The Maslach Burnout Inventory Emotional exhaustion: Measures feelings of being emotionally overextended and exhausted by one s work Depersonalization: Measures an unfeeling and impersonal response toward recipients of one s service, care treatment, or instruction Personal accomplishment: Measures feelings of competence and successful achievement in one s work.
JAMA Internal Medicine PHYSICIAN BURNOUT 7, % Physicians from various healthcare settings were surveyed. 45.8% reported experiencing at least one symptom of professional burnout 37.9% reported high levels of emotional exhaustion. Comparison to 3,442 working adults physicians were more likely to have symptoms of burnout (37.9% vs 27.8%) and to be dissatisfied with work-life balance (40.2% vs 23.2%) (P <.001 for both) 29.4% reported that cynicism was an issue. 12.4% reported having a low sense of personal accomplishment Other Notable Findings: Physicians between the ages of 46 and 55 reported the highest burnout rate (32%), with the lowest rates in the under-35 and over-65 physician age groups (less than 10% each). Arch Intern Med. 2012;172(18):

Physicians work an average of 53 hours a week, virtually the identical number of hours they reported working in 2012, but down from 57 hours in Physicians spend 20% of their time on non-clinical paperwork. Physicians are not uniform in their perspectives. Younger physicians, female physicians, employed physicians and primary care physicians are somewhat more positive.
A Survey of America s Physicians The Physicians Foundation 2014 What is the most satisfying aspect of medical practice? No. 1 answer: Relationships with patients
Medscape, 2015 MALE vs. FEMALE PHYSICIANS BURNOUT FEMALE PHYSICIANS Physicians from various healthcare settings were surveyed. 14 Non Engagement = Stress and Productivity Impairment Impatience, uncooperativeness, defensiveness, hyper criticality and pessimism. What does this look like? All these emotions negatively affect teams and decrease individual and collective ability to perform.
Acute vs. Chronic Stress
IMPORTANCE OF THE Return to Baseline Sustained Cortisol Impairs Feedback Regulation: Implications for Coping with Novel Stressors Chronic Stress impairs memory, learning, and leads to premature cognitive decline Source: Aviad Haramati, PhD
Stress and Productivity Impairment Too much stress with too little recovery (overuse) OR Too much recovery with too little stress (underuse) WILL COMPROMISE PERFORMANCE The Biology of Business Performance
Professional vs. Physician Athletes Professional Athlete Physician Athlete Training 90% 10% Hours Worked 4-6/day 8-12/day Career Span 7-10 years 30+ years The Biology of Business Performance
PERIODIZATION: The road to a high performance level Main objective: reach a high level of performance at a given time, usually the main competition of the year through good athletic shape. Good athletic shape occurs when the degree of training is high and the psychological status enhances a high level of performance. Periodization is a sports medicine principle that states that athletes require training to be interrupted with physiological, psychological, and CNS rest and regeneration before beginning another training cycle.
The Biology of Business Performance STRESS can be positive
The Biology of Business Performance
Recovery is Not Negotiable Positive Outputs are Still Outputs Relaxation Techniques Examples Deep Breathing Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) Mindfulness Visualization/Guided Imagery Yoga/Tai Chi Rhythmic Exercises
The Mind-Body connection YOU can be more successful at work! The secret? MOVE SLEEP LAUGH
HERE IS YOUR BRAIN ON EXERCISE Dr. Chuck Hillman, University of Illinois
Two more of many studies Cleveland Clinic: riding a stationary bike improved symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease, with faster pedaling linked with greater positive effect in the brain. They rode a stationary bicycle three times a week, for an eight-week period Faster pedaling in the study was linked with experiencing greater connectivity in the motor cortex and thalamus and this led to improved motor control. Study researcher Jay L. Alberts, Ph.D.,. September, 2014, The Journal of Pediatrics published research that found kids who took part in a regular physical activity program showed important enhancement of cognitive performance and brain function. The findings, according to University of Illinois professor Charles Hillman and colleagues, "demonstrate a causal effect of a physical program on executive control, and provide support for physical activity for improving childhood cognition and brain health. Earlier this month, another study found that a 12-week exercise program improved math and reading test scores in all kids, but especially in those with signs of ADHD. (Executive functioning is impaired in ADHD, and tied to performance in math and reading.) Lead researcher: Alan Smith, chair of the department of kinesiology at Michigan State.
By exercising our bodies, we reinvigorate our brains Systems level: higher attention span, ability to learn and improved memory Molecular level: synaptic plasticity, increased learning and memory capacity Cellular level: brain cell growth The Biology of Business Performance
Physical Activity of any kind Matters A single 30-minute episode of exercise improves immediate brain function A short-term program (from 2 12 weeks) improves brain function and memory beyond the duration of the exercise program A long-term program (consistent regular exercise over several months/years) promotes sustained, long-term brain function improvements
The body is business relevant The Big Picture: Investing in people s physical health is investing in your company s future The Reality: To perform at our best, we must move! *Better brain function *Less Stress *More engaged
