1 University of Iowa College of Dentistry Issue June, 2012 DSB WEEKLY Christine White, Editor Dr. Howard Cowen and Ms. Penni Ryan Receive a Grant Dr. Rick Walton Receives IB Bender Lifetime Educator Award Participants Attend Training Program UI President Sally Mason s Visit to the COD (Part 2) Recent Publications Filing Station Menu Dr. Howard Cowen and Ms. Penni Ryan Receive Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Grant Dr. Howard Cowen, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, and Ms. Penni Ryan, director of continuing education and alumni relations, have received a Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Grant for $10,000 for their program, Elderly and Special Needs Patient Oral Health Care Training and Education. The grant funds will be used for program development (10 modules); videotaping; editing of modules; travel to nursing homes for videotaping; rental of required lighting; and reduction in cost of registration fees for CE participants. Dr. Cowen and Ms. Ryan are co-principal investigators on the grant. Bender Lifetime Educator Award. The award honors an AAE member whose contributions to endodontics in the field of education have demonstrated selfless commitment to full-time educational pursuits, and whose valuable contributions have instilled in students the desire to pursue excellence in their careers. 3 Page 3 Participants Attend ADA Evidence Reviewer Training Program at the College of Dentistry A group of participants attended a two-day training workshop to gain skills in critically appraising systematic reviews and writing critical summaries. The program provided participants an opportunity to expand their critical thinking skills and become involved with the American Dental Association (ADA) Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry. Critical summaries will be published on the ADA website ( and a subset will also be published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). Dr. John Hellstein suggested bringing the program to the College of Dentistry. The compositions can include crystal phases including roedderite and/or potassium fluorrichterite. The glass-ceramic compositions are bioactive and can be used as components of a wide variety of biomedical devices such as dental restorations. Richard Barwacz and His Daughter Attend Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards (Left): Richard Barwacz, program coordinator for the Office of Clinical Research, attended the 2012 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards with his daughter, Sarah, who is a reporter for WZZM in Grand Rapids, Michigan. (Sarah s brother is Dr. Christopher Barwacz, assistant professor, Dows and Department of Prosthodontics.) Although Sarah has only worked at WZZM for two years, she was nominated for and received an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATS) for best reporter. The awards ceremony was held in Detroit, Michigan, at the Motor City Sound Board Theatre on May 16, 2012.

Coming soon to a department near you: sort-free recycling presentations to make your lives easier and greener! Informational sessions about sort-free recycling were recently held in the Departments of Prosthodontics and Ed Media. To schedule a sort-free recycling information session for your department, please contact Nancy Slach or Maggie Hogan. The sessions can be held over lunch hour or during the day and should take 1 minutes. Herky Tumblers The Filling Station has received a new shipment due to popular demand. Melanie Forbes reports that nearly 100 have sold here at the college in the few short weeks they have been for sale. Many have been purchased by students. Way to be green, DSB!
