1 Lymphoedema Level One Course Content Dear Health Practitioner, The Level One lymphoedema training course offered by the ALERT Education at Macquarie University is open to AHPRA registered health professionals (such as AHPRA registered Medical Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Registered Nurses). The Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) is the peak professional body for Lympohoedema in Australia and New Zealand. ALERT s Level One Lymphoedema course is ALA endorsed and meets the ALA s course guidelines requirements as listed in Appendix 7 of the National Lymphoedema Practitioner Registers (NLPR) Guidelines document. 1 The ALA currently recognises two categories of LT: Category One - Such as AHPRA registered Medical Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Registered Nurses Category Two - Massage therapists Only practitioners who complete one of these courses and meet the rigorous standards to become an ALA Accredited Practitioner are eligible to receive the ALA s tick of approval. Category One LT: These practitioners may provide initial & ongoing assessment of people that have lymphoedema, including complex and undiagnosed lymphoedema, and provide treatment. The type of treatment provided by these practitioners will depend on the scope of practice of their specific undergraduate and post graduate training as well as the practitioner's level of lymphoedema management training. Qualified Medical Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Physiotherapists or Occupational Therapists registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or under the NZ Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act What to look for in a level one course? Page 1 of 13 Created May 2018.
2 Meet the initial and ongoing requirements of an ALA Accredited Practitioner, as set down in the NLPR Guidelines. These practitioners have completed an eligible ALA Endorsed Level 1 lymphoedema course as a minimum standard. Level 1 courses provide the practitioner with the basic skills/knowledge to assess and treat uncomplicated lymphoedemas Once qualified you can practice as a lymphoedema therapist and can receive the ALA logo with tick of approval as an NLPR Accredited Therapist if you register to be an ALA and NLPR member. These courses should be a minimum of 45 face to face contact hours. What is the focus of the course? The focus of the course is primary and/or secondary lymphoedema of the limbs however skills can be translated to all forms of oedema management, such as venous disease (i.e. venous insufficiency and lower limb venous ulcer management), orthopaedics (i.e. post-surgical swelling), neurological (i.e. dependant oedema) and traumatic (i.e. post amputee care of oedema). The Revised Starling s principle highlights why this course is applicable to any health professional that treats clients with oedema. 2 It is the lymphatic system that is responsible for the transportation of tissue oedema and therefore any health professional that manages person s with oedema will benefit from this course. Course inclusions: The course content through online learning and nine practical days includes the following components: Theory of lymphatic anatomy and pathophysiology Prospective and early intervention models of care for lymphoedema Risk minimisation education and reference to best practice documents Full and modified complex lymphoedema therapy (CLT) Comprehensive lectures and practicals on manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) Comprehensive lectures and practicals on compression bandaging (both two layer and four-layer systems). All bandages are included for the practical sessions. Comprehensive lectures and practicals on garment prescription including a full day workshop on custom made garment prescription. Comprehensive lectures and a practical on exercise prescription for lymphoedema Low level laser and other technology such as negative pressure massage therapy intermittent pneumatic compression and kinesiological taping theory. Overview of surgical management of lymphoedema (i.e. liposuction, lymph node transfer, lymphovenous anastomoses) Comprehensive lectures on the diagnostic investigations for lymphoedema (i.e. ICG lymphography) Patients sharing their stories for contextualisation of theory to clinical practice If a lymphoedema course is endorsed by the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) the content will be in line with the ALA s Guidelines for the National Lymphoedema Practitioners Register. Pages from the June 2016 update, are included below, and include what topics are covered in ALA Endorsed courses. What to look for in a level one course? Page 2 of 13 Created May 2018.
