1 Introduction Yoga is a most ancient system or education based on higher Philosophical knowledge and a spiritual concept of man, for the harmonious development of the body and mind. It recognizes the necessity of developing healthy, vital and well controlled body for the attainment of a high order of mental life. While, health is a state of organism in which all organs function uninterruptedly and vigorously and in full co-operation with one another for a longer survival and the best development of the body. It helps the man to express his best through his intellectual, moral, spiritual and physical activities. A vital body and dynamic mind are intimately associated with vital health. When health is established, the body becomes a fitter machine, more enduring, more powerful, better developed and better controlled, the mind becomes alert, more imaginative better balanced and more contemplative and the emotions more normalised and normalised. The practice of yogasanas, yogic kriyas, pranayams, relaxation and meditation calm down the whole system. This In turn, facilitates proper assimilation of food and strengthens the lungs, digestive and circulatory system. Over a period of time, checks attacks and even cures the condition. The most important benefit of yoga is physical and mental therapy. To get maximum benefit of yoga, one has to combine the practice of Yogasanas,

2 Pranayama and Meditation. Regular practice of asanas, prannayamas and meditation can help such diverse ailments such as Diabetes, Blood-pressure, digestive disorders, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue, asthma, varicose veins and heart conditions. Laboratory tests have proved the yogi s increased ability of consciously controlling autonomic or involuntary functions, such as temperature, heartbeat and blood pressure. Yoga cannot "cure" diabetes, but there are several ways yoga can be beneficial in controlling diabetes. If medically prescribed regimens are followed by diabetic students, they can safely add yoga to their treatment. Due to the potential impact on their glucose levels, and overall body function, great strides can be made through regular committed yoga practice. Yoga also helps maintain the elasticity of blood vessels. This further assists in good circulation. In turn, increased oxygen is supplied to internal organs and the important glands of the endocrine system. When the blood vessels remain elastic, this means better heart health and decreased risk of stroke. Statement of the Problem In present time So many diseases have raised their heads against the human beings. And the DIABETES is one of them which has hunted lots of people and trapped them. According to some people says man becomes diabetic because of

3 bad eating habit of eating lots of sweet food, long time mental stress, and some says it s genetically. All these reasons are responsible but not 100% for the diabetes. It affects all our body and all our physiological variables. In the treatment of diabetes Ayurveda, Allopathy, Homeopathy ect. Are not fully successful to make body free from diabetes. In the country some yoga Gurus, Babas challenge that yoga is the thing with which we can fight against diabetes and can make our body totally free from diabetes. So, it will be interesting study to check out the effect of some Asanas, Anuloma viloma and Kaplabhati on selected physiological variables of diabetic patients. Problem and its Relevance Diabetes poses a major health problem globally and is one of the top five leading causes of death in most developed countries. A substantial body of evidence suggests that it could reach epidemic proportions particularly in developing and newly industrialized countries. Indeed, by the year 2025, three-quarters of the world's 300 million adults with diabetes will be in developing countries and almost a third in India and China

4 alone. The prevalence of diabetes in India is showing a sharp upswing as is evident from secular trends from different parts of the subcontinent and studies of migrant Indians. The World Health Organization has estimated that in 1995, 19.4 million individuals were affected by diabetes in India and these numbers are expected to increase to 57.2 million by the year 2025 i.e. one- sixth of the world total. The revised figures are 80.9 million by the year Some findings suggest that better glycaemic control and stable autonomic functions can be obtained in Type 2 DM cases with Yogasana [Yoga Postures] and Pranayama [Voluntary regulated Yoga Breathing]. The exact mechanism as to how these postures and controlled breathing interact with somato-neuro-endocrine mechanism affecting metabolic and autonomic functions remains to be worked out. In a study twenty Type 2 diabetic subjects between the age group of 30 to 60 years were studied to see the effect of 40 days of Yogasana [Yoga Postures] on biochemical profile. The duration of diabetes ranged from 0 to 10 years. The study suggests that Yogasana [Yoga Postures] have a beneficial effect on glycaemic control and lipid profile in mild to moderate Type 2 diabetes. A study done in twenty four NIDDM patients of 30 to 60 year old provides metabolic and clinical evidence of improvement in glycaemic control and

5 pulmonary functions. These middle-aged subjects were type II diabetics on antihyperglycaemic and dietary regimen. Their baseline fasting and postprandial blood glucose and glycosylated Hb were monitored along with pulmonary function studies. With this review, investigator sought to determine the effect of selected asanas, anulom-vilom and kapalbhati on selected physiological variables of diabetic patients. As to date, a large number of publications are available, studying various aspects of yoga in health and disease. This makes a strong base that some asanas, anulom-vilom and kapalbhati may be useful to control and cure of blood sugar level and blood pressure level of diabetic patients.
