5 Facts worth knowing about the CTE ceramic ceramic substructure material Horizontal section through a schematic crown Horizontal section through a schematic crown ceramicsubstructure material substructure material Horizontal section through a schematic crown If the CTE of the substructure material is considerably lower than the CTE of the veneering ceramic, tangential tensile stress will increase and form cracks that run to the outside. This may result in late cracks. If the CTE of the substructure material is considerably higher than the CTE of the veneering ceramic, tangential compressive stress will increase and form cracks that run almost parallel to the substructure. This may result in flaking. The ideal tangential and radial tensile stress is ensured if the CTE of the ceramic has been optimally matched with the CTE of the substructure material. This way crack formation is avoided due to precise matching of CTEs. Optimal preconditions are given if the veneering ceramic features a somewhat lower CTE value than the substructure material. Due to the adhesive bonding, the ceramic must follow the thermal behavior of the substructure material. If cooled down, the ceramic is exposed to slight tangential compressive stress. Cracks that are beginning to form are sealed and crack propagation will be stopped. If a substructure material is veneered with ceramic, the thickness of the veneer is a decisive factor in addition to the CTE value. Accordingly, differences in strain (radial tensile stress) are obtained, which will grow in case of increasing layer thickness. VENEERING MATERIAL page 5

6 Aspects of material properties VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC The VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC which consist of Y-TZP (Yttria stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal) rank among the most efficient oxide ceramics for dental applications. Their outstanding mechanical properties combined with their light color and translucency provide fascinating possibilities for creating all ceramic restorations. By processing this new material (VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC) with the proven Sirona inlab CAD/CAM technology previous technical limits of all ceramic tooth restorations can be passed in a highly aesthetic manner. After sintering in the VITA ZYrcomat, the material exhibits a three-point bending strength of well above 900 MPa according to DIN EN ISO This high strength combined with the excellent fracture toughness of the Y-TZP results in excellent longterm behavior and outstanding clinical success rates even in case of very high permanent loads. The superb fracture toughness of the Y-TZP is based on the so-called transition intensification. The ZrO 2 crystals in the Y-TZP are in a metastable, tetragonal phase condition due to the addition of Y 2 O 3 which is normally reached by the unstabilized ZrO 2 in a temperature range between 950 C and 2370 C. If energy is supplied to the tetragonal zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ), e.g. in the form of a crack running through the material, the zirconium crystals transform into their more stable (at room temperature) monoclinic phase while their volume increases. The energy consumed during the transformation and the compressive stress in the structure resulting from the increase in volume cause deceleration or even a stop of the crack. The fracture toughness of the VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES amounts to 5.9 MPa m, determined according to the SEVNB method (Single-Etch-V-Notched-Beam). The three-point bending strength and the fracture toughness allow smaller cross-sections of junctures to ensure enhanced aesthetics and protection of the tooth substance. Pre-sintered VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES (fig. 1) reveal isotropic shrinkage of approx. 20% during the sintering process, which results in excellent fit and high surface quality of the restorations. After sintering, a dense, pore-free structure is obtained (fig. 2). Fig. 1: Microstructure of the porous VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES. Fig. 2: Microstructure of the sintered VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES. VENEERING MATERIAL page 6

7 VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC in conjunction with Mechanical surface treatment such as grinding with coarse diamond tools and sandblasting may supply hypercritical quantities of energy to the zirconium oxide substructure, which may result in a deformation of large areas of the crystal lattice or even in the phase transition of the ZrO 2. As a consequence, complex tension can be formed at the interface of the veneer which may result in the immediate failure or also in critical crack growth and consequential late damage to the restoration. This effect can be detected e.g. by radiographic phase analysis (fig. 3). Compared with tetragonal ZrO 2, monoclinic ZrO 2 features a lower CTE of approx /K. If reworking of sintered Y-TZP is required, the following basic guidelines must be observed: Grinding should only be performed using fine diamond tools. Cool with water and exert only little pressure when grinding. Areas exposed to tensile stress during the clinical use, e.g. connectors of bridge structures, should not be ground. Final thermal treatment of the substructure is recommended to reverse any phase transitions. A single firing process at 1000 C and a holding time of 15 minutes are sufficient. monolinic sintered sandblasted counts monolinic monolinic monolinic monolinic monolinic Fig. 3: X-ray diffraction diagram of a Y-TZP (blue) and its phase transition after sandblasting (red). 2-Theta VENEERING MATERIAL page 7

8 Procedure in the case of coloured VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES/ For information on the procedure in the case of non-shaded VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES and zirconium oxide substructures of other manufacturers see p COLORING LIQUID (1 shade per VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER Lightness Level) is used for the shading of milled substructures made of VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES to the required lightness level. This coloration facilitates the accurate shade reproduction with. The use of COLORING LIQUID does away with the need to use VITA VM 9 EFFECT BONDER. In order to achieve a stable bond between the shaded VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES substructures and we recommend a BASE DENTINE wash opaque firing according to the following firing procedure: Predr. C C/ approx. temp. C VAC Careful adherence to the working instructions is essential for the success of the veneer. 9 Working instructions COLORING LIQUID for VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES The restorations should be cleaned in distilled water and grinding dust removed before use. A cleansing firing should be carried out in a ceramic furnace (e.g. VITA VACUMAT) in order to remove the CEREC coolant and lubricant DENTATEC from the porous structure. Place the substructure on a fibrous pad firing support for firing. Cleansing firing in VITA VACUMAT Predr. C C/ approx. temp. C VAC The restoration can be immersed in VITA COLORING LIQUID according to the lightness level desired from LL1 (light) to LL5 (dark). The recommended immersion time is 2 minutes. During immersion, vacuum or air pressure (2 bar) can be applied additionally. Important: Use only acrylic tweezers for immersion! Wipe off excess COLORING LIQUID with a paper handkerchief and briefly dry. Do not sinter in a wet state. Alternatively, COLORING LIQUID can be used with the VITA SPRAY-ON SYSTEM or applied in a thin layer with a brush to the areas of the restoration to be coloured. Avoid formation of puddles. The liquid is absorbed rapidly. The substructure can be coloured at the margins from inside and outside in order to ensure complete penetration of colour. Important: The application brush should be used only for the application of COLORING LIQUID! For this purpose we recommend the flat brush (VITA art. No. B297) for PASTE OPAQUE. Do not use for layering the ceramic danger of discoloration! Clean the brush with distilled water only. Sinter the restorations shaded with COLORING LIQUID only in the sintering crucible (with air vent, art. No. E38011). Alternatively, the lid can be left off during sintering. This guarantees the unhindered and complete burning out of organic residue. Carry out further processing according to the working instructions for VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC (Art. no. 1128E). 10 BASIC layering ENAMEL Shaded all-ceramic substructure (CTE approx. 10.5) BASE DENTINE The BASIC layering technique is composed of BASE DENTINE and ENAMEL. The newly developed, color-bearing BASE DENTINE porcelains with excellent coverage represent the perfect precondition for the preparation of veneers with intensive shades. With this two-layer alternative, VITA offers an ideal solution for the reproduction of optimal shade results in case of thin walls. Additionally, the intensive shade effect of the BASE DENTINE allows the application of ENAMEL to easily achieve the desired translucency. The user is able to prepare a natural restoration with a lifelike appearance with only two layers. The intensity of the restoration can be influenced by differences in the layer thicknesses of BASE DENTINE and ENAMEL. The thicker the layer of BASE DENTINE, the more intensive the shade. The intensity of the shade (pale shades) will decrease when the layer thickness of ENAMEL increases. 16 BUILD UP layering ENAMEL shaded all-ceramic substructure (CTE approx. 10.5) DENTINE BASE DENTINE The BUILD UP layering consists of BASE DENTINE, DENTINE and ENAMEL. The use of the three-layer method permits reduced and more individual application of the ENAMEL porcelains, resulting in an even more convincing reproduction of the natural example. By combining ENAMEL and DENTINE according to the layer thickness of BASE DENTINE, the intensity of the shade can be individualized. An increased proportion of BASE DENTINE results in an intensified shade; larger quantities of DENTINE and ENAMEL will reduce the chroma of the shade. For the BUILD UP layering, the VITAVM 9 BUILD UP KIT* is required in addition to the BASIC KIT (see page 12). 26 Fine-particle ceramic For yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide substructures, such as VITA In-Ceram 2000 YZ CUBES for CEREC The new material is ideal for individualizing VITABLOCS Mark II for CEREC (see working instructons no. 1219E). has been designed as a special ceramic featuring a fine structure or yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 substructures with a CTE of approx x 10-6 /K. Like all VITAVM materials, excels in its light refraction and reflection behavior which is similar to that of enamel. Accordingly, the BASE DENTINE and DENTINE porcelains which have been perfectly matched within the VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER allow the production of restorations with a highly natural appearance. The use of fluorescent and opalescent additional materials allows individual and aesthetically appealing results. A modified manufacturing process helped to create a new type of ceramic. Compared to conventional ceramics, the structure that is obtained after firing reveals a particularly homogeneous distribution of the crystal and glass phase. This structure is defined as a fine-particle structure. Figure 1: The etched surface (etched with VITA CERAMICS ETCH for 20 s) reveals agglomerates of leucite crystals with diameters up to 30 µm. The differences in the CTE of the leucite agglomerates and the glass phase frequently result in stress cracks which can be seen at the bright rims of the cracks in the photo. Figure 2: The etched surface (etched with VITA CERAMICS ETCH for 20 s) reveals particularly fine distribution of the leucite crystals in the glass phase. The local balance of the different CTEs of leucite and glass phase avoids the formation of major stress cracks. Favorable surface condition The fine-particle structure provides a number of benefits for dental technicians, dentists and patients. Thanks to the homogeneous, dense surface, provides excellent grinding and polishing properties to ensure smooth and perfectly sealed surfaces. Accumulation of plaque on the ceramic surface is reduced considerably; hence easy care and cleaning of the high-quality restoration are supported. These materials feature a behavior similar to that of enamel and are particularly antagonist-friendly, which has been proved by studies of VITAVM 7 at the Dental Center of the University of Zurich and by Dr. Giordano, Goldman School of Medicine, University of Boston.
