journals Streamline Mimic good examples Do not offend people with other epistemological perspectives Address common weaknesses: research process decription, data sources and analysis, and so on
Many thanks for your attention!
Publications: an important component of a research career No. Faculty No Pubs No. Publications Journals 11 Journals 10 Journals 4 Journals Eng, Cao, Cousins, Straub (2003). Measuring Researcher-Production in Information Systems, JAIS, 3(6), pp
MISQ process in brief First submit (Submission letter) Screening by EiC or SE (if yes) AE recruited Review panel formed AE report written (submitted to SE) SE takes the decision Developmental reviewing
