2 Introduction The Northern Territory Government has developed a series of sport education forums to increase the knowledge of coaches that will empower them to build the physical development and competency of their junior athletes along their sporting pathway. Coaches will learn how to create a training environment that will build superior sport specific skills and develop mentally tough athletes. You will be exposed to current best practice coaching methods across a range of topics that are practical to implement into any coaching environment and that can be applied throughout the different stages of athlete development. The forums are free to attend and participants can choose to either attend the full day schedule or only the sessions that are most relevant to them. Sessions are open to anyone with an interest in developing junior sport, whether it be coaching an under-6 team to an aspiring elite athlete Dates Darwin: 20 & 21 February Nhulunbuy: 23 & 24 February Alice Springs: 27 & 28 February Tennant Creek: 2 & 3 March Katherine: 2 & 3 March

9 Key Note Speakers Russell Parsons, OAM "Everything you (as a coach) do and everything you say will be dinner conversation in each athlete s home over the next few days" Russell Parsons has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his achievements in sport development across Australia, in particular the development of grass roots coaches. He has been a part of the Athletics Australia, Olympic Athlete Program as the head coach of the national junior team (U20) and has held the position of coaching coordinator for Athletics Victoria north-west region for the support program for isolated athletes. What do coaches of advanced or advancing athletes want? Russell s view is that they want the athlete delivered to them (or retained by them), to be able to perform basic skills and drills that can be extended and refined to produce superior outcomes. The skill of the development coach will in large measure and determine the standard achieved. Russell has worked extensively with 2014 HFS keynote speaker, Bill Sweetenham, to develop athletes from the grass roots to the elite level. Training hard is easy, however, training smart is the goal that should be sought. Russell s presentations are a must see for any coach developing junior athletes in the NT.

13 About the Program Development Implications for the Coach Working with Junior Athletes Coaches are exposed to junior athletes at varying developmental stages of growth and maturity throughout their careers. This presentation will describe the core athlete development principles coaches of all levels need to be aware of to develop their athletes. In addition, it will highlight the technical, physical, psychological and social implications coaches are faced with when working with athletes across different stages of development. Optimising Motivation and Engagement with Junior Athletes In an ideal world, coaches would be able to spend hours upon hours with their up and coming junior athletes to develop them along an elite pathway. However, the reality for NT coaches is that most are volunteers and it is impossible to invest the same time as a paid professional, so it is important that athletes take ownership of their development. This presentation will cover different strategies coaches can explore to create an environment that will motivate junior athletes to experiment outside of the formal training environment. Optimising Social and Emotional Development in Junior Athletes What are the social and emotional considerations coaches need to be aware of when coaching junior athletes? This session will discuss development outcomes that can be embedded into training sessions that will empower coaches to create an enjoyable and challenging environment for junior athletes regardless of their age, gender and ability. Appropriate Challenges to Achieve Long Term Goals Competency Based Training Junior athletes have specific individual needs based on their level of physical competence. When exposing junior athletes to competition, coaches need to be aware of the importance of addressing the issue of weekly, monthly and yearly competition versus a competition held in 10 years time.

14 About the Program (continued) Facilitating Optimum Skill Learning Individualised Skill Learning Environments This presentation will look at how coaches can develop skill and exercise progression with their junior athletes through each stage of their development. Developing Confidence Do s and Don t Develop an understanding of the link between a junior athlete s confidence and their fear. Learn about strategies that coaches can implement into the training environment that build confidence in junior athletes and discuss what coaches may be doing (unknowingly) that can be harmful to a young person s confidence. Building Resilient Athletes In the NT, we need to build tough athletes. From our weather extremes, to overcoming the tyranny of distance to compete, coaches need to foster a never say die attitude into the junior athletes they coach. This presentation provides strategies coaches can embed in their training environment that will build the type of resilience and skills necessary for junior athletes to not only to succeed in sport but also in life. Assessing and Developing Physical Competence Coaches need to be able to determine a junior athlete s physical competence level and then facilitate an appropriate training environment to develop their sport skills. This presentation will make coaches aware of how they can assess an athlete s physical competence. Ensuring Maximum Participation in a Training Session This presentation provides strategies for coaches to encourage the maximum participation of all participants in a training session to replicate a competitive environment.

15 About the Program (continued) Opportunities for Success and Failure Coaches need to be aware of and develop strategies that will create a balance of opportunities for success and failure within a training session. This presentation will identify how over the longer term these strategies will enable the junior athlete to progress through the sporting pathway. Implicit Versus Explicit Learning This presentation will look at how coaches can influence the daily training environment that will provide junior athletes with an appropriate mix of opportunities for self-discovery. Competition Why, How, Who, When? What competitions are appropriate to develop the physical competence and competitiveness of a junior athlete? How can coaches identify these types of competitions and what are the implications for getting this wrong? This presentation will discuss with coaches on best practice to develop athletes through appropriate stages of competition. Designing and Delivering World Class Development Opportunities in an Isolated Community Learn how to optimise skill development in junior athletes by creating a challenging and engaging environment that will see all athletes maximising participation throughout a training session. Discuss how to provide a training session with limited resources that will create opportunities for success, failure and enjoyment.
