3 Getting started Plug the CPAP in at the mains. If your CPAP has a modem fitted, press the button on the side. Do this every time you have unplugged the CPAP. (If you leave it plugged in with power you only need to do it once). Attach your tubing and mask. The machine may start automatically, but if it doesn t press the large dial on the top. If needed refit your mask so that it is quiet and you don t feel any leaks (particularly into the eyes). You have been loaned a CPAP device to treat your condition of obstructive sleep apnoea. To get the most benefit from CPAP you should use it every night for the whole time you are sleeping. If for any reason you stop using CPAP you should contact the department straight away. We will give you help and advice so that you can start using it again or make arrangements with you to return the equipment to the chest clinic so that it can be used to treat another patient. If you are having any difficulties please ring us or use the Wednesday morning drop-in clinic (9am-11.30am) rather than waiting until your next booked appointment. It is helpful to have the information on page 1 of this booklet when telephoning. Cleaning and changing your filters Masks Tubing This should be cleaned daily using washing up liquid - this will remove skin grease, dirt and any facial products such as make-up and moisturises. DO NOT USE products such as hand soap, bubble bath or baby wipes - these will ruin the seal. Bacterial wipes are fine to use once you have cleaned the mask with washing - up liquid (they will not remove dirt and grease). IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR MASK CLEAN TO PREVENT INFECTIONS. This should be cleaned weekly by running hot soapy water through it and then running clean water through to rinse. As long as there aren t any big pools of water in the tubing you can run the CPAP for a short time to dry out your tubing. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR TUBING CLEAN TO PREVENT INFECTIONS. Bacterial filters Unless you have been told you no longer need these filters, bacterial filters should be placed between the CPAP and tubing and should be changed every 2-3 weeks. DO NOT get this filter wet. If you need more filters please contact the department. 3 4

4 Ultrafine (white) allergy filters If you have air borne allergies such as hay fever or asthma you may wish to use the allergy filters. These fit behind the black sponge filter and need changing once a month. Please let us know if you need these and contact the department for replacements if you run out. Change every 2-3 weeks Pollen (black) filters These fit over the top of the ultrafine filter. They will get dusty and need regular rinsing. You will have been provided with 2 so that you always have a dry one to use. Rinse the pollen filter monthly. Fit the white filter first with the grey sponge over the top. Visiting hospital / general anaesthesia Many hospitals do not have the necessary access to the correct equipment, and unfortunately the CPAP Service is unable to provide loans to wards. Therefore if you have to visit hospital for any reason overnight please bring your CPAP machine, mask and tubing in with you. This is particularly important if you are having general anaesthesia. If you know you are having a general anaesthetic please let us knows so we can provide you with an extra attachment in case you need to have oxygen through your CPAP. Holidays / flying If you are going on holiday or away on a trip, please take your CPAP machine and equipment with you. If you are flying, you must try to avoid sleeping during the flight if at all possible unless you can use your CPAP machine. The risks to your health are greatly increased when you sleep and have breathing difficulties at altitude. If at all possible, the CPAP machine and equipment should be carried as hand-luggage to prevent it getting lost / damaged. If necessary, we are able to provide a letter of information which will help you explain this to the airline. Do not drink alcohol before or during the flight as alcohol will affect your ability to stay awake and worsen your sleep apnoea. Change monthly Rinse monthly 5 6

5 Drivers (including HGV/PSV) Conditions of loan When holding a driving licence, by law, you must inform the DVLA that you have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and that you are being treated with CPAP. There is a separate leaflet available from the DVLA. Tiredness has been shown to affect driving ability in a similar way to alcohol and you are just as prosecutable by law if it is proven that you caused an accident due to sleepiness. It is your responsibility to ensure you are fit to drive any time you get behind a wheel. Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a condition that is notifiable to the DVLA by law. Untreated, there is an increased risk of a road traffic accident. However, if you use CPAP regularly and are no longer sleepy your risk is reduced. When notifying the DVLA you should also notify your car insurer. This should not change your premium but will ensure you are fully covered. If you have a group 2 driving licence (professional driver, for example, taxi, HGV and PSV) you will need a regular review with the consultant as well as the CPAP team. Please let us know if this is applicable to you so we can coordinate the appointments on the same day. 1. You have been shown and advised how to use and maintain your CPAP (and humidifier if applicable), including regular cleaning and changing of filters. 2. You are responsible for the safe keeping of the CPAP machine and all accessories lent to you. 3. It is very important to keep any review appointments including annual reviews and bring your CPAP machine and any accessories to all appointments for the CPAP clinic. 4. If you cannot make a review appointment you must contact central booking and make an alternative appointment. If you do not attend two appointments without cancelling them with central booking the hospital trust will automatically discharge you and you will be asked to return your equipment. You will then have to be re-referred by your GP to be able to attend another appointment. 5. We ask for you to make a serious attempt at using your CPAP. If for any reason you are having difficulties, please contact us on: (leave a message if there is no answer) or use the drop-in clinic on Wednesday 9am am in the chest clinic. You do not have to wait until your next review appointment and we request you come to the drop in clinic ASAP. 6. The CPAP machine remains the property of Salford Royal. If you are no longer using your machine you must return it to us and you will be discharged from the clinic. If you do not return your machine you may be charged for its replacement at the standard rate of 500. continued next page 7 8

6 7. I consent to having my CPAP device remotely monitored and give permission for my data to be collected, processed and used to tailor my personal healthcare. 8. I also consent to my data being stored on servers of a third party host. 9. I am aware that it is my choice to receive the remote monitoring service and that I can opt out at any time without needing to give any reasons. If I opt out from this, I agree to return the modem and will continue to receive the same treatment. If I wish to opt out from the remote monitoring service, I will inform the CPAP team.
