3 Counsellor CanTeen NSW v Full Time, Fixed Term 2 Year Contract v We are currently looking for a Counsellor who will be responsible for the delivery of counselling services. As a counsellor you will be responsible for the delivery of counselling services for all young people affected by cancer, in both individual and group format. In addition, you will provide the counselling services in the specified location and be responsible for the promotion of the service both within CanTeen and with relevant local stakeholders. The position is based in the Sydney office; however, outreach days in different Sydney locations will be required. The counsellor also plays an integral v role within the Sydney Division team and may assist with the design of psychosocial sessions for camps, and attend a small number of these per year. While the role is predominantly face to face, the Division supports young people across Sydney and the counsellor will engage in counselling via a range of mediums including via the Online Support Platform (telephone, chat based and support). We are looking for a highly motivated team player with an ability to move projects forward with independence and autonomy. You will have a minimum of 2 years post-qualifying experience in the clinical setting and/or counselling service using a number of therapeutic approaches such as CBT, IPT, ACT, narrative and solution focused approaches. You will be adaptable to change and have experience in a variety of interventions including individual counselling and group facilitation. You vwill also have the ability to prepare and present information in a clear and logical way, and deliver this information appropriately to target groups. The ideal candidate will have proven experience working with young people and young adults and also experience in grief and loss counselling. Strong planning, time management and experience in the oncology and/or haematology sector is highly desirable. 4 Title: Counsellor Reports to: Division Manager - Sydney & Central Positions reporting into this one: Nil Key working relationships: Psychosocial Team Leaders (PTL s), Psychosocial Support Workers (PSW s), Programs Officers, Division Managers, Online Support Platform Manager, CanTeen Counsellors, Director of Psychosocial Services, CanTeen Members, other service providers. Provision Of Counselling Assess young people in line with CanTeen s Psychosocial Model, including providing intake, assessment, individual support planning and periodic reviews at defined intervals. Design and deliver group counselling activities and workshops. Ensure that referrals are made to suitable resources within the local health and non-healthrelated networks, liaising with family when appropriate. Deliver counselling services to young people affected by cancer via individual and/or group based interventions; this will primarily involve in-person counselling but will also include some online and telephone counselling and occasional work with the Canteen Online Support Service ( , IM and phone counselling). Operate within Canteen s preferred models of service delivery and/or models endorsed by the Director of Psychosocial Support or the Clinical Governance Committee. Intake, assessment and referral Provide an intake and initial assessment service for young people referred to CanTeen. Conduct initial brief assessments and refer young people to other teams within CanTeen and externally. Be responsible for responding to enquiries from families, health and education professionals and others including friends and partners of YPLWC. Service Promotion Be responsible for the promotion of the counselling services in the Division and external to CanTeen. Promote CanTeen s services overall, with an awareness of fundraising needs. Actively liaise with health, school and community sectors and act as an advocate and educator in the needs of young people living with cancer. Online Support Platform Be responsible for the delivery of a multifaceted online and telephone counselling service combined with oversight of the peer-to-peer support environment. Engage with CanTeen members via telephone, chat and , as well as via forums, blogs/ real life stories, webinars and e-learning programs. Identify trends and community need(s) to inform the development of professionally-led discussions, groups, e-learning and psycho-educational programs, as well as some testing and monitoring of the website and associated software.

5 Best Practice: Keep up to date on new areas of best practice, clinical guidelines, and professional requirements. Attend regular professional group supervision provided by CanTeen and other appropriate courses for professional development as agreed with direct line manager Qualifications Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as psychology, social work or counselling. Eligibility for membership to the relevant professional board such as the APS, AASW or PACFA Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) Knowledge/Skills/Experience Minimum 2 years post-qualifying experience in the clinical setting and/or counselling service using a number of therapeutic approaches such as CBT, IPT, ACT, narrative and solution focussed approaches. Experience in a variety of interventions including individual counselling and group facilitation. Proven experience and fluency with using web based technology, including: chat/instant messaging, , telephone systems, websites, SMS, and client management systems. Excellent administration, reporting and computer skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience working with young people and young adults. Experience in grief and loss counselling. Ability to prepare and present information in a clear and logical way, and to deliver this information appropriately to target groups. Strong planning, time management and organisational skills, including ability to take initiative where appropriate. Strong networking skills that include the ability to build strong inter-agency networks Confidence in presenting. Desirable Experience in the oncology and/or haematology sector Experience conducting counselling with families and parents.

6 Whilst the role is predominantly Monday-Friday office hours, due to the nature of CanTeen s work, you may sometimes be required to work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and CanTeen has a generous Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave when hours in excess of the standard working week are worked. As CanTeen s work involves employees being in direct contact with children and young people, employees are required to complete police and working with children checks, relevant to the State in which they will be employed. CanTeen will conduct at least two reference checks on successful applicants, and may also require proof of any professional qualifications stated on an application.
