THE KEY TO OPTIMAL PIG NUTRITION Animal Nutrition
IMPROVING PROFITABILITY Natuphos The key to higher yields In cereals and oilseeds, up to 90% of the total phosphorus can be locked up in phytate, which is almost indigestible in pigs. For this reason, pig diets are supplemented with inorganic phosphorus sources, such as dicalcium phosphate, to meet the animal s requirements. This mineral supplementation results in additional feed costs, and the excretion of undigested phytate-bound phosphorus poses environmental problems, and particularly in regions of intensive livestock production. Natuphos, the 3-phytase from BASF, facilitates the enzymatic breakdown of phytate in the digestive tract of the pig. Dietary phosphorus and other nutrients locked up in phytate are efficiently released. Additionally, Natuphos almost completely eliminates the anti-nutritional effects of phytate that are detrimental to pig performance. Secure performance at lower costs Natuphos improves the digestibility of phosphorus and other phytatebound nutrients such as amino acids, calcium, and trace elements. As a consequence, the supplementation of pig feeds with inorganic phosphorus sources and other expensive ingredients can be reduced. By adding Natuphos to the feed, the animal s requirement for phosphorus can be met even when low phosphorus diets are fed. Performance and carcass quality are maintained at a high level. Piglets in particular also profit from the decreased buffer capacity of feeds containing Natuphos and reduced amounts of inorganic mineral sources, with better growth rates and feed conversion ratios. 2
Sustainable production When using Natuphos, a higher proportion of feed phosphorus is digested instead of being lost in the manure. Feed supplementation with inorganic phosphorus can be reduced. In this way, Natuphos can decrease phosphorus excretion by more than 30% (Fig. 1). Therefore, pig feeds with Natuphos are better for the environment and offer economic benefits: Natuphos lowers the amount of land required for manure disposal, and disposal costs are reduced when manure application is limited by phosphorus content. Fig. 1: Influence of Natuphos on phosphorus excretion in piglets without without Natuphos (FTU/kg) Natuphos * 500 1,000 Live weight (kg) Feed intake (kg) P content fed (g/kg) P intake (g/animal) P deposition (g/animal) P excretion (g/animal) relative % * Corn, soybean meal diet; 0.42 % tp; 0.62 % Ca Hoppe et al.,

As a result, nutrient equivalencies, which can be used in the least-cost formulation of pig diets, have been developed for Natuphos (Fig. 2). These matrix values are only valid for Natuphos, which was the object of the testing in the underlying experiments. Due to differences in product characteristics, such as mode of action and bio-efficacy, the equivalencies cannot be applied to other phytases. 4
Continual development for the best quality Natuphos, the 3-phytase obtained from Aspergillus niger, was the first phytase for feed on the market, and is therefore known as the original phytase. Natuphos has resulted in reliable effects and higher yields in animal nutrition for more than ten years now. A large number of laboratory and practical trials demonstrates that Natuphos can help solve environmental problems while, increaseing profitability. The manufacturing of Natuphos takes place in state-of-the-art production plants and is subject to stringent quality controls. Furthermore, BASF continuously invests in research directed at improved formulations and applications of the product to find optimal solutions for modern feed production and profitable animal nutrition. Natuphos is now available in powder, granulated, and liquid forms with different phytase concentrations to meet the individual requirements of feed manufacturers. Superior bio-efficacy As a result of intensive research and profound expertise, Natuphos displays superior bio-efficacy compared to other phytase products on the market. Feeding trials confirm that the use of Natuphos in the feed results in a maximum release of digestible phosphorus from vegetable feedstuffs per phytase unit. On average liquid Natuphos releases 1.5 times more digestible phosphorus than does the 6-phytase derived from Peniophora lycii. This means that 1.5 times more of the competitor s phytase is needed to achieve a comparable effect in the animal as in achieved with Natuphos. Due to the influence of formulation, the difference in efficiency of granulated phytase products is even more pronounced. Trials comparing granular Natuphos with granular products based on Peniophora phytase have shown that the exchange rate is 1:2. 5
OPTIMAL FEED FOR BETTER RESULTS Fig. 3: Effect of Natuphos and Formi on growth performance of piglets Additives improve performance Careful selection of feed compounds and appropriate additives is indispensable for efficient pig feeding and profitable results. To achieve maximum effects, Natuphos can be combined with other quality products from the extensive BASF animal nutrition portfolio. For example, figure 3 shows the favourable synergistic effects of Natuphos and Formi, the first approved nonantibiotic performance enhancer.
