2 Situation 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Outbreak in West Africa: As of October 3, 2014: 7492 suspected (4108 confirmed cases) and 3439 Deaths. Countries affected: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Concerns exist regarding a global pandemic. The CDC stresses that Ebola does not pose a significant risk to the U.S. Public. Despite the low domestic threat level, fears could escalate into supply shortages. 2
3 Background There has been one domestic reported case to date. There is no known, proven treatment and no vaccine is currently available. Patient mortality rate is 60%. During outbreaks, the disease can spread quickly within healthcare settings due to hazards of exposure to infected blood or body fluids. Exposure can occur where hospital staff are not wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as eye protection, masks, gowns, and gloves. Proper cleaning and disposal of contaminated supplies such as needles and syringes is critical. SARS and Influenza pandemic threats in recent years have resulted in shortages of N95 masks. IN ORDER TO MITIGATE RISK OF SHORTAGES MedAssets maintains multi-source contracts with suppliers of PPE products. See list of categories, suppliers and contract numbers in appendix. 3

5 Recommendations Employ heightened alertness in Emergency Department as the front door of the hospital. Use Universal Precautions as well as a quarantine and isolation protocols for patients suspected of exposure to EVD. Follow all CDC Guidelines including, but not limited to, wearing appropriate PPE including eye protection, masks, gowns and gloves. Employ isolation protocols similar to those used in cases of HIV and Hepatitis Work with your Distributor to obtain continuity plan in case of a pandemic.
