1 Status as of: Form BEEF DESCRIPTION OF BEEF NATIONAL GENETIC EVALUATION SYSTEM Country (or countries): Denmark Trait name: Calving Ease DATA COLLECTION Breed(s) Limousine and Charolais Trait definition Calving difficulties measured on a scale from 1-4 Method and frequency of measurement Who does the performance recording? Method of collecting data Which animals get recorded? Is birthday recorded? Is day of recording available? Are the data adjusted and/or selected? If yes please describe the methodology applied Time period for inclusion of records Criteria (data edits) for inclusion of records Is embryo transfer applied? How are ET animals been identified? 1 Is recipient mother ID recorded? How do you treat incomplete data? Calving ease is scored 1 to 4, 1 being an easy calving and 4 a very difficult calving that involves veterinarian assistance. Approx. 70% of the born pure breed calves have registration of calving ease Farmer Data are registered by farmer on PDA or paper. Registrations are stored at Central Cattle database owned by Danish Cattle Federation Both pure breed and crosses between dairy cow and beef bull Yes Yes No 1975 Records from ET are deleted Yes, but the technique is rarely used. ET animals are recognized by a sex code of 3 (males) or 4 (females). Sex codes for non ET animals are 1 (males) and 2 (females) Recipient mother ID is recorded Incomplete data are deleted

2 Model used for genetic evaluation 2a Environmental effects 2b Use of genetic groups and relationships Genetic parameters in the model 3 Adjustment for heterogeneous variance in evaluation model System validation Definition of genetic reference base Next base change Assessment of index quality (computation of reliability, connection) Expression of genetic evaluations MODEL MT-BLUP-AM with maternal and direct effects. In the model is: - still birth for purebred (STP) - still birth for crossbred (STC) - calving ease for purebred (CEP) - calving ease for crossbred (CEC) - birth weight for purebred (BWP) - birth size for crossbred (BWC) Herd x year (STP+CEP+BWP, many, F) + Herd x year (STC+CEC+BWC, many, R) + Season of calving (STP+CEP+BWP + STC+CEC+BWC, 7, F) + sex of calf ( STP+CEP+BWP + STC+CEC+BWC, 3, F) + Age of cow ( STP+CEP+BWP + STC+CEC+BWC, 19, F) + Single/multiple birth (STP+CEP+BWP + STC+CEC+BWC, 7, F) + Breed of dam ( STC+CEC+BWC, 3, F) + PE DAM ( STP+CEP+BWP, many, R) + Cow ( STP+CEP+BWP, R) + Animal (R) Use of genetic groups (country group x birth year group) No Correlation between EBV in subsequent evaluations and changes for individual animals in subsequent evaluations in relation to expected changes Rolling base. All animals born 3-7 years before publication year. In 2008 the base is animals born from 1 st of January 2001 to 1 st of January Next base change will be in 1 st of January No check on connection is done Reliability is calculated by a approximate selection index methodology (counting number of records on individual, progeny, sire, dam and their progeny PUBLICATION Estimated combined breeding values for calving, direct (FØDSEL) and calving, maternal (KÆLVNING) is calculated from maternal and direct EBV s for CEP and STP on the basis of economic values. EBV's for FØDSEL and KÆLVNING are standardized in comparison with the reference base: Average of 100 within genetic reference base. SD of 10 within subgroup of genetic reference base. The subgroup is

3 animals with high reliability on EBV. The EBV's for FØDSEL and KÆLVNING are included in the total merit index (S-indeks). Criteria per official publication of evaluations Number of evaluations / publications per year Anticipated changes in the near future Key reference on methodology applied Key organization: Contact person, address, phone, fax, , website Reliability on index for FØDSEL/KÆLVNING or S-indeks above 10% 4 evaluation per year None Dansk Kvæg Udkærsvej Aarhus N Anders Fogh Tel Mail adf@landscentret.dk 1) Use Appendix II BEEF for sample ID of ET animals 2a) Use abbreviation listed in the attached list of abbreviation to define the type of model. 2b) Use abbreviation for most common effects as listed in the attached list of abbreviation indicating, also, if the effect is treated as random (R) or fixed (F). 3) Use Appendix I BEEF for heritability/genetic variance estimates.
