3 The Scope of the Problem: Medical Students Recent review of the prevalence of depression in medical students in JAMA, Included 167 cross-sectional studies (N=116,628) and 16 longitudinal studies (N=5,728) from 43 countries Depression was estimated to be 2 to 5 X higher in medical students than similarly aged individuals in the general population Prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among medical students was 27.2% Prevalence of suicidal ideation was 11.1% Reported as having occurred over the past 2 weeks to 12 months 1. Rotenstein LS, et al. JAMA. 2016;316(21): JAMA Journal of American Medical Association
4 The Scope of the Problem: Residents A 2014 publication conducted an online survey of residents and fellows across the nation and found: 51% screened positive for depression 1 8% had suicidal ideation in a 12 month period 1 Another study mailed the Maslach Burnout Inventory to residents in eight different medical specialties and found: Overall, 50% of residents met burnout criteria, ranging from 27% (family practice) to 75% (obstetrics/gynecology) across specialties 2 1. Dyrbye LN, et. al. Acad Med. 2014;89(3): Martini S, et al. Academic Psychiatry. 2004;28:
5 The Scope of the Problem: Practicing Physicians Physicians receive little training in recognizing depression in themselves 1 Each year in the US, physicians take their own lives Roughly equal to the number of students in 3 medical school graduating classes 1 Online survey assessing work satisfaction/burnout in US physicians (n=6,880) found: 2 Satisfaction with work-life balance declined (48.5% vs. 40.9%, p<0.001) and burnout increased between 2011 and 2014 In contrast to physicians, slightly favorable increases in satisfaction with work-life balance and no changes in burnout were observed between 2011 and 2014 in other working US adults US United States 1. Rubin R. JAMA. 2014;312(17): Shanafelt TD, et.al. Mayo Clin Proc. 2015; 90(12):
