TRIGEMINAL NERVE INJURIES ETIOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS, AND MANAGEMENT This program will review current concepts in the causes, evaluation, and treatment of trigeminal nerve injuries encountered in the

3 Continuing Education Program Alumni Weekend Presented! by the Classes of 191 ad 2009 REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES CLINICAL CONCEPTS This presentation provides a review of the traditional clinical concepts for the design and fabrication of RPDs. Although classic theories and rules of engagement for RPD designs will be presented and should be followed, excellent clinical care for partially edentulous patients may also be achieved with CAD/CAM technology and unique blended designs. These nontraditional RPD designs and fabrication methods provide for improved fit, function, and esthetics by using CAD software, composite resin for contours and morphology of abutment teeth, metal support structures for long edentulous spans and collapsed occlusal vertical dimensions, and flexible nylon thermoplastic material for metal-supported clasp assemblies. David Bohnenkamp, D.D.S., M.S., F.A.C.P., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, College of Dentistry. Dr. Bohnenkamp received his D.D.S. in 1979 from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and his M.S. in Prosthodontics in 1987 from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Graduate Schools of Biomedical Sciences and joined the Department of Prosthodontics at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry in September Prior to coming to Iowa, Dr. Bohnenkamp was an associate professor in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry and served as the Director of the International Dentist Education Program from at the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School in San Antonio. TRIGEMINAL NERVE INJURIES ETIOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS, AND MANAGEMENT This program will review current concepts in the causes, evaluation, and treatment of trigeminal nerve injuries encountered in the practice of dentistry. It will review important concepts for preventing and evaluating injuries to the trigeminal nerve that can be performed by the general practitioner. A timeline for specialist referral, as well as possible surgical and non-surgical treatments of trigeminal nerve injuries will be discussed. Kyle Stein, D.D.S., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dentistry and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Stein received his DDS degree in 2009 and his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certificate in 2013 from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Stein joined the faculty at the College of Dentistry in He practices full scope oral and maxillofacial surgery including dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant surgery, hard and soft tissue grafting, orthognathic surgery, pathology, reconstruction, facial trauma, and microsurgical nerve repair. PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY OUTSIDE THE BOX The majority of carious lesions in Pediatric Dental patients can be successfully managed with conventional treatment. However, certain challenges remain that can frustrate the patient, provider and parent. This program will present additional approaches to managing caries that fall outside the box of conventional pediatric dentistry. Topics to be covered include Atraumatic Restorative Treatment, the Hall technique for stainless steel crown placement, and the medical management of caries using Silver Nitrate. Michael Kanellis, D.D.S., M.S., is a Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the Associate Dean Patient Care at the College of Dentistry. Dr. Kanellis received his D.D.S. degree in 1979 and his M.S. degree in Pediatric Dentistry in 1982 and his M.S. degree in Dental Public Health in At the completion of the entire program, participants should be able to: Understand the rationale and indications for the treatment of partially edentulous patients with removable partial dentures, Review the different theories, classic design principles, and modern fabrication techniques for removable partial dentures, Evaluate different ways to successfully manage challenging clinical patient scenarios with removable partial dentures, Identify situations in which the potential for trigeminal nerve injury is increased, Identify keys to diagnosing trigeminal nerve injury and initial management principles, Identify the proper timeline for referral to a specialist for treatment, Understand the possible treatments available for trigeminal nerve injuries, Learn how to adapt atraumatic restorative treatment to caries management in the primary dentition, Be familiar with the Hall technique for stainless steel crown placement, and Understand the rationale and protocol for managing caries in primary teeth using silver nitrate and fluoride varnish. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT/RECORD KEEPING: CEU verification will be provided (by following the program) only for those individuals completing/submitting a CEU card at the completion of the program. Credit will be appropriately adjusted for those individuals who do not attend the entire program. All attendees are encouraged to submit the CEU card which will generate a letter documenting attendance at the program. REUNION ACTIVITIES: A special invitation is extended to members of reunion classes. Efforts will be made to help class members sit together during the dinner and football game. Members of these classes should register early and BE SURE TO SPECIFY CLASS YEAR ON APPLICATION. All of our group planning depends on knowing who will attend from each class! If you do not state your year, seating with your class cannot be guaranteed. DINNER: The Alumni Weekend will feature a no-host social hour and dinner at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center at I-80 and First Avenue (Exit 242), Coralville. Reunion classes and honorees will be seated at specially-marked tables. Presentations will be made to the honored Dental Alumnus of the Year, Distinguished Educator of the Year, Service Recognition of the Year, and Honorary Recognition of the Year. The cost is $60 per person. FOOTBALL TICKETS: Tickets for Iowa vs. Northwestern on 11/1 ($65 each plus a $1 per ticket handling fee) are available on a very limited basis (limit 2 tickets per registration). Ticket requests will be filled until supply is exhausted. To order tickets, you must register and prepay for the continuing education program. Tickets will not be mailed. Payment for tickets cannot be refunded except when ticket supply is exhausted during the preregistration period. Tickets cannot be transferred with a registration to another course. PARKING: Parking is included with the course registration. HOUSING: A block of rooms has been reserved for Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (October 30, 31, and November 1) at the local hotels listed below. Reservations must be made by September 15. It is the responsibility of registrants to reserve their own lodging. When making your reservations, please indicate that you are attending the College of Dentistry s Dental Alumni Weekend. In order to serve as many alumni as possible, reservations will be limited to one room per person.
