Filling Station Menu Be a Healthy Hawk! 7 UI Health Fair Noemi Cruz-Orcutt, Kirstina Gratz and Dr. Marcela Hernandez Attend Annual Meeting of the Hispanic Dental Association Noemi Cruz-Orcutt (D3), Kirstina Gratz (D3), and Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Department of Operative Dentistry, and their mentor, attended the 17 th annual meeting of the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) in Houston, Texas, on October 22-24, They attended seminars about access to care issues for the Hispanic population as well as other minority groups and also attended panel discussions on cultural awareness for the oral health professional; diversity; education; and the workforce. Noemi presented a poster titled Reaching Out to Improve Oral Health in the Hispanic Community in Iowa, which focused on outreach and educational programs that the HDA Iowa chapter has implemented during the past two years. Co-authors included Kirstina Gratz (D3); Laura Mausser (D4); Elizabeth Sasse (D2); Treagan White (D3); and Dr. Marcela Hernandez, Department of Operative Dentistry. Dr. Hernandez is Noemi s mentor. Kirsty won $1000 in the Scientific Session with her poster, Dental Students Willingness to Treat Underserved Populations. Co-authors included Drs. Michelle McQuistan, Ray Kuthy, and Fang Qian, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry. Dr. McQuistan is Kirsty s mentor. See additional photos on pages 5-6 Dr. Axel Ruprecht Invited Speaker at ABOMR & AAOMR Meetings Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, recently attended the annual meeting of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR) and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR). As the invited speaker at the ABOMR session, Dr. Ruprecht presented a tribute to the maxillofacial radiology specialty, written in the vein of the Gettysburg Address. His talk promoted the importance of professionally contributing to the maxillofacial radiology specialty. During the AAOMR session, Dr. Ruprecht was the H. Kline Fixott Sr. Memorial Lecturer. He presented X Ray and Me, a take-off on the book Marley & Me. His talk covered radiology and world history from , or from Dr. Ruprecht s residency to today.

Three senior dental students joined Dr. Bill Synan, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, following the Hawks last second nail-biting, nerve-wracking win over Michigan State.
