During her tenure she co-developed the NAMI Homefront course and developed the NAMI Family & Friends Seminar. She worked previously as Director of Programs for NAMI Ohio, as Program Coordinator for AmeriCorps National Service in St. Louis, Missouri and as Senior Program Director for student volunteer programs at the University of Minnesota YMCA in Minneapolis. Suzanne received her Bachelor's Degree in history from Washington University in St. Louis and her Master's Degree in Social Work Administration from Ohio State University.
What is NAMI?
What does NAMI do? EDUCATION SUPPORT ADVOCACY AWARENESS
WHY is this important? Anyone can be affected by a mental health condition Suicide is the 2 nd leading cause of death in the U.S. in people years old Recovery is possible
The Diagnosis DILEMMA

Facts 1 in 5 ADULTS and 1 in 5 YOUTH in the U.S. are experiencing or will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives Nearly 60% of ADULTS and 50% of YOUTH AGES 8-15 with a mental health condition don't receive treatment STIGMA is a major reason people don't seek help
BURNOUT is not just for professionals Emotional and physical exhaustion Emotional stress Absenteeism; decline in performance Increased escape behaviors Lowered self-regard
By sharing their experiences, peers bring hope to people in recovery and promote a sense of belonging within the community. SAMHSA: Recovery and Recovery Support
Working Definition of Recovery A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a selfdirected life, and strive to reach their full potential. SAMHSA s Working Definition of Recovery Recovery/PEP12-RECDEF
10 Guiding Principles of Recovery
Recovery Community Services Program (RCSP) Through the RCSP, SAMHSA recognizes that social support includes informational, emotional, and intentional support. Examples of peer recovery support services include: Peer mentoring or coaching Peer recovery resource connecting Recovery group facilitation Building community SAMHSA: Peer Support and Social Inclusion
How many years of experience do you have with mental illness?
What makes different?
The lived experience of the teachers, presenters and facilitators is the HEART of NAMI programs.

I don t know where I d be without NAMI Connection; it literally saved my life. I m so grateful for my group and now I just want to share this program with everyone living with a mental illness.
Family Support Group training is essential to the success of our support groups. Without the training. support groups would become nothing more than cry sessions or gripe sessions.

Thank you for coming to my school and sharing our story. You have changed my life forever. The things you explained about your depression relate to how I feel. When I got home, I immediately talked to my parents and hopefully I will get some help. I have had many thoughts of suicide
After seeing an In Our Own Voice presentation, several of the mental health staff stated that they saw recovery as a real option for the first time ever.

This course has given me a sense of who I am. I understand what is going on with me and I am able to cope. I have gained employment and committed to my recovery.
I have been working at the hospital for 20 years, and this is one of the best programs I have been through for staff. We have worked hard over the years to create a more humanistic and compassionate culture. This program will definitely help us in that direction.
This is such a great step by step program that walks parents every step of the way. It is as if you are holding their hand through it all.
Learning as a family member will allow me to deal with my Dad s suicide and helping my family cope. Learning as a Service Member and with a mental illness, hopefully I will be able to help my wife and family deal with what goes on with me. The training was so helpful! I appreciate the time and effort that went into this class. It was well worth the time.
In the United States Today: 1.5 million U.S. Veterans age 17 or older (6.6 % of this population) had a substance use disorder in the past year 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, SAMHSA CBHSQ Report (5/7/15) Approximately 18.5% of service members returning from Iraq or Afghanistan have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression, and 19.5% report experiencing a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during deployment. SAMHSA Webpage Topics: Veterans and Military Families (retrieved 5/26/15)
The course should be on every psychiatrist prescription pad for families for their loved ones. A lot of heartache would be spared.
Sustaining POSITIVE Outcomes Improved coping Increased knowledge Empowerment Reduced family stress Increased help-seeking behaviors Improved problem solving skills Changed Improved attitudes coping toward mental health
