1 Friends of the th Avenue West Mountlake Terrace, Washington May 2016 Newsletter From your Friends President Hello Friends, It is Spring again and another mild winter is at a close. Glad to see signs of life renewing itself all over. The library remains a vital part of of the community and so does our mission to provide library programs to the many patrons young and not so young. The Friends of the MLT Library is staying the course of raising money through our ongoing book sale tended faithfully by our dynamic duo Clyde and Lois Ambacher. We also had a very successful Fiction Frenzy to blow out adult and juvenile fiction that we were swimming in. More funds raised to pay for library programs. We are happy to be blessed with a strong Board of the Friends who feel so passionate about building literacy. We owe a good deal of thanks to Dr. Pat Chandler who has been our Membership Chair for many years. Dr. Chandler will remain on our board but has retired as our Membership Chair Books can be dangerous. The best ones should be labeled: This could change your life. Helen Exley We are always looking for ways to grow our membership and build our team; we are having our Annual Meeting Saturday, May 21st at 10:15. We will present our slate of officers. I will continue as President, Linda Canney will continue as Treasurer, Marilyn Simon will continue as Secretary. We have an open position for Membership Chair. We also have set the date for our final meeting before we break for Summer. Saturday, June 25th at 10:15 will be our last until September.

2 We are hoping for all those who are Spring cleaning would consider donating their gently used books for our ongoing book sale. Consider referring us to all those who mention they need a place to bring their book treasures. It aids us with our mission to build literacy through funding library programs. We are very proud of this vital community resource that is the library and all the provisions available to patrons. I am always glad to hear thoughts and ideas for our group to remain sustainable in our support of the library. Best Always, Your Friend, Valentina

3 Note from the Librarian Spring has sprung and the is bustling with ac:vity. By the :me you receive this newsle?er, we will have offered our highly popular Poetry & Music in the Library program, featuring local musician Cara Hill playing with Sea?le Youth Poet Laureate Leija Farr. We con:nue to offer twice-monthly Saturday Science programs aimed at Elementary School-aged children on topics such as light, robots, engineering and more. Addi:onally, we were able to once again offer the Tween STEAM club last fall, presented by the Pacific Science Center. This six-session program resonated with tweens and their parents. As the program concluded one mother thanked the library profusely saying, We are experiencing financial hardship and programs like this allow an opportunity for our son and other like children to engage with peers whereas otherwise their parents could not afford to pay tui:on for said opportuni:es. He really enjoyed the series! We re pleased that due to this and other efforts, our children s and teen staff - Susan, Sasha and Angela - were recently recommended as STEM Stars for the Snohomish County Economic Alliance STEM Network. STEM Stars are described as anyone who is doing anything great in the STEM field. Early Literacy is another high priority with weekly baby, toddler and preschool story:mes. Another way we support early literacy is by suppor:ng childcare providers in by providing con:nuing educa:on (STARS) credits through literacy-related classes such as the upcoming Get Excited About Reading class on May 11 th. The was pleased to par:cipate in the Prime Time program, a six week long program of There s no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and there are kids who are reading the wrong books. James Patterson

4 reading discussion and storytelling in partnership with Humani:es Washington and Mountlake Terrace Elementary. Goals included bonding parents and children around the act of reading, encouraging families to read and discuss humani:es topics and encouraging parents and children to become ac:ve users of library resources. Small business & entrepreneur support is one of our strategic focuses. In order to engage entrepreneurs, Sno- Isle is offering a series of Your Business Smart Start classes in partnership with the SBA (Small Business Administra:on). Topics have included planning, financing and more. The series will con:nue through the summer. While summer s:ll feels far away, we are gearing up again for Explore Summer, which encourages youth to read, learn and discover more about the world around them. Throughout the summer weeks, families can enjoy highquality programs that are both fun and educa:onal. My door is (almost) always open.
