Ammonia and Bleach By Breyon Brown March 19, 2015
FADE IN: The scene opens on a dimly lit bedroom. There are clothes strewn over one side of the bedroom, while the other is impeccably neat. WEEKES, mid-twenties, curly-haired, wearing a bra and underwear, wearing a Star of David necklace, is in bed next to O FALLAHAN, mid twenties shirtless and wearing underwear. They are not facing each other. Hanna rolls over towards Seamus. It s Thursday. I know. Seamus kisses Hanna on the cheek and she doesn t respond to him. Seamus gets up. INT. APARTMENT KITCHEN - DAY Hanna is in the kitchen, pouring COFFEE into a mug. She is wearing a men s dress shirt and no pants. Seamus is next to her, wearing flannel pajama pants, and cooking eggs on the stove. (mutters) You shouldn t cook while naked, you know. (gesturing to pants) I m not naked. Hanna rolls her eyes, and walks away, back towards the bedroom with her coffee. Besides, it s bacon that I shouldn t cook naked!
2. (O.C.) I wouldn t know! Hanna goes into the bedroom when her cell phone RINGS. She puts the coffee down, and looks at her phone. It is her MOTHER. She presses IGNORE. Hanna suddenly hears Seamus s cell phone RINGING in the kitchen. She rushes into the kitchen. Seamus has answered the phone. (on cell phone) Hi, Rivka. He pauses, and turns to Hanna. He flinches. (to Hanna) It s your mother. (inaudible, mouths) Tell her I m not here. (on cell phone) Sorry, Mrs. Weekes, Hanna s not here-- (mouths to Hanna) Sorry. He hands Hanna the phone. She rolls her eyes and pulls out her own cell phone, irritated. (on cell phone) She ll call you on her phone. Seamus quickly hangs up. (on cell phone) Shalom, Ima.
3. Hanna walks back into the bedroom, and Seamus watches from the kitchen. He sighs, and takes a sip of his own coffee which is on the kitchen table. He hears Hanna YELLING in YIDDISH. (In Yiddish) Nit keyn! Ikh ton nit viln tsu trefn im!ir visn ver ikh bin in libe mit // translation : No! I don t want to meet him! You know who I m in love with!// Seamus sighs. He pulls out his own cell phone, and texts. : They re at it again. : Do you want to talk about it? : Not really : I m coming over. : I d rather you not. : It is Thursday. I ll be there in 20 minutes. Hanna is still yelling at her mother in Yiddish. Seamus enters. He pauses. (cell phone) Ir visn ver ikh bin in libe mit! Ima! I m going out for a bit. I ll see you later. I love you.
4. Hanna doesn t respond, or turn around. She sighs when Seamus leaves the room. INT. S CAR - DAY Seamus is sitting with his head against the window of a car., 30, wearing glasses, a sweater, and scarf, is driving. Possibly rain streaking down window. INT. APARTMENT - DAY (FLASHBACK) FLASHBACK TO: Hanna is blowing out a CANDLE on a BIRTHDAY CAKE. Seamus claps, and they embrace happily. EXT. CITY - NIGHT (FLASHBACK) Hanna and Seamus are walking through a city at night, holding hands. Hanna is wearing a fitted wool trench coat and jeans, and Seamus is wearing an argyle sweater, scarf, and pants. They are happy. INT. APARTMENT BEDROOM - NIGHT They are lying in Seamus s bed, naked with messy hair. Seamus kisses Hanna on the cheek, then suddenly gets on top of her, kissing her. Seamus! (V.O.) INT. S CAR - DAY (PRESENT) Neil is shaking Seamus with one hand, while the other hand is on the steering wheel. What is on your mind, man? You haven t said a word since I got here.
5. (distractedly) I don t think she loves me anymore. That s life, man. I don t think Rivka wants her to love me. (laughing) Well look at ya. I don t blame her. Seamus pushes Neil lightly. I get it. Hanna s beautiful. She s Israeli, and she s Jewish. You re Irish and Catholic. Rivka must be thinking that you re the poster child of "not what my child should be dating. I love her. Hanna is quickly getting dressed. She looks at a picture of her and Seamus and shakes her head in disgust. INT. S CAR - DAY I know that, but what for? INT. APARTMENT - DAY (FLASHBACK) FLASHBACK TO: Seamus and Hanna are sitting on the couch looking at vacation pamphlets. Seamus is holding one for a beach and Hanna is holding one for a ski resort. (V.O.) You like summer, she likes winter. FLASHBACK TO:
6. EXT.STREET - DAY (FLASHBACK) Seamus is sitting on steps outside the apartment building stroking a cat. Hanna runs by with a dog and waves to him. (V.O.) You like cats and she likes dogs. Tomato, tomahto. (FLASHBACK) FLASHBACK TO: Seamus and Hanna are standing in their bedroom, facing each other. Seamus is wearing stripes, Hanna is wearing solids. (V.O.) You don t add up. INT. S CAR - DAY (PRESENT) Besides, what would Mum think? She wouldn t let Hanna get by the front door. Hanna s eyes. Her brows are creased. Hanna is searching through stuff under the bed. (V.O.) I love her eyes. She has beautiful, brown eyes, with dark eyelashes. I love the way her brows crease when she really gets into something she loves doing, like a crossword puzzle. Hanna sighs, as she can t find what she is looking for. She looks nervous, and grabs a leather JACKET as she runs towards the door. She puts the jacket on as she s running. (V.O.) I love the way she ll put on a jacket while she s running. She does it all the time-- I don t think I ve ever seen her put on a jacket while standing still.
7. INT. APARTMENT KITCHEN - DAY As Hanna runs towards the door, she accidentally knocks over Seamus s coffee mug. The mug shatters and coffee spills everywhere. (V.O.) I love her coffee. She makes it every morning for me, even when we re fighting. She knows that French Vanilla is my favorite kind. Hanna starts to clean up the coffee spill when suddenly there is a knock on the door. Hanna goes to the door and opens it. It is her mother, RIVKA WEEKES, 55, gray-haired and wearing a black shawl and trousers. A handsome young man, DUSTIN THEOLONIKIS, 28, stands next to her. He is wearing a collared button up shirt and chino pants. Hanna stares at Rivka and Rivka stare sat her back. The young man shakes her hand. RIVKA Hanna, this is Dustin Theolonikis. (unsure) It s nice to meet you. She and Dustin hug, and Dustin kisses her on the cheek. It is obvious that Hanna is not happy. RIVKA (Cheerfully) Lets go to lunch! They start to leave, when Hanna suddenly remembers something and rushes back towards her bedroom. INT. S CAR - DAY I love the little Star of David necklace I got her. She wears it everywhere. It s like a reminder of who she is, and who I am to her.
8. Yeah, a reminder that you re crossing into dangerous territory. I m better off there than here. Turn the car around, I have to tell Hanna. Rivka and Dustin are watching in the background. Hanna slowly takes off the Star of David necklace and places it on Seamus s pillow. She walks quickly back towards the door. INT. S CAR - DAY I have to tell Hanna that I love her. The bedroom is dark. No one is in the apartment except for Seamus. He is kneeling in front of Hanna s bed, holding the necklace. His eyes are red and it is obvious that he has been crying for a long time. CUT TO BLACK
