2 Tate & Lyle Oat Ingredients Formerly Biovelop, acquired by Tate & Lyle in 2013 Operates out of a plant in Kimstad, Sweden, located in the heart of Sweden s oat fields A soluble (33%) oat beta glucan, with authorised health claims in several countries, for lowering cholesterol and/or reducing post-prandial glycaemic response (1) A unique oat protein (55%) that can enrich the protein content of many foods, such as breakfast cereals, cereal bars, baked goods, sports nutrition and supplements (1) "Health claims and/or nutrient function claims are possible in a number of markets including both the USA and EU. Depending on the market, there are health claims relating to heart health and/or glycaemic response. Prospective purchasers are advised to conduct their own tests, studies and regulatory review to determine the fitness of Tate & Lyle products for their particular purposes, product claims or specifications; (2) Prospective purchasers are advised to conduct their own regulatory review to determine whether it is possible to make a natural claim in their market

4 Oat Beta Glucan Produced from non-gm, Swedish oats Rich in (1 3), (1 4) oat beta glucan soluble fibre (35%) High molecular weight Clean label ingredient (1) Can be Gluten-free in finished products (2) PromOat Beta-Glucan Energy (3) Total fat Saturated fat Carbohydrate Fibre (beta-glucan) Sugars Protein Sodium 315 kcal or 1319 kj 0.5 g < 0.1 g 56 g 35 g < 0.5 g 4 g < 25 mg Values per 100g on a dry weight basis Beta Glucan - 33g min, 34-36g is typical range (1) Prospective purchasers are advised to conduct their own regulatory review to determine whether it is possible to make a natural claim in their market. (2) Possibilities for gluten-free positioning are dependent on the recipe and the level of use. (3) Determined by calculation using 2 kcal/g for the soluble fibre portion. When using 4 kcal/g for the soluble fibre portion, the calculated calorie value is 385 kcal per 100 g.
5 A Powerful Combination of Health Benefits Health Benefits of Beta Glucan Cholesterol reduction (1) and effect on heart health Low glycaemic effect /Helps modulate glycaemic response Fat replacement and calorie reduction Fibre enhancement, which may help promote satiety and digestive health (1) Health claims and/or nutrient function claims are possible in a number of markets including the USA and EU. (2) In Europe, EFSA and the European Commission have granted the following health claim for oat beta glucan : (1) Beta glucans contribute to the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels (European Commission Regulation, Article 13.1) (2) Oat beta glucan has been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol. High Cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease, (European Commission Regulation, Article 14) (3) To use the claim on a food product, a serving has to contain at least 1 g of oat beta-glucan. Moreover, The Panel considers that, in order to bear the claim, foods should provide at least 3 g of oat beta-glucan per day. This amount can reasonably be consumed as part of a balanced diet. (3) Depending on the market, there are health claims relating to heart health and/or glycaemic response.
6 Potential Mechanism of Reducing Blood Cholesterol by Beta Glucan 1 Bile is produced in the liver to aid the digestion of fats in the small intestine. Production of bile requires cholesterol 2 Beta-glucan is consumed and enters the stomach before passing into the intestine and forming a viscous gel 4 With reduced levels of bile now entering the blood stream, the liver needs to synthesize more bile; it does this by removing cholesterol from the blood. As more bile is produced, there is less cholesterol available for the production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad type of cholesterol. 3 Beta-glucan binds to bile acids in the intestine, which are subsequently excreted from the body Many clinical trials over the years have shown than oat beta-glucan helps to lower blood cholesterol. Evidence indicates that at least 3g beta glucan per day are necessary to have an effect on cholesterol levels 6

8 Oat Beta Glucan and Glycaemic Response Impact on Glycaemic Response Oat beta glucan has a low glycaemic response (European Commission Regulation, Article 13.1) In addition, research indicates that oat beta-glucan, consumed with a meal, may help maintain healthy blood glucose levels after the meal Potential Mechanism Beta glucan forms a viscous gel in the stomach which entraps nutrients and slows down the digestion of food This results in slower gastric emptying and steady, more sustained absorption of sugars, thereby reducing post-prandial glycaemic response In Europe, EFSA and the European Commission have concluded that Consumption of beta glucans from oats as part of a meal contributes to a reduction of the blood glucose rise afterthat meal (European Commission Regulation, Article 13.1). This claim requires 4g oat beta glucan per 30g carbohydrates in a quantified portion as part of the meal. 8 11/20/2014
