2 DISCLAIMER IMPORTANT NOTE: By this time of year, we normally receive San Diego County population estimates from either the American Community Survey or SANDAG. Because we do not yet have these population estimates, 2016 population estimates were repeated for Therefore, most rates calculated for 2017 in this presentation, using 2016 population estimates, are probably TOO HIGH. Most 2017 population group estimates will be higher than the equivalent 2016 estimate, therefore leading to a lower rate.

33 2017 IN SUMMARY After a distinct period of increased suicide in San Diego County ( ), the annual suicide rate has remained steady from 2013 to In 2017, there were 7 times as many suicides in the County as there were homicides. There were about three and a half times as many male suicides as there were female suicides. Suicide rates generally increase with age. We have seen a short-term, substantial increase in black male suicides. 160% increase from 2014 to 2017

34 2017 IN SUMMARY 57% of all suicides are white males. Divorced and widowed males had higher rates of suicide. The San Diego County suicide rate is about the same as the national rate but is higher than the California state rate. The East Region has the highest suicide rate and the South Region has the lowest.

35 WHERE DID THE ONE-YEAR INCREASE IN SUICIDES OCCUR? The one year ( ) increase in suicide appears to have occurred in the following populations Males Whites (men) and Blacks (men) Divorced (men) and Single (men) Those working in professional and office/clerical settings Those aged 65 to 84 years Especially the 70 to 79 age group, in which the rate more than doubled Those using firearms Those living in the South, East, and North Inland regions of San Diego County
