1 Tips for following a low FODMAP diet Ladywell Building Dietetic Department / 4256 All Rights Reserved Document for issue as handout. Unique Identifier: CS41(17). Review date: September 2019
2 The low FODMAP diet consists of 3 stages: Stage 1: FODMAP restriction (4-8 weeks strict elimination to reduce symptoms) Stage 2: FODMAP reintroduction (to identify which FODMAPs you are most sensitive too) Stage 3: FODMAP personalisation (long term you only avoid foods that trigger your symptoms and return to a normal diet as soon as possible) The low FODMAP diet is only effective at reducing gut symptoms if the diet is followed correctly and strictly. Therefore it is important you spend some time familiarising yourself with the diet before starting each stage. Planning: Do not start the diet straightaway Spend a couple of weeks planning your diet Look through your food cupboards to see what you can use or need to buy Avoid starting the diet before a holiday, significant social or life event Read the diet sheets provided by the dietitian several times Focus on what you can eat Go through your diet sheet and circle low FODMAP foods you like and enjoy. This will help with meal planning Know what food are low and high FODMAP Familiarise yourself with low FODMAP serving portion sizes Be prepared and organised with your diet: Plan meals and snacks in advance Write a weekly menu Make a shopping list Take your highlighted diet sheet shopping with you Cook low FODMAP meals in batches and freeze them Have low FODMAP snacks at hand (at work, in your bag and car) 1 2
3 Reliable and useful resources: The low FODMAP diet is relatively new. There is a lot of information on the internet which maybe wrong or from out of date sources creating confusion and making it difficult to know how to follow the diet. The following are some reputable resources we would recommend. Smartphone apps: FODMAP by Food Maestro App This app is produced by Kings College dietitians in London. There is a 14 day free trial, then a small fee. It helps guide you through all the stages of the low FODMAP diet, provides portion sizes, supports your shopping including available supermarket foods, a food label scanner and access to recipes and blogs Monash University Low FODMAP diet App The low FODMAP diet was developed by the team at Monash University in Australia. This app provides similar information to the FODMAP by Food Maestro App but is based on the Australian diet so some foods are different to those available in the UK. These variations will not make a difference to the overall effectiveness of the diet.
