Box 600, 167 North Main Street Tuba City, AZ (928) Page 1 Team Tuba City completed the 2014 Rock N Roll Marathon/Half Marathon Sunday January 19, Seventy-two people participated in Team Tuba City, which included 6-relay teams, 53-half marathon runners and 13-marathon runners. Individual experience ranged from beginners, and all the way to the more competitive runners. Majority of the team members resided locally and others were from Inscription House, Tonalea, Kayenta, Hotevilla, Flagstaff and Phoenix. Team Tuba City consisted of a variety of participants but more importantly wanted to be a part of a team and support system for one another to make sure everyone finished. The TCRHCC Health Promotion and Diabetes Prevention Program provided the team with coaching sessions, training programs and running groups to help members reach their running goals. On behalf of TCRHCC HP& DPP we wanted to congratulate Team Tuba City on a job well done and to remember anything is possible if you put your mind to it. We hope to see more participants join Team TC for the 2015 Rock N Roll PF Changs Marathon/Half Marathon.

2 Page 2 Highlights Number of Online Student Received DETS Lessons Spring 2010-Spring 2012 (Students Enrolled Year1-1,872, Year2-1,756) YEAR 1 YEAR 2 Diabetes Education for Tribal Schools Curriculum (DETS) Provides Foundation for Healthy Choices Among Local Students by Brooke Holiday, HP Specialist Tuba City Service Unit schools have spent the last couple of years training and building the capacity of their educators in the DETS curriculum. In hopes to integrate health education into the classroom. The curriculum developed by the CDC and in partnership with the National Institue of Health, Department of Health & Human Services, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disesases, Office of Science Education, Indian Health Service and several American Indian colleges across the U.S. DETS was developed to provide quality and culturally-appropriate health education on diabetes to tribal schools. DETS is a free curriculum and can be adapted to all teaching styles. Postive aspects of DETS, is lessons are aligned with National Science & Health Education Standards. Helping schools and teachers combine multiple standards into one lesson, for example an elementary school teacher can provide a lesson on healthy snacks for Kindergartners, that will include identifying fruits & vegetables, colors, counting and even include an introduction to graphs and tables. The DETS lesson for healthy snacks goes over counting, compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy snacks. Students then practice their sorting skills to seperate the snacks into categories of apples, bananas and chips. After use simple math to sum up each snack item, they compare which foods are the most or least. All supporting DETS multiple benefits and meeting several education standards for that age group. Education in our schools is evolving and our schools are rising to the challenges. Our educators are more than people teaching academics but are teaching and supporting healthy behaviors in the classroom as well. In 2011, 73 educators were trained in DETS and another 73 in In those same years, 676 students recieved DETS lessons and the following year, 1,369 students recieved DETS. 3 10 tips Nutrition Education Series be a healthy role model for children 10 tips for setting good examples USDA 10 Healthy Tips Page 3 You can do many things to help your children develop healthy eating habits for life. Offering a variety of foods helps children get the nutrients they need from every food group. They will also be more likely to try new foods and to like more foods. When children develop a taste for many types of foods, it s easier to plan family meals. Cook together, eat together, talk together, and make mealtime a family time! 6 1show by example Eat vegetables, fruits, and whole grains with meals or as snacks. Let your child see that you like to munch on raw vegetables. 2 go food shopping together Grocery shopping can teach your child about food and nutrition. Discuss where vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein foods come from. Let your children make healthy choices. focus on each other at the table Talk about fun and happy things at mealtime. Turn off the television. Take phone calls later. Try to make eating meals a stress-free time. 7 listen to your child If your child says he or she is hungry, offer a small, healthy snack even if it is not a scheduled time to eat. Offer choices. Ask Which would you like for dinner: broccoli 3 get creative in the kitchen Cut food into fun and easy shapes with cookie cutters. Name a food your child helps make. Serve Janie s Salad or Jackie s Sweet Potatoes for dinner. Encourage your child to invent new snacks. Make your own trail mixes from dry whole-grain, low-sugar cereal and dried fruit. 4 offer the same foods for everyone Stop being a short-order cook by making different dishes to please children. It s easier to plan family meals when everyone eats the same foods. 8 limit screen time Allow no more than 2 hours a day of screen time like TV and computer games. Get up and move during commercials to get some physical activity. 9 encourage physical activity Make physical activity fun for the whole family. Involve your children in the planning. Walk, run, and play with your child instead of sitting on the sidelines. Set an example by being physically active and using safety gear, like bike helmets. 5 reward with attention, not food 10 Show your love with hugs and kisses. Comfort with hugs and talks. Choose not to offer sweets as rewards. It lets your child think sweets or dessert foods are better than other foods. When meals are not eaten, kids do not need extras such as candy or cookies as replacement foods. be a good food role model Try new foods yourself. Describe its taste, texture, and smell. Offer one new food at a time. Serve something your child likes along with the new food. Offer new foods at the beginning of a meal, when your child is very hungry. 4 Page 4 Nutrition ASIAN MANGO AND CHIC KEN WRAPS Sweet and juicy ripe mangos are the perfect balance for the savory ingredients in this Asian wrap. Dinner s ready in 30 minutes, or make ahead for a tasty portable lunch. Preparation time: Serves: 4 30 minutes INGREDIENTS : 2 ripe mangos, peeled, pitted, and diced 1½ cups chopped roasted chicken breast 2 green onions, sliced 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped ½ red bell pepper, chopped 1½ cups shredded Savoy or Napa cabbage 2 medium carrots, grated 1/3cup fat-free cream cheese 3 tbsp natural creamy peanut butter, unsalted 2 tsp low-sodium soy sauce 4 whole-wheat tortillas, 8 Food Group Amounts DIRECTIONS : Cut mangos, vegetables, and chicken. Place in a mixing bowl and toss until well mixed. 2. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together cream cheese, peanut butter, and soy sauce. 3. To assemble: lay out tortillas on a surface. On each tortilla, spread ¼ of cream cheese mixture and top with mango, vegetable, and chicken mix. Roll up tightly, tucking in ends of tortilla. Secure with toothpicks. 4. To serve, cut each wrap in half. 5. If not serving immediately, refrigerate; holds well overnight. 1 cup 3/4cup 1½ oz 2½ oz Serving Suggestions: Serve with an 8 oz glass of non-fat milk.
