Texas Seminar of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts Syllabus Ignorance is certainly never a recommendation, but often the best knowledge is not enough either. Therefore I say to the psychotherapist: let no day pass without humbly remembering that everything has still to be learned. C. G. Jung, CW 16, par. 464

Faculty: Joe Wakefield, MD Locations: Austin: 4131 Spicewood Springs Road, Ste K-8 (Carolyn Bates office) Wimberly: Jim Shultz s Ranch Time: Fridays, 2-6pm Dates: *September 12, October 2, November 6, December 4, January 8, February 5, March 4, April 1, May 6 (see master schedule for locations) *September only, seminar will be held on Saturday, 12-4pm The four hours of teaching with me will be divided into two parts. The first two hours will be a case conference with presentations rotating between students. The second two hours will be didactic. Emphasis in the case conference will be on the intersubjective experience of doing psychotherapy/analysis. Though diagnosis and treatment formulations will be made, the main focus will be on the actual experience of doing therapy. The intent is both to deepen ability to do therapy/analysis and to develop trust, respect and empathy for each other as therapists. This will not be a therapy group nor a "T" (process) group, but honest sharing will be encouraged. The didactic portion will examine the origins of analytical psychology. We'll start by looking at the life and times of Carl Jung. From there we may go a variety of directions and could go quite deep into Jung's developmental history, current neurodevelopmental research including brain hemispheric lateralization, the conflict between Enlightenment and Romantic approaches to experience, Jung's method of therapy versus psychoanalysis, active imagination and amplification versus free association, Jung's Red Book, and the subsequent splits among analytical psychology training of developmental/psychoanalytic versus archetypal "schools". What we in fact do will depend a lot upon the participants' interests since I plan to rotate the opportunity to begin the discussion among different students each month. Reading for the didactic portion is divided into 1) material to read prior to the first session, 2) material to read during the year, and 3) references should you wish to go deeper than the assigned reading. 1) Prior to the first session: "Carl Gustav Jung and Analytical Psychology" in Ellenberger, Henri, THE DISCOVERY OF THE UNCONSCIOUS, Basic Books Inc., New York, 1970, pages Jung, C.G., "Two Essays on Analytical Psychology', in CW, vol 7, Princeton Univ Press, 1966, pp

Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche Faculty: Mary Burke, LCSW Location: Jim Shultz s Ranch, Wimberly, Texas Friday afternoon seminar will be in the Gatehouse, not the Library Phone: mbb51@sbcglobal.net Time/Dates: 2-6pm, Friday, September 11; 9-11am, Saturday, September 12 Life is an energy process CW8, 798 In this seminar we will explore the nature of psyche as Jung understood it, i.e., from the point of view of energy, how it moves and forms, and its effect on human life. Other than the readings, please prepare brief notes (or an outline, diagram, schema - anything that feels useful to you) of the primary structures and dynamics Jung describes. This will not be handed in; the exercise is intended to provide you with a general framework and orientation to this complex and extensive material that makes sense to you. Please bring this with you and use it as a reference point for discussion. And, always, bring your questions! Required Reading: The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche, CW8 On Psychic Energy, (pp. 3-68) The Transcendent Function, (pp ) A Review of the Complex Theory, (pp ) Instinct and the Unconscious, (pp ) The Structure of the Psyche, (pp ) On the Nature of the Psyche, (pp ) Aion: researches into the phenomenology of the Self, CW9ii The Ego, 1-12; The Shadow, 13-19; The Syzygy: Anima and Animus 20-42, The Self, (in total, pp. 1-35) Two Essays on Analytical Psychology, CW7 This volume is already assigned by Joe Wakefield. You will find much it useful for this seminar as well. The Way - (Movie) Please watch this film and think of it like a dream, or an expression of the psyche of one individual (Tom). We ll use it to illustrate some of the concepts related to our topic. 6

Complex Theory and Neurosis Faculty: Michelle Halsall, MA, MDiv Location: 3724 Jefferson, Ste. 207 Austin, Texas Phone: (Please, no texts) Time/Date: 9-4pm, Saturday, October 3 We should not try to get rid of a neurosis, but rather to experience what it means, what it has to teach, what it s purpose is. We should even learn to be thankful for it, otherwise we pass it by and miss the opportunity of getting to know ourselves as we really are. A neurosis is truly removed only when it has removed the false attitude of the ego. We do not cure it it cures us.and what the neurotic flings away as absolutely worthless contains the gold we should have never found elsewhere. (CW 10, pp 361) At the heart of the neurosis is the Complex. In this seminar we will discuss the dynamics of how the complex forms, it s archetypal core, it s neurotic expression, and our understanding of the complex. Assignment: Please read all of the readings. Each student is asked to watch 3 films and present a report on one of the films they watched. The report should focus on the development of the complex and how it manifests in the various characters life. Particular attention should be paid to how the reading material on the development and manifestations of the complex underline and highlight the characters development in the film. Please get together with your fellow seminar members to decide who will present which film so that all of the films are covered. I will assign you films if you prefer. You may choose to write your reports or not. My main interest is in your ability to use the reading material in your reflections about the film characters and how this in turn reflects your understanding of the complex and its development.. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. 8

Psychological Types and Functioning Faculty: Mary Ley, MA, MEd Location: 404 West Monroe Austin, Texas Phone: Time/Date: 9-4pm, Saturday, November 7 "This work sprang originally from my need to define the ways in which my outlook differed from Freud's and Adler's. In attempting to answer this question, I came across the problem of types: for it is one's psychological type which from the outset determines and limits a person's judgment...the relationship of the individual to the world, to people and things." (C. G. Jung) "When I am alone I can become invisible. I can sit on the top of a dune as motionless as an uprise of weeds, until the foxes run by unconcerned. I can hear the almost unhearable sound of the roses singing." (Mary Oliver) "When I took office, only high energy physicists had ever heard of what is called the Worldwide Web...Now even my cat has its own page." (President Bill Clinton) "Being led by Barack Obama is like being trumpeted into battle by Miles Davis. He makes you want to sit down and discern." (David Brooks) "I want to put a ding in the universe." (Steve Jobs) Seminar participants are asked to prepare by doing the following: 1) Read, and be prepared to discuss, "The Collected Works, Psychological Types, Volume 6": Pages: ) Be prepared to make a brief (15-20 minute) informal presentation to our group on your understanding of any aspect of Jung's theory of psychological types that is interesting to you by using appropriate text or visual material from poetry, fiction, art, etc. Please note that parking near Mary's home is limited, and you can park a block to the east on Monroe, where on street parking is allowed, or, if that is already taken, ask Mary for the loan of a visitor parking permit to hang on your rear view mirror for parking on street in the block where her home is located. There will be an hour break for lunch, and it is an easy walk to a variety of restaurants nearby. 10

Infancy and Individuation: Symbol Formation Faculty: Cheryl Tunnell, MS Location: Jim Shultz s Ranch, Wimberly, Texas Time/Dates: 9am-4pm, Saturday, December 5 How is it then, you may ask, with the most ordinary everyday events, with immediate realities like husband, wife, father, mother, child? These ordinary everyday facts, which are eternally repeated, create the mightiest archetypes of all, whose ceaseless activity is everywhere apparent even in a rationalistic age like ours. Jung, 1927 Greetings Stacy and Byron! I am looking forward to meeting with all of you at the ranch in Wimberley for the seminar on Saturday, December 5 th. The topic for the seminar is Infancy and Individuation: Symbol Formation, a pretty broad subject to cover in the time we have allocated to us! I have in mind doing a quick overview of a few of the main relevant theories of infant development, and then moving to a brief look at some of Jung s writings on the subject, and then moving to more recent Jungian thought and theory. In order to give a basic foundation for our discussion, there are 3 readings: a Jung essay, a paper by Brian Feldman (an IRSJA analyst) and a couple of sections from a book by Mario Jacoby, a highly respected Jungian analyst. I will attach the Feldman paper, and the Jacoby book is available on Amazon. Additionally, I ask that you each write an informal reflection paper about how the readings affected you. It can be about something stirred up in you while preparing for this seminar. It can be personal, or something connected to your work with a patient, whatever seems relevant. This is not to turn in, and only need be a few pages. My intent is to use these writings as a jumping off point for our discussion, and I will ask each of you to share it verbally with the group. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to spending time with all of you in December. Warm regards, Cheryl Tunnell Readings: 1) Psychic Conflicts in a Child, C.G. Jung, CW 17 (including forwards) 2) Jungian Psychotherapy & Contemporary Infant Research, M. Jacoby (Parts 1 & 2) 3) Jung s Infancy and Childhood and its Influence upon the Development of Analytical Psychology, Brian Feldman - Journal of Analytical Psychology (attached) 11

Individuation Across the Life Span Faculty: Marga Speicher, PhD, LCSW Location: Jim Shultz s Ranch, Wimberly, Texas Time/Dates: 9am-4pm, Saturday, January 9 In the seminar Individuation across the Life Span, we will explore several areas: Jung s concept of individuation, its elaboration in Jung s work and in Jungian thinking Relation between individuation and personality development: differences and similarities Key issues in the life span (developmental phases, transitions, crisis points, etc) and the process of individuation We will explore essential features in this vast area of psychological life. Holding in mind personal and archetypal dimensions, we will seek (a) fuller awareness of the experience of development, life span issues, individuation; (b) theoretical-conceptual understanding; (c) clinical integration. As you read, please note where the material presented illuminates your experience of personal process or of work with an analysand. Especially, note where you have questions, conceptual or experiential disagreements with the points of view expressed. Please bring such questions and comments to the seminar. For each of you, different sections of the material will evoke interest or carry meaning. Articulate for yourself your area of interest, think about it in the context of development-individuation, personal & clinical relevance. Assignments: (1) Prepare a short presentation (less than ten minutes) related to your area of interest: discuss the area & nature of the interest; your thinking; aspects of development-individuation; personal and/or clinical relevance. (2) After the Seminar, write a short summary of what hit you in discussions & what you especially take with you into life and practice. Details about this assignment will be discussed in the Seminar. (3) Readings marked with an asterisk (*) are required. They provide basic understanding; read from the optional readings as much as you can. Relevant readings throughout Jung s and Jungian analysts writing are too numerous to list here. Read as much as you can out of what interests you. C.G. 14 Word Association Experiment, Part 1 Faculty: Wynette Barton, MA, LPC, DMin Location: Ronald McDonald Meeting Room 1315 Barbara Jordan Blvd Austin, Texas Time/Date: 9am-4pm, Saturday, February 6 The Word Association Experiment will be covered in two seminars. In the first one we ll examine the AE, the theory involved, testing procedure, the test form, and the way complexes exhibit themselves through word associations. Administering a mock AE test to the key figure in The Words to Say It (by role play) will give an idea of how associations in a complex might exhibit themselves in the testing setting. This mock test will also show how responses are tallied, grouped and evaluated by the examiner. In the month between the two seminars, you will administer at least two (and preferable more) AE tests, evaluate them, and write a test report on two of them. Don t expect to do this perfectly the first times, or the first few times. You will be using the subject s verbal and non-verbal responses as well as you understanding of complex theory in these evaluations, so you must hold many things in your mind at the same time in the administering, scoring, evaluating and report writing. Ordinarily the report need not be longer than two pages. We will discuss points to be covered in the written report in the first seminar. In the second seminar we will go over your tests and reports to look for what might have been missed and try to fine tune your skills in catching the signals of a complex as shown on this test. The AE can be valuable as an evaluation tool, but it takes time to learn to administer and evaluate it correctly. It can be equally valuable in honing observation skills and recognizing the extent to which a complex can disturb thinking and responses; so even if you don t use it often in your practice, it is a good thing to understand. (An added benefit to learning its intricacies is that it is likely to come up during Propaedeuticum exams.) ASSIGNMENTS for the First Seminar (Feb.6): (1) Read The Words to Say It, by Marie Cardinal. (Available through Amazon.com.) This book is the story of ups, downs, misgivings, frustrations, rages and revelations experienced as a woman uncovers past memories and feelings through her analysis. It is neither a technical treatise nor a professional guide, but it is quite good in its portrayal of the struggle to make the unconscious conscious, told from the client s point of view. Familiarity with the case it presents will be necessary for our seminar s discussion and demonstrations, (plus there s a good chance you ll truly enjoy reading this book). (2) Collected Works, Volume 2 (Section I, Experimental Research) Most of this volume is concerned specifically with the Association Experiment as a way to identify and understand the feeling toned complex. Skip the text discussing experimental design. Pay attention to the discussion of administration and evaluation of the AE and what constitutes a 14

normal and a disturbed response. An analysis of the Associations of an Epileptic (para ) and Reaction-Time Ratio in the AE (para ) may be particularly helpful. The Psychological Diagnosis of Evidence (para ) is the core. Skim other parts of Section One, reading what is helpful to you, and don t bother with Section II ( Psychophysical Researches ) unless it particularly interests you. (3) Make copies of the Association Experiment, one to bring to the first and second seminars; one to keep for your files; two or more to use when you administer this test to your subjects. Copies of the test form will be sent to you by . Supplemental Reading: Jolande Jocobi, Complex, Archetype, and Symbol (Bollingen Series, Princeton U Press) This basic text about Jung s concepts is somewhat oversimplified in places due to its relative brevity; and because of its original publication date (1957), it does not contain the latest research or thinking about Analytic Psychology. Nevertheless it remains a classic that is still often quoted, and it may be helpful in learning to track and map connections demonstrated in the Word Association Experiment. It will be good for you to be familiar with its concepts, written by one of the early analysts trained by Dr. Jung. 15

Word Association Experiment, Part 2 Faculty: Wynette Barton, MA, LPC, DMin Location: Ronald McDonald Meeting Room 1315 Barbara Jordan Blvd Austin, Texas Time/Date: 9am-4pm, Saturday, March 5 ASSIGNMENT for the Second Seminar: The best way of tracing the intricacies of verbal images and associations is to give the Association Experiment, and then to track associational pathways revealed in this test by mapping disturbed responses. This requires concentration and recognition of similar responses. This may seem difficult at first, but practice will bring these together fairly quickly. Enlist at least 2 people (friends, family members, acquaintances) to help you by giving their associations to words. Tell them you are learning to give this test, so the results cannot be considered valid, and that it will take about two hours to complete the test. It might be done in less time, but on your first trials, expect two hours, at least. Do NOT choose anyone you believe to have a serious psychological disturbance as your experimental subject. (If this happens, so be it, but the test is likely to take much longer and may activate complexes that are better left alone unless this person is in treatment with you or someone.) Basic instructions for administering the AE are in CW 2 as part of the assignment for February. More complete instructions will be given at the February seminar. A summary of findings should be written for each of two tests given. Instructions for writing this report will be covered in the February seminar. 16

Introduction to Alchemy Faculty: Susan Negley, MA, LPC Location: Ronald McDonald Meeting Room 1315 Barbara Jordan Blvd Austin, Texas Time/Date: 9am-4pm, Saturday, April 2 Before I discovered alchemy, I had a series of dreams which repeatedly dealt with the same theme The unknown wing of the house was a part of my personality, an aspect of myself; it represented something that belonged to me but of which I was not yet conscious. It referred to alchemy, of which I was ignorant, but which I was soon to study. Some fifteen years later I had assembled a library very like the one in the dream. Carl Jung (Memories, Dreams, and Reflections) We all have to start somewhere! Required reading: 1. Memories, Dreams Reflections, Chap. 6 and 7 2. Commentary on The Secret of the Golden Flower, CW Vol 13, Alchemical Studies; pp Basic Concepts of Alchemy, CW Vol 12, Psychology and Alchemy Part. 3; pp The Psychic Nature of the Alchemical Work, CW Vol 12, Part. 3; pp Supplemental Reading: Von Franz: Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and the Psychology Assignment: Please be prepared to lead a discussion on any aspect of the material that is of particular interest to you. Feel free to be as creative as you like in your discussion. This is an opportunity to reflect on the myth of transformation in your work with analysands as well as your own individuation process. 17

Developing a Clinical Perspective on Dreams Faculty: Nancy Dougherty, LCSW Location: Jim Shultz s Ranch, Wimberly Texas Time/Date: 9am-4pm, Saturday, May 7 The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul, opening into the cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness and which will remain psyche no matter how far our ego-consciousness extends. Carl Jung (CW 10: Civilization in Transition. "The Meaning of Psychology for Modern Man," n. 304) Dreams offer an unparalleled revelation of the unconscious processes. In our dream life, each aspect of our personality takes the stage that arises with sleep. Our better sides as well as our shadowy aspects, our hopes and our fears, our complexes and our undiscovered potentials, all strive to communicate their natures and purposes. In this seminar, we will focus on developing a clinical approach to dreams. As time allows, we will integrate the exploration of dream theory with hands-on dream interpretation and amplification. How dreams relate to the structure of the psyche and individuation, the symbolic language of dreams, problems with dream recall, recurring dreams, initial dreams, childhood dreams, nightmares, and dream series will be considered. Required Reading: Hall, James. (1983) Jungian Dream Interpretation: A Handbook of Theory and Practice. Inner City Books. Jung, C.G., (1916). "General Aspects of Dream Psychology," CW8 The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche. Jung, C.G., (1945). "On the Nature of Dreams," CW 8: The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche. 18
