Why do we fear mental illness?
Truths vs. Untruths It s personal It s a family matter Mentally ill = danger and violence You are more likely to encounter someone who is experiencing a behavioral health condition or crisis than someone facing a physical emergency.
Mental Health Surveys show that 40% of Americans seeking help with mental health issues turn first to ministers, priests and rabbis. Individuals struggling with mental illness are significantly less likely to receive the same level of pastoral care as persons in the hospital with physical illnesses, are dying or have long-term illnesses. Rev. Susan Gregg-Schroeder, Mental Health Ministries
Mental Health in Faith Communities Some religious groups discourage therapeutic treatments Negative views about mental illness Mental illness is underrated Most worship services are silent Clergy are not equipped Clark S. Aist, Ph.D., Supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education, St. Elizabeth s Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Activity What are some things you can do in your faith communities to foster less stigma? How do we get people to come to events on Mental Health or complete Mental Health First Aid training?
What Can Faith Communities Do? Reach out to persons and families dealing with mental illness Integrate spirituality into the treatment process Understand that mental illness is just the same as any physical illness Help congregation understand the grief involved for families and persons dealing with mental illness
What Can Faith Communities Do? Host a Mental Health First Aid Training session Develop a mental health ministry Educate, train and equip leadership staff, lay leaders, greeters and ushers Be welcoming, inclusive, supportive, and engaged Peer support groups
What Can Faith Communities Do? Become familiar with local resources Include sermon messages regarding mental health regularly Create an environment of care Engage in community outreach and advocacy Help bring mental health out of the darkness
In a nation facing a crisis in care for people with mental illnesses and addictions, widespread training in Mental Health First Aid for every American increases the chance that people will get the initial support they need and crisis can be averted. National Council for Behavioral Health
