4 4 EGVM Update EGVM Background EGVM was identified as the cause of yield loss in several vineyards in Napa County in the late summer of 2009; EGVM and the associated Botrytis infections caused complete loss of harvest from two vineyards (fields) and unacceptable tainting of wine made from grapes of another vineyard Traps were deployed by CDFA, but most of the population had gone into diapause and only a handful of moths were captured This is the first time Lobesia botrana had been detected in the United States; these detections were from Oakville, Napa County, California Delimitation trapping grids were placed out in Napa and surrounding counties in the spring of 2010; the program captured nearly 1000 moths in these traps by mid-april A Technical Working Group (TWG) with international and domestic experts was formed and has provided recommendations for survey, treatment and eradication

5 Growers encouraged to control EGVM in vineyards; UC Cooperative Extension working with growers Growers in Napa purchased twist ties and placed them; USDA purchased and placed twist ties in Mendocino County European Grapevine Moth For state sponsored residential treatments, residents have the option of fruit removal or Dipel DF applications

18 Sterile Insect Technique PPQ CPHST SIT rearing facility currently is producing approximately 100,000 adult moths per week at their Moss Landing facility 18 LBAM Update Phase two of this facility is being brought on line which boost production capabilities to one million adult moths per week Adult moths are currently being sterilized at the Lawrence Livermore Lab prior to evaluation tests and releases Evaluation releases are currently being conducted in vineyards in Napa and Sonoma counties 2011 start date for area-wide SIT

21 21 Threats to CA Emerald Ash Borer Larvae feed on the inner back of ash trees, disrupting the tree s ability to transport water and nutrients Since its discovery, EAB has killed tens of millions of ash trees in southeastern Michigan alone, with tens of millions more lost in Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, NY, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin

22 22 Threats to CA Plum Pox Virus A disease of stone fruit trees Symptoms vary according to cultivar, age, nutritional status of the host and environmental factors such as temperature PPV reduces the quality of stone fruit and, over a period of time, renders the tree useless for fruit production

23 23 Threats to CA False Codling Moth In June 2005, live False Codling Moth caterpillars were found at California s border stations inside previously coldtreated Clementine citrus from South Africa In July 2008, an adult male False Codling Moth was found in Ventura County Intensive surveying around the site confirmed that no reproducing population of the pest existed there False Codling Moth is not established in California and agriculture officials maintain a strong program to exclude the pest

24 24 Huanglongbing Threats to CA HLB is one of the most serious citrus plant diseases in the world; once a tree is infected, there is no cure HLB is now a serious threat to the U.S. citrus industry; infected trees produce fruit that are green, misshapen and bitter, unsuitable for sale as fresh fruit or for juice; most infected trees die within a few years Once the ACP picks up the disease, it carries it for the rest of its life; HLB is then spread by moving infected plant material, such as potted plants, bud wood and even leaves

25 25 Threats to CA Asian Longhorn Beetle Before Asian Longhorned Beetle A new and potentially serious threat to some of North America s most beautiful and popular trees Asian Longhorn Beetle After Trees favored by the ALB are predominantly maples, but infestations have also been discovered in horsechestnuts, poplars, willows, elms, mulberries and black locusts In all cases of infestation, the affected trees are cut down and the wood destroyed
