1 OUR VOICE * SOLVING PROBLEMS * CHANGING LIVES A newsletter for individuals receiving services Winter 2015 Editor s Letter Well how are you all doing? Winter is finally here and the holidays are over. Maybe you are suffering from the blues from the let down of the Holidays or Season Affective Disorder (SAD) has set in. Some just find winter is the hardest season to get through. With the cold, wind, and the snow that piles up, it is hard to get out and take care of business. What can be done to help? First, let your psychiatrist and case manager know how you are feeling. Second, go outside as much as you possibly can on sunny days. This well help you fight off the SAD that is from lack of sun light. Third, do as much as you safely can in the weather. If you stay home and don t go out, you will be isolated and this may contribute to depression. Go to the library, or one of the drop in centers in Muskegon. You might take the MATS bus to the mall just to walk it s a great way to get exercise! Remember, you re not alone. There are a lot of others out there that feel just like you and are fighting the same battle. It won t be long and the snow will be gone and the sun will be shining things will be green and the smell of flowers will be in the air. Just hang in there! He was a good person and a great case manager to those of us that were lucky to have personal contact with this gentle person. He was taken from us so unexpectedly. He always came out to the lobby with a smile that could light up a room. He held his hand out to grab hold of yours as if to let you know you re not alone. He was very good at being up to par on what was going on with each and every person s case on his case load (and that is not always easy to do!) If he slipped up a time or two he was quick to fix it. It is hard to find someone with anything bad to say about this great person. So we can know that he is in a better place. Jerry s caring spirit and smile will be missed but never forgotten, just like the good he has done in the lives of those he has touched. May we remember the things learned from the time we spent with Jerry Zadel and use them to move forward. Don t ever forget Jerry Zadel.

3 Page 3 Recipe: Butter Cookies Prep time 10 mins Total time 1hr 45 min Servings 18 Oven temp 325 Ingredients 1 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature) 2/3 cup white sugar 1 egg 1tsp lemon zest 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour In bowl cream together butter, sugar, egg, lemon, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour, mixing until totally mixed in and smooth. Spray pan with Pam or cover with Parchment paper, then roll the dough into 1 balls and place them 2 to 3 inches apart. Bake until bottom turns brown. 8 to 15 mins. Let cool before moving. ADHD: The Signs Living with ADHD presents many challenges, everyday. ADHD can cause impairment at home, school,/work, and in relationships. While no two people have exactly the same experience with ADHD, there are many common symptoms: Failure to pay attention to details or making careless mistakes Difficulty listening when spoken to directly Inability to finish task or follow simple instructions Trouble organizing activities Avoidance of things that require long periods of mental effort Do you lose things you need? Are you easily distracted? Do you forget things in daily activities? These are some of the things that are signs of ADHD but can also be signs of something more serious and should be checked out by a Doctor. Jill Lacy How to Stay Warm Winter is here! So how can we all dress to stay warm? We may need to layer up, wearing many of layers of clothes. But where do we get the clothes to put on, you may ask? Well there are clothes closets like one at Club Interactions, Salvation Army, some Churches. There are second hand stores like Goodwill, Use it Again, Hope s Outlet, Another Time Around, Rescue Mission Store, and Value Land, where on the last Tuesday of the month everything is ½ off the marked price. I have filled my closet from these places without breaking the bank. You can find shoes, boots, socks, pants, tops., suits, dresses, sweaters, coats, and anything else you may need to dress to be warm as you travel out this winter to see the Doctor, get a job, or play in the snow with the kids. May you enjoy the winter weather and stay healthy, one and all.
