211 East Chicago Avenue Suite 730 Chicago, IL direct EXT fax Wanda Wondersmile Puppet Show Guidelines and Script Purpose: To promote positive oral health among children Audience and Time Frame: Preschool and Elementary Age Children; 20 minutes per show Number of volunteers: Three volunteers, if using the small puppets (one (1) person to turn on the CD player and act as the Tooth Fairy at the beginning of the presentation, and 2 who will handle 2 puppets each). Or, 5 volunteers, if using the large puppets (1 person to turn on the CD player and act as the Tooth Fairy at the beginning of the presentation, and 4 who will each handle 1 puppet). Supplies: Four (4) puppets, either small or large, a stage and a table to put the stage on it, and a CD player. The four puppets include a boy, a girl, a grandpa, and a pirate type guy and are embellished to achieve the desired effect. The boy is Benny Bad Tooth and you can put black pompoms on his teeth to make them rotten. The girl is Wanda Wondersmile and you can glue pearls on her teeth since she has pearly white teeth. The grandpa is Doctor Dan and he ll need a lab coat. The pirate type guy is Tartar Pete and you ll want to make him look mean. Supply Resources: The written script is below. A CD with the music and the puppets talking is available. You may contact the Georgia Dental Association central office at or to learn the contact information for the current Alliance of the Georgia Dental Association president, who has the CD. The puppets may be ordered from Jump N Puddles, P. O. Box 309, Cowiche, WA 98923, at Although the original puppets, that were Sesame Street characters, are no longer available, there are many puppets from which to choose as preferred for your puppet show. Optional: You can also hand out goody bags to the students. Helpful Hints: Practice in advance so each puppeteer will know when to present their puppet. It helps to tape the script on the back of the stage so you don t have to turn the pages during the show. You can present this in classrooms, or in the school s media center. Brief History of Wanda Wondersmile Puppet Show: In 1970, Pegg Callahan (Dr. William L.), a member of the Women s Auxiliary to the Northern District Dental Society in Georgia, and Dr. Jack Rousseau, a general dentist in Atlanta, wrote the script for the original Wanda Wondersmile puppet show. Pegg wrote the music and made the puppets. The seed money was donated by the Fifth District Dental Society, now the Hinman Dental Society. This was Pegg s first venture into being a puppeteer which led into a long profession. Dr. Jack Rousseau continued to be involved with the many performances throughout the state.
The puppet show was a Women s Auxiliary to the Georgia Dental Association (currently the Alliance to the GDA) project and was not given across state lines, as many auxiliaries had their own shows. Members were trained by Pegg and Jack and many dentists helped to present the shows, also. [MUSIC] WANDA WONDERSMILE PUPPET SHOW SCENE 1 of 4: Ms. Happy Tooth & Wanda Ms. Happy Tooth: Hello there! I love creeping through your mouth to ruin your tooth! With candy and sticky stuff a lot of bugs I mix. To bite, scratch and give you pain these are my tricks! I can t stand a healthy mouth one free from decay. One thing that kills me dead is Brushing Twice a Day! Three times a day! Four times a day! So, if you don t want Tartar Teeth to give your teeth a crush Stop candy and sticky stuff and Brush! Brush! Brush! HA HA HA HA! Wanda: Did you say Brush? Well Tartar Pete, that s just what I do! And, I eat breakfast and vegetables and I visit my dentist as often as he tells me to. Tartar: Curses! I can t stand to see somebody with Happy Teeth! Wanda: Well, you can just get outta here Ha, Ha, Ha! [END OF SCENE 2] SCENE 3 of 4: Bennie Bad Tooth, Tartar Pete, & Wanda Bennie: Woe is me! Oh, woe... my tooth is hurting in my jaw. When I feel my teeth I feel like a saw! I try to bite steak, but I can t chew. Oh, I got problems, what am I gonna do? Whoop de do! Whoop de do! Tartar: Hi, kid, what cha got in your bag there?
Bennie: Oh, hi, there. I have some jelly beans and lollipops and chewing gum and candy bars and toothache medicine. Tartar: Good Boy! And, I see you have rotten teeth and an ugly smile. You re my kind of boy, Bennie Bad Tooth! Bennie: Let s see now. Tooth ache medicine... Every time I eat candy, my teeth hurt so I have to use toothache medicine. Tartar: Who cares about tooth oil and an ugly smile? Let me offer you my latest sticky candy bar. Wanda: Tartar Pete, you stop that! You know you re not telling the truth and Nobody I said, Nobody wants to have teeth that hurt and look ugly! Tartar: Oh, boy! It s that loud mouth kid again with the Happy Teeth! Wanda: And, don t come back! Bennie: OOOOOOOOW! Wanda: Say, who are you? Bennie: Mmmm! Bennie Bad Tooth. Wanda: Well, Bennie Bad Tooth, looks like you have a bad case of tooth decay. Bennie: Tooth Decay? Wanda: Anybody knows all that candy and sticky stuff makes bugs which scratch and bite your teeth and that s called decay. Bennie: OOOOOOOOW! Wanda: What s the matter? Bennie: It just bit me! Wanda: Tooth Decay? Bennie: Yep, Decay! Wanda: Decay is awful. Simply awful! You ll just have to get rid of those ugly holes in your teeth. So, let s go to the dentist. Bennie: The who? Wanda: Boys and girls, who do you visit to help care for your teeth? Boys and Girls: The Dentist!
Wanda: That s right the Dentist! Bennie: Ah! I never met my dentist. Wanda: You ll like him! My Dentist and I are best of friends I like to hear him say A Beautiful smile just all depends On how you brush each day! [END OF SCENE 3] SCENE 4 of 4: Dr. Dan, Wanda, Bennie, & Tartar Pete Dr. Dan: I m busy. I m busy. Now, let me see, where is that chart. A beautiful... a beautiful... a beautiful smile just all depends on how you brush each day! [BUZZER] Dr. Dan: Was that my buzzer? Oh my, yes! A visitor! Wanda: OK, Bennie. Go on in. I ll wait right here while you see Dr. Dan the Dentist. Dr. Dan: My Goodness. I ll bet your name is Bennie. Yes! Bennie: Uh, my tooth hurts right here. Dr. Dan: Oh, dear! Open wide now so we can examine your teeth. That means I take my baby mirror and look inside your mouth. Mirror, Mirror Aha! Um, well, first, my boy, that candy must go, so throw it away. Bennie: OK Dr. Dan: And, instead of candy, you ll have to eat delicious fruits and scrumptious vegetables and brush and floss immediately after eating. Bennie: Uh, Floss? Dr. Dan: Yes, Bennie. Dental floss, that s very important. So, let s watch the Big Teeth and the Brush and Floss Game. Dr. Dan: Brush your teeth. Bennie: Brush my teeth. Dr. Dan: Now let s use Dental Floss.
Bennie: OK Dr. Dan: You ll get rid of dental plaque and prevent decay. Floss away that messy plaque; scrub all sides quite clean... Then, we ll all have happy teeth! Bennie: I see what you mean! [REPEAT SONG] Tartar: How about the big sticky candy bar, dripping with syrup? Bennie: Uh, excuse me, Dr. Dan. OK, Tartar Pete, Just Get Lost! Tartar: Bennie Boy! Bennie: Your old candy and stuff makes bugs in my teeth so no more candy for me! Tartar: Bubblegum? Bennie: No Siree! Now buzz off! Tartar: Mr. Dentist, I challenge you to a duel! Dr. Dan: Not again! Now everybody watch this! No Candy! Bennie: No Candy! Tartar: OOOH! [falls backward] Dr. Dan: Fruits and vegetables! Bennie: Fruits and vegetables! Tartar: Eeeeeeeeh! [falls backward] Dr. Dan: Dental Floss! Bennie: Dental Floss! Dr. Dan: Visit your dentist! Bennie: Visit your dentist! Tartar: Oouch! Bennie: Dr. Dan, allow me!
Dr. Dan: Beautiful, Good Brushing! Bennie: Good Brushing! Tartar: The Brush! The Brush! [crash, Tartar Pete falls off stage] Wanda: And, Good Riddance! Dr. Dan: You see, Boys and Girls, good care wins every time, but we need your help, too. If Bennie had brushed and flossed his teeth after meals and snacks the way you must do, his teeth wouldn t be in trouble. Now we re going to get Bennie fixed up! Wanda: And, he ll be Handsome, too! Bennie: Me? Handsome? Aw shucks. What have you done for your smile lately? How s your big ole grin? Join our crowd and laugh out loud A smile is your best friend! If your smile is not quite right, let us make this clear Brush your teeth with all your might and see your dentist twice a year! My dentist and I are best of friends I like to hear him say A beautiful smile just all depends on how you brush each day! So, if you don t want Tartar Pete to give your teeth a Crush, Stop Candy and Sticky Stuff and Brush! Brush! Brush! We re so glad you can smile lately. Get a big ole grin! Join our crowd and laugh out loud! A Smile is your Best Friend! [THE END MORE MUSIC & TAKE A BOW]
