We invited several subject matter experts to write on topics related to contractors and those in the construction industry. The Ventura County Contractors Association is a non-profit membership association of general contractors, subcontractors, building material suppliers and many other leading construction industry businesses. 3 I ve worked with Jim McAfee for the past 15 years originally at C&R Reprographics where he was the manager of our Ventura location, which was the largest of the three. He worked with many contractors from the VCCA establishing relationships that would continue to grow through the years. Jim established himself as a reliable and dedicated co-worker/friend who always put the customer s needs first. He helped build the digital online plan room and grow the business by never compromising quality or service. In March 2008 he joined Calvin Ehler at Coast Reprographics and opened a shop in the Oxnard/Ventura area. He continued this dedication to customer service and quality. Understanding the importance of the relationships he had Coast Reprographics become a member of the VCCA. He continued to grow the company by bringing on new technology and better plan rooms to meet the needs of the contractors. Over the years we have helped the VCCA with many of their golf tournaments and projects for Maria. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the VCCA. Maybe You It s estimated that about 10 million baby boomers plan to sell or close their businesses during the next decade. 1 And even though 78% of small-business owners are counting on the proceeds of a sale to meet 60% to 100% of their retirement needs, only 30% of owners have a formal succession plan. 2 That s a pretty big wave of prospective retirees, many of whom have not put much thought into how they might step away from their businesses. Succession plans are designed to ensure the orderly transfer of a business from the current owners to the next generation and to provide a way for the owners (or their heirs) to cash out. Monetizing a closely held business is often a long and difficult process, so you may benefit from developing a written exit strategy as soon as possible. Set a target. It might be wise to have a realistic retirement date in mind. Any effort to identify and groom a successor might take longer than you expect. And if you plan to sell your company, it could take five to 10 years to find a qualified buyer, begin the ownership transition, and finalize the transaction. To get the best possible price and terms, you may need to focus on improving the company s balance sheet before you start seeking a buyer. 11 P a g e

13 Stage your exit. Keeping your business in the family may be an easy decision if an adult child or another relative is willing and able to take over. Otherwise, it may be possible to sell your business to co-owners, outsiders, or even your own employees. In some cases, closing and liquidating the assets may be the only viable option. Either way, you may want to prepare for your retirement by removing certain personal assets from the books. Invest outside of your company. What would happen if you needed to leave the business sooner than expected and/or the sales price was less than you had hoped? Making annual retirement plan contributions could help insulate your personal financial picture from risks associated with your business s distinct market. Building a separate investment portfolio might also provide greater flexibility during and after a period of ownership transition. Some people may avoid the issue of succession because they love running their businesses and don t want to stop any time soon. 23 Health Matters with Laurel Beth Rice, RN LAUREL RICE R.N. ZIKA VIRUS Not all mosquito bites are the same. Different mosquitoes carry different viruses. Prior to 2015, the Zika virus had been detected only in areas of Africa and the Pacific Islands. In May of 2016, the Pan American Health Organization issued an alert confirming infections in Brazil. Currently, outbreaks have been reported in many countries and territories. The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness spread by the Aedes species of mosquito, causing an infection and illness that resembles influenza. Under most circumstances, the symptoms pass within a week. However, there have been recent concerns about the virus and a possible link between the Zika virus and some birth defects. Because of this, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus outbreak a public health crisis. Some Facts about Zika: I will list some but not all. The Zika virus typically occurs in tropical climates--with travel between the US and such climates being our primary concern. A link between Zika infected pregnant women and infant microcephaly, an abnormal smallness of the head. 22 P a g e

24 As noted above, the Zika infection can spread from expectant mother to unborn baby There is no treatment at this time. Hospitalization for the virus is uncommon. Some US states have indigenous mosquitoes that can become infected with the Zika virus, and spread the illness. Mosquitoes in turn can become infected by biting a person infected with the virus. The mosquito that carries the Zika virus can be found almost anywhere in the world. People who have not traveled have been identified with the virus. The virus has been found in saliva, urine and semen, where it can live up to 2 weeks or more. It is a distinct possibility Zika can be sexually transmitted, thus the use of condoms or abstinence is encouraged. As noted above, symptoms of the Zika virus strongly resemble the common flu. A blood test will confirm its presence. The mosquitoes that carry the virus are identified as Aedes aegypti. This breed is known as a container-breeding mosquito. It lays its eggs in and around standing water or in manmade containers--trashcans, etc. These mosquitoes lay eggs on the walls of water-filled containers, sticking like glue and remain attached until scrubbed off. The eggs can survive without water for up to 8 months. When water covers the eggs, they hatch and become adults within a week. Guidance for protecting workers can be found in OSHA QuickCard publication 3880,(2016) and publication Recommended actions by employers, a perfect reason for a tailgate meeting *Inform workers about the ZIKA virus and protection. *Use Insect repellents as directed. *Wear proper clothing that covers exposed skin. Loose-fitting clothing if such outerwear is safe around different types of equipment. Watch for signs of heat illness. *Treat boots, socks, pants, shirts with an insecticide or CDC and EPA recommended repellent medication/chemical such as Permethrin. *If using sunscreen, use first then apply insect repellent on top of the sunscreen. *Eliminate sources of standing water such as tires, buckets, cans, bottles, barrels, ground under dripping faucets. These are found on all construction sites, and are potential breeding grounds for the laying of Zika virus bearing eggs. For more information consult Thank you for allowing me to be of service.
