Slide 1 Slide 2 Marijuana and the Brain Slide 3 Fun Facts Ask: Can anyone tell me what they know about the brain? Roscoe the Raccoon is going to teach you some fun facts about your brain.

Slide 4 Your Squishy Brain Your brain looks like a large pinkish-gray walnut. Slide 5 Your brain is about the size of a grapefruit and feels soft and squishy. Slide 6 Weighing In A human brain weighs about 3 pounds. An elephant s brain weighs just over 11 pounds. That is more than the average newborn baby!

Slide 7 Neurons are nerve cells that are designed to carry messages through the brain. These messages help you do things like ride your bike, brush your teeth and do your school work. The human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Neurons in the Brain Notes: Neurons are the nerve cells in our brain that transmit information. Slide 8 Neurons Together, all the neurons in your brain can generate enough electricity to power a low-wattage bulb. Slide 9 Practice Makes Perfect Neurons are joined by tiny pathways in your brain. When you do something a lot like ride your bike the pathways in your brain that send messages about bike riding are strengthened.

Slide 10 Message Center Your brain sends more messages every day than all the text messages sent around the WORLD. Slide 11 Message Center Over 23 billion text messages are sent each day around the world. Slide 12 Speed Machine Messages from the nerves in your body move to your brain at more than 150 miles per hour.

Slide 13 Brain Workouts Exercising can make you smarter. When you exercise, blood flow to the brain is increased. Do 10 jumping jacks! Slide 14 Blood Supply Your brain has 100,000 miles worth of blood vessels enough to circle Earth approximately four times. Blood carries oxygen to your brain. Brain cells die if the supply of oxygen is interrupted. Slide 15 Your brain controls every single thing you do. It is the control center for your world. Control Center Review: Here are the areas of the brain and information on what those areas control.

Slide 16 Your Brain Allows you to move Slide 17 Your Brain Allows you to think and learn Slide 18 Your Brain Allows you to feel emotions, see, hear, taste, and remember

Slide 19 Your Amazing Brain Now that we have talked about all the cool things your brain can do, let s talk about some things that can affect how our brain works. Slide 20 Name a few things that can affect your brain s functions. These are a few examples: Lack of sleep Dehydration Sugar Exposure to pollution Alcohol Cigarettes Marijuana Slide 21 Marijuana s impact on the brain. Marijuana contains a compound called tetrahydrocannabinol. It is called THC for short. Review: Let s take a closer look at how marijuana affects the brain. THC is pronounced: tet ra hy dro can nab i nol

Slide 22 We know that locks and keys work together. Keys are designed to fit into certain locks. The receptors in your brain are much like locks, and THC fits into the receptors like a key. The THC in marijuana locks into receptors in the brain. When THC locks in, it takes control of the receptor in your brain. Lock and Key Notes: Here is some information on how THC works in the brain. Slide 23 Receptors in the Brain Notes: The areas represented with the locks are the areas of the brain most impacted by marijuana use. Yellow locks indicate receptors in the brain where THC locks in. Slide 24 How does marijuana affect your brain? When THC (the key) locks into the receptors (the locks) in the brain, it can reduce blood flow to important parts of the brain.

Slide 25 How does marijuana affect your brain? Do you remember how many miles of blood vessels there are in your brain? Slide 26 How does marijuana affect your brain? Do you remember how important it is for your brain to have good blood flow? Let s see what the brain looks like without good blood flow. Slide 27 What is different between these two brains? Which brain would you want? Ask students what they see as the difference between these two brain images. The spaces in the brain represent areas that are not getting adequate blood flow and thus oxygen depletion is occurring in certain places in the brain on the right.

Slide 28 This is a picture of a brain of someone who started using marijuana when he was 15. He has been using marijuana three times a week for the past 3 years. His brain does not look like a normal, healthy brain because of his marijuana use. Notes: The SPECT image makes the areas of the brain that are not getting blood flow and oxygen look like holes. They are not holes but are spaces where there is not healthy blood flow and oxygen. Slide 29 Wrap-up Your brain has 100,000 miles of blood vessels enough to circle Earth approximately four times. Blood carries oxygen to your brain. Brain cells can die if the supply of oxygen is interrupted Slide 30 Wrap-up When THC (the key) locks into the receptors (the locks) in the brain, it can reduce blood flow to important parts of the brain. Without good oxygen the brain s ability to function is lowered.
