The Council is responsible for advising the ADA on issues such as reputation management or advising the ADA on the image and brand implications of Association plans, programs, services and activities. The council also advises the ADA about strategic communication plans and policies between itself, the public, members, and the profession. Dr. Shenkin s vice chairmanship will be a one-year appointment. After one year, if no one opts to run for the chairmanship, Dr. Shenkin will become chair of the Council. Currently, Dr. Shenkin has a full-time pediatric dentistry practice in Augusta, Maine. He is also a part-time clinical assistant professor of health policy, health services research, and pediatric dentistry at Boston University School of Dental Medicine as well as an ADA expert media spokesperson in pediatric dentistry. See page 11 9 CDC Publishes Report on Dental Care in MMWR The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published, QuickStats: Percentage of Adults Aged Year who Have Had Problems with Their Teeth, by Race/Ethnicity and Type of Problem National Health Interview Survey, United States, This dental health information was extracted from the CDC s National Health Interview Survey, United States, 2008 and was published in the June 17, 2011, issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). (See: mmwr/) In the survey results, it was noted that in 2008, 4.6 million children aged 2-17 years (7%) had unmet dental needs because their families could not afford dental care. Thirty-four percent of uninsured children had no dental contact for more than two years (including those who never had a contact) compared with 15% of children with Medicaid and 12% of children with private health insurance. Ahn (DDS 11) received a certificate and gift (articulator) in recognition of outstanding achievement in prosthodontics. Dentsply International Award: Noemi Cruz-Orcutt (DDS 11) received a plaque as the outstanding senior student in complete denture prosthesis. International College of Dentists: Julie Graf (DDS 11) received a plaque as an outstanding student in implant dentistry. American College of Prosthodontics Award: Michael Buck (DDS 11) received a plaque as an outstanding senior student who showed high academic and clinical proficiency in prosthodontics. Ralph C. Appleby Removable Prosthodontics Award: Mary Kay Caniglia (D3) received a $50 check and certificate as an outstanding junior student in clinical removable prosthodontics. Keith Thayer Fixed Prosthodontics Award: Hatta Clark (D3) received a $50 check and certificate as an outstanding junior student in clinical fixed prosthodontics. Rudy Minger Award: Vanessa Warzecha (D2) received a $250 financial aid package and certificate as an outstanding sophomore student. American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) Award: Madj S. Haddad (DDS 11) received a certificate of recognition, a year s free membership in the State of the Science in Implant Dentistry (SSID) and a complimentary registration at the AAID annual meeting. Academy of Osseointegration Award: Carole Gleich (DDS 11) received a $500 check; a one-year complimentary membership to the Academy of Osseointegration, which includes a subscription to the International Journal of Maxillofacial Implants; and a complimentary registration at the Academy s next annual meeting. ICOI/Sullivan Dental Pre-doctoral Achievement Award: Julie Reynolds (DDS 11) received an award of $250 along with free tuition to any of the upcoming International Conference of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) implant symposiums. Dan Steele Memorial Scholarship Award: Noemi Cruz-Orcutt (DDS 11) was given income from an endowed fund as a senior dental student who plans to practice general dentistry, has a talent for prosthodontics, and is a caring clinician.

4 Page 4 Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry Presents 2011 Student Awards The Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry held their Awards Luncheon on June 1, 2011 in the Oral B Classroom. The following students received awards: Kirstina Gratz (DDS 11) received the W. Philip Phair Preventive Dentistry Award which was presented to her by Dr. John Warren. The award is presented to students who show exceptional interest and leadership toward the improvement of health and the well-being of society through a commitment to preventive dentistry. Lindsey Cosper (DDS 11) received the Samuel Johnston Student Fellowship Award presented by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to a student with outstanding care and skill and the desire to continue training in Geriatric and Special Care. (Preventive & Community Awards, continued on page 5)

Her mentor was Dr. Teresa Marshall. Susan McKernan, a postdoctoral research fellow, was recognized for receiving first place in the Post-doctoral Graduate Dental Specialty Awards at the Local AADR Research Day. Dr. John Warren, Preventive & Community; Dr. Michael Kanellis, Dental Clinic Administration; Dr. Elizabeth Momany, Public Policy Center; Dr. Peter Damiano, Preventive & Community; Dr. Karin Weber- Gasparoni, Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Timothy Ansley, UI Iowa Testing Programs, were co-authors on her project. Dr. Warren is Dr. Kateeb s mentor. Not pictured - Julie Reynolds (DDS 11) received the American Association of Public Health Dentistry award pre sented by Dr. John Warren. The award is presented to students who show interest and achieve ment in Community Dentistry and Dental Public Health. Kristi Ouderkirk-Bock (DDS 11) received the Excellence in Dentistry for the Elderly Award pre sented by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to students who show exceptional clinical proficiency and understanding of complex oral health needs of the frail elderly and medically com plex adults. Allison Fuller (DDS 11) received a Special Recognition Award for Excellence in Dentistry presented by Dr. Howard Cowen. Jeremy Goodson (DDS 11) received the Joel B. Huth Scholarship Award presented by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to students who demonstrate interest in serving the special care population. Brian Anderson (DDS 11) received the June McCarney Student Award presented by Dr. Howard Cowen. The award is presented to students who show leadership skills and compassion for those with special needs. Katherine Motz (D3) was recognized for her Procter & Gamble Pre-doctoral Poster Competition Third Place Award for her poster, In vitro Erosion Potential of Vitamin C Supplements. Co-authors included Dr. Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community; Jeff Harless and Maggie Hogan, Dows; Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit; and Dr. James Wefel, director of Dows. Her mentor was Dr. Teresa Marshall. Dr. Alejandra Valencia (MS 10) received the Keith E. Heller Dental Public Health Graduate Research Award. She was also recognized for receiving second place, Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health. Her mentor was Dr. Peter Damiano. Dr. Bhagyashree Pendharkar, postdoctoral research scholar, was recognized for receiving Honor able Mention, Leverett Graduate Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dental Public Health. Her mentor was Dr. Steven Levy.

Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. 40: , Filling Station Announcements Beginning Monday, June 27, 2011, the Filling Station will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m. This will continue through July 31. Beginning August 1, 2011, the Filling Station will be open from 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Shaggy Dog Story A husband and wife bought a parakeet, a cage and some seed at a pet shop. When they filled the seed bowl, the parakeet swallowed all of the seeds at once and then swelled to twice its size. They refilled the bowl and it swallowed all of those seeds, too. It grew even bigger! The couple kept adding more and more seed to the bowl and the parakeet just kept eating and growing. Soon they had used a whole box of seed. The parakeet began to talk: More seed! More seed! More seed! After two days, the couple realized it was very expensive to keep this bird. They tried to return it to the pet shop but the owner refused to take back the parakeet: This is a Rarey Bird a mutant. They just eat and eat and get bigger and bigger and live for years and years. You ll just have to live with it! The couple took Rarey home, kept feeding it, and became fond of it. They sold the car, the washing machine, the fridge, the furniture, the garden shed, and the lawn mower. They became so poor they couldn t even afford another packet of seed. Finally the husband said, We re going to have to kill Rarey we can t afford the bird anymore! They put Rarey in a wheelbarrow and took him to the top of a tall mountain. Jacking up the rear of the wheelbarrow with stones and earth, it was tilted and ready for Rarey to plummet 2000 feet. Suddenly, the bird began to sing: It s a long way to tip a Rarey! It s a long way to go!
