Have a 30-pack year smoking history For instance, if you have smoked one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years. Currently smoke or have quit smoking within the last 15 years. If you meet this criteria talk to your doctor about a referral for lung cancer screening or contact our Lung Nurse Navigator at. Low Dose CT Scan Lung cancer screening is done using an imaging machine to produce a low-dose spiral (or helical) CT (Computed Tomography) scan of the chest. This scan uses a series of x-rays to show the shape, size and location of anything abnormal in the chest that might signal the need for follow up.
