Developing Talent and Potential Stuart Armstrong Development Manager Talent and Potential England Golf
England Golf is looking to adopt the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model of talent development If accepted, Long Term Athlete Development will form the spine of the England Golf Vision to 2020
LTAD It does not matter how much money and expertise is available to elite programmes, athletes will never reach optimal training and performance levels due to the shortcomings of the delivery system for younger athletes. Dr Istvan Balyi
LTAD Background Evolution of Athlete Development Models Work of Istvan Balyi, Cote and others Inclusive all people, all levels LTAD is not a new concept Built upon consensus of scientific research Reflects applied knowledge & experience of coaches from around the world Packages complex phases of child/adult development into a simple & flexible model
Training to Win stage Boys: 18+ years - Girls: 17+ years Recreation Mastery of playing skills Training to Compete stage Boys: years - Girls: years Refinement of sport-specific skills Training to Train stage Boys: years - Girls: years Recreation Coaching Administration Retirement Other sports Develop sport skills + build the machine Learning to Train stage Boys: 9 12 years - Girls: 8 11 years Overall athletic skills + Introduction to golf skills FUNdamental stage Boys: 6-9 years - Girls: 6 8 years Fun and Participation Development of physical literacy
The Key Factors of Developing talent through the LTAD Model
A win win scenario LTAD is not an initiative but rather a philosophy which works from Playground to Professional. LTAD seeks to enable people to achieve their potential. It is about player retention as well as performance development An effective LTAD programme will support players, coaches, volunteers, officials, clubs, counties, etc etc
A Player Centred Approach Training programmes Selection policies Coaching delivery and methods Practice schedules Competition structures Are these set to suit those who administer them rather than those who participate?
Research on Players Experiences. Lack of structured programme of proper coaching contributing to difficulties later on. Lucky Few. Talent spotted early given extra support. Playing in everything, everywhere. Pinball Effect - County coaching v club coaching v regional coaching v national What do I do now no clear player pathway
The Developmental Environment Athletes can only develop as long as the environment encourages it Talent should be seen as something which requires nurturing All elements affecting the developing player should be working harmoniously for talent to develop effectively
OVER TRAINING AMOUNT TYPE TRAINING METHOD DELIVERY / KNOWLEDGE COACH PERSONALITY AVAILABILITY HEALTH PHYSICAL SYSTEM INJURY PLAYER CLUB / GOVERNING BODY STRUCTURE RECOVERY REST SUPPORT SOCIAL SLEEP REPAIR COMPETITION SCHOOL PARENTS PROXIMITY TYPE AMOUNT FRIENDS
The 10,000 hour rule 10,000 hours of deliberate practice required to reach excellence (Ericsson, 1993) Research has suggested that players experiences throughout their early careers involves over playing and competing with little time programmed to practice and prepare for competition.
Physical Literacy The physical competence to do the technical stuff and the technical competence to do the tactical stuff in that order!! The building blocks of athletic movement
Developing Physical Literacy How do we develop physical literacy? (FMS + FSS) Fundamental Sports Skills (FSS) (Running, Jumping, Throwing, Catching, Kicking, Hitting, etc) Well resourced historically Modified games rules, skills, drills, tactical elements predominate coach education / resources. Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) Our greatest weakness. The unique relationship between Strength, Balance, Coordination and Stability along the entire kinetic chain. Function before force
