3 NHS 70 and the Youth Volunteering and Social Action Campaign Alongside the NHS70 celebrations the youth volunteering campaign will run from Jan 2018 to Dec 2018 The campaign will work with health and care organisations to develop youth volunteering The campaign will also be used as an opportunity to encourage volunteer led partnerships between health settings and the VCS sector 3

4 There are four ways organisations can pledge their support: Develop volunteer placements for young people aged between Create other opportunities for young people to be involved in the development or delivery of health services Grow partnerships with other organisations locally to identify how youth social action might better be supported Develop ideas for initiatives of how young volunteers and social action can support better health outcomes, patient experience or future workforce development within their locality. 4

5 Why build a picture of value and impact of youth volunteering and social action? To provide a convincing argument to strategic leads, potential funders, NHS providers etc. To articulate the impact of the young volunteers contribution so we can thank and acknowledge them and because volunteers who see the impact and value in what they do will often continue to volunteer long-term To demonstrate the value of being a volunteer to others To win staff hearts and minds DISCUSSION: Why is it important to you/your organisation? 5

6 What is the value/impact to the young volunteer? I think that being in hospital can be scary, stressful or lonely for children, and I wanted to help to make their stay in hospital less daunting. INTERNALLY identify what works well and how you can improve your volunteering programme inspire and motivate volunteers and staff by showing them the difference volunteering makes use feedback from those who benefit from your activities to improve the services you provide better understand how volunteering makes a difference to your organisation provide evidence that can be used to get more support and funding for volunteering within your organisation

EXTERNALLY raise the profile of your organisation demonstrate to other organisations and the community what volunteers are achieving showcase the social and personal benefits of volunteering to attract new volunteers provide information to policy makers on the of volunteering, to help to influence policy and legislation provide evidence to funders on the difference volunteers make share information about what works well

19 We had never done anything to measure our services on the voluntary side. Having something that was already tested and put together for the purpose was a prime motivator for me.

21 WHAT WE KNOW IMPACT ON SERVICE USERS Improved satisfaction levels of service users Higher self-esteem, wellbeing and mood lower social exclusion, isolation, anxiety and loneliness Improved health behaviours such as disease management, parenting skills, nutrition and hydration peer support leads to significant improvements for people with long-term physical and mental health conditions Improved social, emotional, mental and physical wellbeing of residents in care homes Weaker evidence of impact on clinical outcomes

22 WHAT WE KNOW IMPACT ON SERVICES Significant positive impact on releasing nurses time Can help providers be more responsive to local needs Peer support can reduce patient time in hospital Reducing winter pressures: Volunteers helped reduced isolation of older people and put them on the radar Financial value to trusts between 250k and 700k Mixed evidence on the impact on service demand It is often assumed that involving volunteers results in cost savings, but this is not always true

23 WHAT WE KNOW IMPACT ON VOLUNTEERS Well evidenced impact on the improvement of social and emotional wellbeing, self-confidence and selfesteem of volunteers, especially as age increases Improved social relationships Volunteering can help people to adhere to NEF s a part of the five ways to wellbeing: Connect, Be active, Take notice, Keep learning, Give The causal direction between volunteering and health not firmly established

24 WHAT WE KNOW IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES Enhanced social cohesion and reduced antisocial behaviour among young people Placement opportunities that may lead to employment Formal volunteering can encourage people to get involved in other activities in their communities Social networks can increase social capital - the quality and quantity of complex relationships has an impact on mortality and morbidity comparable to smoking and alcohol consumption

25 IMPACT IN THE NHS FROM RECRUITING AND MANAGING VOLUNTEERS IN NHS PROVIDERS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE To people, patients and service users enhances patient experience and outcomes enables people to take control and manage their own health and wellbeing To services and staff extends and adds value to service facilitates new approaches to health and care including community centred approaches and social prescribing helps the NHS to engage with communities and citizens in new ways helps to connect up services and provide more integrated care engages hard to reach groups and tackles health inequalities helps change the culture of organisations and the way they operate supports governance and accountability brings unique perspectives and credibility helps access new skills, knowledge and experience helps free up staff time improves staff satisfaction To volunteers supports the health and wellbeing of the volunteer provides opportunities to meet people and get to know the community develops skills and experience through volunteering

26 INCREASING THE IMPACT OF YOUNG VOLUNTEERS Rethink the language used, from duty to value Codesign volunteering opportunities on a personal level Rethink recruitment strategies and make it possible for young people to start from scratch Build in recognition, reward and sociability Build partnerships with relevant brands and organisations

Robust evidence can: Improve Identify ways to improve the volunteering service and maximise your impact Prove Robustly show the impact of the service to others Sustain Increase chances of securing ongoing funding for your volunteering service (e.g. building the case for ongoing involvement) 28

29 Nesta Helping in Hospitals Choosing your measurement tools: Validity: The tool has to measure the right concept Reliability: the tool has to accurately measure that concept i.e. it should give the same measurement if two patients are in the same situation or if a patient is in the same situation at a later point. A good way to ensure this particularly surveys is to use validated tools. These are tools that have been rigorously tested and approved for both qualities. 29

30 Nesta Helping in Hospitals Brief summarised examples of tools used by the hospitals: Improved patient experience FFT / FFT with added a question Improved mood Reduced length of stay Improved nutrition levels Releasing time to care Reduced anxiety levels Smiley face scale mood tester Outcome data is already collected Measuring nutritional intake (proportion of food eaten) / Did you get enough help from staff to eat your meal Measured staff time spent on skilled and unskilled tasks / Asked staff if a volunteer assisted you was it helpful? Measured levels of distress in dementia patients before and after volunteer activity 30

35 Volunteering Matters - Driving appropriate savings The Institute for Volunteering Research calculated return on investment across a sample of NHS organisations using the Volunteer Investment and Value Audit Toolkit. They propose that: In hospital trusts, the value of volunteering was on average 700K per annum In mental health trusts, it was 500K per annum In primary care trusts, this amounted to 250K per annum. For every 1 invested in a volunteering programme, there was an average return of up to
