3 WHICH DEATHS? Homicides (includes Domestic Violence module) Suicides (includes Overdose module) Undetermined Manner Firearm Deaths Multiple-death incidents Starts with 2015 deaths Initial data within 6 months of death Complete data within 18 months of death

4 WHICH TYPES OF DEATHS? Child maltreatment Intimate partner Police involved All firearm, including unintentional Suicide overdoses (but not accidental) Incident-based, e.g., multiple deaths in 48 hours (e.g., homicide-suicide combination)

5 WHAT DATA ARE COLLECTED? No Personal Identifying Information (PII): All cases de-identified No identifiable cases revealed ( low cell size restrictions ) Demographics (age, sex) Type of death (cause, manner) Weapon information Toxicology information Circumstance information, for example Financial difficulties Mental or physical health issues (e,g., substance abuse) Marital problems Criminal justice involvement

Both are rural states --similarities Low homicide rate High suicide rate Isolation, poverty, and domestic violence issues are common Death investigation similarities Similar medical examiner systems Small populations = small numbers for statistics Northern New England regional patterns Combine data numbers for more explanatory power New Hampshire has agreed to collaborate

7 HOW DOES IT WORK? Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner = headquarters Collect data from ME & VT Offices of Chief Medical Examiner and send it to CDC Manage data for ME & VT state-level purposes Collaboration with ME & VT Depts. of Health and law enforcement agencies, as well as Child Fatality Review Panels Homicide Review Panels Advisors = stakeholders who provide or use data Public health Public safety & law enforcement Suicide & injury prevention programs

9 FIREARM DATA Data collected for every death involving a firearm (including accidental firearm deaths) Types of data collected: Firearm type (pistol, shotgun, revolver) Specific firearm type (semi-automatic, pump action, etc.) Caliber/gauge Make/model Ownership information Storage information (where, locked, loaded)

10 DATA MODULES: INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE Used in homicide cases that involved violence or threat of violence by a current or former intimate partner that resulted in the death of one or more people. Data collected from medical records, law enforcement incident reports, criminal records, court records, and restraining order records. Collects data on victim and suspect s history and circumstances Criminal histories Physical/mental health Substance abuse Relationship characteristics Cohabitation Children in the home?
