About Us

Why Sensory Storytime? ASD Facts and Statistics About 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (CDC 2016) ASD is reported to occur in all racial ethnic and socioeconomic groups (CDC 2016) Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability (Autism Society 2016)

Why Sensory Storytime at TCPL? Saw a gap in our programming Inspired by posts on Sensory Storytime from ALSC Blog Focus on music & movement naturally appealing! Emerging literature made sensoryfriendly programming much less daunting

What s Different about Sensory Storytime? Predictability: Visual schedule & outline in advance Flexibility: Warm & welcoming attitude is key! Interactivity: More songs & movement, fewer books.

What s Different about Sensory Storytime? Attendance limited 10 children, 2 staff Remove excess visual stimuli Quiet Corner provided Be inclusive! Many sensory-friendly elements can be introduced to regular programming

Marketing: Sample Media Release Children ages 3 through 7 are invited to move, sing and play at Tompkins County Public Library s Sensory Storytime, This program is free and open to children of all abilities; however, it is especially designed for children with sensory integration challenges. Children who have previously struggled to sit through other storytimes may find Sensory Storytime a better fit.
