A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAMME REGARDING HAZARDS OF PLASTIC USE AMONG SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN IN HILTON MATRICULATION HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, CHROMPET, CHENNAI-44 K. PUNITHA 1 & V. HEMAVATHY 2 1 Research Scholar, Department of Child Health Nursing, Sree Balaji College of Nursing, Bharath University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India 2 Principal, Department of Mental Health Nursing, Sree Balaji College of Nursing, Bharath University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India ABSTRACT Plastic pollution, accumulation in the environment of manmade plastic products to the point where they create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well as for human populations. Objectives: To assess knowledge level of school going children regarding hazards of plastic use before the structured teaching programme, to assess knowledge level of school going children regarding hazards of plastic use after the structured teaching programme, to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding hazards of plastic use among the school going children. Methodology: Pre experimental one group pre test post test design was used. Sample size of 30 were selected by simple random technique. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: In pre test, 10(33.3%) had inadequate knowledge, 16(53.3%) had moderately adequate knowledge, and 4(13.3%) had adequate knowledge. In post test majority of them 27(90%) had adequate knowledge, 3(10%) had moderately adequate knowledge, none of them had inadequate knowledge. KEYWORDS: Assess Effectiveness Structured Teaching Programme School Going Children INTRODUCTION Plastic pollution has the potential to poison animals, which can then adversely affect human food supplies. Plastic pollution involves the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, habitat, or humans. Many types and forms of plastic pollution exist. Plastic pollution can adversely affect lands, waterways and oceans. Plastic reduction efforts have occurred in some areas in attempts to reduce plastic consumption and promote plastic recycling. The prominence of plastic pollution is correlated with plastics being inexpensive and durable, which lends to high levels of plastics used by humans.
2 44 K. Punitha & V. Hemavathy METHODOLOGY Evaluate research approach and a pre experimental (one group pre test post test) design was used. Simple random technique by lottery method was used to select the sample for the study. The study was conducted among school going children in Hilton Matriculation Higher Secondary school, Crumpet, Chennai-44. The population for the study includes the school going children studying in Hilton Matriculation Higher Secondary school. The sample used for the study was 30 (Thirty) school going children. In this study school going children were selected by simple random technique by lottery method. Data Collection Procedure Written permission was obtained from the Hilton Matriculation Higher Secondary school for conducting the research study. The investigator had established good relationship with the school going children who had participated in the study at Hilton Matriculation Higher Secondary school. The information pertaining to demographic data was collected. A structured teaching programme was used to obtain knowledge regarding hazards of plastic use. The structured teaching programme on hazards of plastic use was administered soon after the pre test to the 30 school going children. All 30 school going children took an active participation in the teaching programme. The post test was done after the administration of the structured teaching programme to the school going children. Plan for Data Analysis RESULTS The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Table 1: The Pre Test Level of School Going Pre Test No % Inadequate(50and below) Moderately adequate (51-75%) Adequate (76-100%) Table 1 reveals the pre test knowledge level of school going children regarding hazards of plastic use. 10(33.3%) had inadequate knowledge and majority of them 16(53.3%) had moderately adequate knowledge, and 4(13.3%) had adequate knowledge. Before structured teaching programme the Standard deviation value is 1.5 and 0.36 after the structured teaching programme. The mean difference and Standard deviation for effectiveness is 5.2 and 3 respectively. To test the significance, t test has been applied. The overall paired test value is It is hypothesized that there is significant(p< 0.001) in effectiveness of structured teaching programme among the school going children. CONCLUSIONS The present study was associated with the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding hazards of plastic use among School going children in Hilton matriculation higher secondary school, at crumpet, Chennai. The investigator analysed the data, there was significant (p< 0.001) improvement in post test knowledge score. The knowledge improvement mean score was 17.5 with the t value 10.4 which shows the effectiveness of structured teaching programme. So educating the School going children regarding hazards of plastic use will help to maintain normal well being and prevent the hazards. RECOMMENDATIONS School health personnel must prepare a self instructional material such as self reading package and video films on hazards of plastic use. Parents should be persuaded to provide anticipatory guidance to their children about hazards of plastic use. There should be in-service education programme for teachers about hazards of plastic use. School health nurse to be posted to all school in India especially in the state of Tamil Nadu.
