During the question and answer interview, Dr. Lanzel talks about why she chose to pursue dentistry and why she became interested in oral pathology. Dr. Lanzel s interview, Specialty Pathway: Oral Pathology can be found in the August 21, 2017 issue of ADA News, v.48(15), page 2. Dr. Matthew Oishi Receives a One-Year, $14,960 Grant from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Dr. Matthew Oishi, a dental public health resident, has received a one-year, $14,960 grant from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. The grant will support his research, National Survey of Oral Health Programs and Services at Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. Dr. Oishi s project began during his MPH work at the University of Pennsylvania where he established a baseline oral health assessment of participants at a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). This program offers community-based long-term care for nursing-home-eligible persons who have Medicare or Medicaid, both, or who pay out of pocket. All PACE participants must meet their state nursing home admission requirements and also have significant functional Activities of Daily Living (ADL) problems and/or chronic disease problems. PACE is a capitated model of nursing care that coordinates and provides enrollees with all of the necessary health and social services, including the delivery for dental care, for maintaining independent living in the community. The purpose of his study is to describe the current state of dental programs and oral health prevention programs and policies at PACE programs across the U.S. Dr. Oishi is primary investigator for the project. Other investigators (to be determined) will be from the College of Dentistry, Public Policy Center and the University of Pennsylvania Schools of Dental Medicine and Nursing. Dr. Leo Marchini, Preventive & Community Dentistry, is Dr. Oishi s thesis chair.

2 Dr. Rick Williamson Volunteers for a Weeklong Somos Amigos Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic Page 2 Dr. Rick Williamson, Department of Prosthodontics, recently volunteered on a Somos Amigos weeklong mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Somos Amigos began their trips in There are approximately volunteers on each mission trip who consist of physicians, dentists, nurses, hygienists, dental technicians, and several other people who provide assistance with interpreting, lab work, pharmacy services, records maintenance, etc. Typically, the medical and dental clinics treat about 900 patients. The usual schedule is 8 am to 7 pm, Monday through Wednesday, and then 8 am to noon on Thursday. Volunteers normally are available at the clinic three times a year, which provides a continuity of care to the local patients. For additional information about becoming a volunteer for Somos Amigos, go to somosamigos.org/. Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff: Ms. Chris White has retired as of September 5, 2017, and we are trying to replace her. However, as with all highly skilled people, we can never replace them; we only hope to find a substitute. During the interim period between Ms. White s retirement and the start date of her successor, both Chris White and Jenni Peak (Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research) will be producing the DSB Weekly. If you have news/photos you would like to submit to the DSB Weekly, please send them to both Jenni (jenniferpeak@uiowa.edu) and Chris (chris-white@uiowa.edu). We will continue the excellent work that Chris has produced over the years. Thanks for your cooperation! Brad A. Amendt Associate Dean For Research Pediatric Dentistry Residents Provide Services to Forest City Individuals with Significant Health Care Needs On August 28-29, pediatric dental residents from the College of Dentistry provided services to 40 individuals who reside in Forest City, Iowa, and the surrounding area. Because all of these individuals have significant special health care needs, a trip to Iowa City becomes difficult for dental care. However, for over 15 years, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry has been able to provide care through the use of portable equipment and the support of both the college and Mosaic, a northern Iowa service, which serves people with intellectual disabilities. Care was provided by Drs. Megan Rohman, Casey Goetz, Nicole Young, and dental assistant Michele Murphy, under the faculty supervision of Dr. Kecia Leary. 3 Page 3 UI Mobile Museum to Feature the College of Dentistry Biorepository Project in One of Their Exhibits in 2018 The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics submitted an application for an exhibit on the UI Mobile Museum entitled What is Translational Science? College of Dentistry Biorepository An Opportunity for Advancing Personalized Healthcare. It was accepted and the exhibit will be traveling with the Mobile Museum in Drs. Azeez Butali, Dental Research and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine; Arwa Owais, Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and Veerasathpurush Allareddy, Department of Orthodontics, are co-principal investigators on a three-year, $597,645 Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust grant. The grant is being utilized to develop a biorepository that will combine biological materials as well as dental and medical records. It will also establish a fully integrated medical, genetic and dental patient record to improve quality of care provided to the patients. In addition, it will enhance broader quality research across the UI medical and dental facilities. These data and biological materials will be available to UI researchers and collaborators to conduct groundbreaking research, deliver personalized precision medicine and improve the health of patients. The integration of medical and dental information in axium (College of Dentistry) and Epic (UI Hospitals and Clinics) has also been completed for 250,000 individuals. Progeny, a genetic data management software product, will house the patient specimen and pedigree information. Ms. Amber Marolf and Ms. Karen Kluesner, both Dental Research, are collecting volunteers saliva, teeth and tissue samples, and entering the data. The University of Iowa Mobile Museum launched in 2014 as a partnership between the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, the Office of the State Archaeologist, and the Pentacrest Museums. The mobile museum s travels throughout Iowa each year occur between April 1 - October 31. Volleyball Match: Orthodontic Residents Win (Left): Recently, the Endodontic residents were dominated by the Orthodontic residents in volleyball. Orthodontics resident Tom Crary commented, Endodontic residents have a better chance of locating an MB2 canal in an 80-year-old than competing against the Orthodontics residents. Rematch, anyone?!

4 Page 4 Former Summer Student Researcher at the CoD Continues Conducting Research at Luther College (Left to right): Amber Bates (PhD student), Erica Recker (D4), Dr. Emily Lanzel (OPRM), Christopher Treinen (Class of 2017), Dr. Nicole Brogden (College of Pharmacy), Herky the Hawk, Paula Gomez (D4), Dr. Kim Brogden (director, Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research), Emily Starman (currently a Luther College student), and Dr. Vrushali Abhyankar (former periodontics resident). Emily Starman graduated from West High School in 2014 and is currently a Luther College student. She spent two summers doing research with Dr. Kim Brogden, director of the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research. Their area of research was the interaction of the programmed death-1 (PD-1) co-receptor on T cells with the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) on tumor cells, which can lead to immunosuppression in the pathogenesis of many tumors. I became interested in research after my freshman year of undergrad because I really enjoyed my lab classes, Emily says. I felt I could learn a lot more about the applications of what I was learning during class if I could work on research and hands-on projects. And what does she like about research? I like that research has both individual problem-solving components and collaborative components. I have especially loved meeting and working with many new people through my research experiences I really enjoyed the subject matter: immunology and microbiology I was able to learn so much working with Dr. Brogden, Dr. Carol Fischer and Amber Bates. Since I am a chemistry major [at Luther], I have not had the time to take these classes during the school year, but feel that I have had great introductions into these fields due to my research. I have also enjoyed meeting many dental students and attending events within the College of Dentistry throughout my summers. Emily was a co-author on a paper published in Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy in 2016: Predicting PD-L1 expression on human cancer cells using next-generation sequencing information in computational simulation models. (Dr. Emily Lanzel, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, was primary author; College of Dentistry co-authors included Paula Gomez (now a D4); Amber Bates (PhD student), Dental Research; Christopher Treinen ( 16 DDS); Dr. Carol Fischer (formerly Dental Research); D. Parashar, Cellworks Research India Ltd.; Dr. Janet Guthmiller, dean, University of Nebraska College of Dentistry; Dr. Georgia Johnson (Department of Periodontics); T. Abbasi and S. Vali (Cellworks Group, Inc.); and Dr. Kim Brogden, director of Dental Research). Her latest summer project at Luther with chemistry professor, Dr. Olga Michels, has included using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy to research how curcuminoids, a primary part of turmeric, bind with human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein found in human blood plasma. Their research is being funded with a Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant. And what are Emily s future plans? She ll be applying to dental school!

5 College of Dentistry Participates in First Poverty Simulation Page 5 (Above): Orientation to the Simulation family, including infants, toddlers, teenagers, adults, and disabled grandparents living at home. They interacted with human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers, as well as schools, housing shelters and healthcare workers. The students were surprised at some of the barriers they encountered, especially having to pay for transportation for every transaction. More than 20 volunteers from the College of Dentistry, the University, and the community donated their time to represent the community members in the simulation. Volunteers included: Linda Gorkow (HACAP), Aislinn Conrad (UI School of Social Work); Cailey Carson (UI nurse practitioner student); Larry Newman (geriatric nurse practitioner); Elizabeth Lara (UI EOD); Julia Rose (VA Hospital); Andy Huntsberger (Hills Bank); Megan McDowell (Carver College of Medicine); Kyle Vogel (Keystone Property Management); Steve Olson (retired banker); Rachell Swanson-Holm (UI Center for Disabilities and Development); Sara Sodawasser (Dr. Rhys B. Jones Dental Health Center, St. Luke s Hospital, Cedar Rapids); Nicole Keating (UI Summer Health Professions Education Program); Kristin Destrampe (UI Diversity Office); Officer Gabby Blanchard (UI Police (Above): Students rushing to get to work on time as part of the simulation exercise. On August 17, all D3 students participated in the College of Dentistry s first Poverty Simulation. This simulation enabled students to look at poverty from a variety of angles and then recognize and discuss the potential for change within the community as well as their dental practice. The simulation is designed to sensitize those who frequently interact with low-income families, as well as create a broader awareness of the realities of poverty. During the simulation, participants role-played the lives of low-income families. Some were Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients, some were disabled, some were senior citizens on Social Security, and some were families who had major economic changes in their household. All families had the task of providing for basic necessities, including shelter, food, childcare, and basic living expenses on a limited budget during the course of four 15-minute weeks. Students role-played all parts of a (Above): A student meeting with a social services organization as part of the exercise. 9 Page 9 College of Dentistry Biorepository Employee Participation Event We invite you to participate in a data and sample repository because you are a University of Iowa employee. We will collect your clinical information (dental and medical) and saliva for researchers to use in the future, to study and learn more about dental conditions and diseases. The overall goal is to find causes, better treatments, and ways to prevent health conditions and diseases. Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your decision to participate or not will in no way affect your academic or professional position with the University of Iowa. Approximately 20,000 people will take part in this study conducted by investigators at the University of Iowa. A container will be used to collect your saliva. It may take minutes for the ideal amount of saliva we need to be collected, but most participants usually take about 5 to 10 minutes. To participate, you must not eat or drink for 90 minutes prior to specimen collection. You will be given a choice of a $5.00 gift card or 4 hours of University of Iowa parking passes currently valued at $4.80 as compensation. We have set aside Monday, September 11, 2017 from 8 am to 3 pm in room 14D (outside of Galagan A), first floor of the College of Dentistry, for a special employee collection day. Please contact Karen Kluesner , Amber Marolf , or dentistry-biorepository@uiowa.edu for more information, or to schedule an appointment.
